Disinfection of swimming pools and hot tubs (pools/spas) are necessary to prevent outbreaks and exposure to waterborne pathogens from water recreation. However, harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from heavy chlorine usage continue to be a growing concern. Chlorine-based disinfectants also react with human inputs like sweat, urine, cosmetics, sunscreen, etc.

The issue of obstacle avoidance and safety for visually impaired individuals has been a major topic of research. However, complex street environments still pose significant challenges for blind obstacle detection systems. Existing solutions often fail to provide real-time, accurate obstacle avoidance decisions.

African Swine Fever (ASF) is an acute, highly contagious, and lethal disease caused by the African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV), posing a severe threat to the global pig farming industry. Although live vaccines are currently available, preventing and controlling ASF remains a considerable challenge. Several factors have impeded vaccine development, including the complexity of ASFV particles and the suppressive effects of its gene-encoded proteins on the host's immune system.

Article Synopsis
  • - Liver fibrosis is a crucial step in the worsening of chronic liver disease, and accurately diagnosing and staging it remains challenging.
  • - Researchers developed fluorescent probes using a nucleic acid aptamer (ZY-1) that specifically targets cellular fibronectin (cFN), an ECM molecule that increases during liver fibrosis.
  • - The study showed that these ZY-1-based probes can effectively distinguish between early and advanced stages of liver fibrosis in mouse models, suggesting potential for early diagnosis in clinical settings.

Heterostructure engineering provides versatile platforms for exploring exotic physics and enhancing the device performance through interface coupling. Despite the rich array of physical phenomena presented by heterostructures composed of semiconductor and metal van der Waals materials, significant gaps remain in understanding their optical, thermal, and electronic properties. Here, we demonstrate that the valley pseudospin and electron-phonon coupling in monolayer WSe are significantly influenced by interface coupling with 1T-VSe.

The impact of acupuncture on knee function and pain intensity following knee replacement remains controversial. Therefore, we categorized the postsurgery recovery period into 3 phases: short-term (≤2 weeks), intermediate-term (2 weeks-3 months), and long-term (>3 months), and then assessed the effectiveness of acupuncture in improving function and alleviating pain at different stages following knee replacement. This meta-analysis included randomized controlled trials that compared acupuncture intervention with either no treatment or a sham group after knee replacement.

Magnetic 2D materials offer a promising platform for manipulating quantum states at the nanoscale. Recent studies have underscored the significant influence of 2D magnetic materials on the optical behaviors of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), revealing phenomena such as interlayer exciton-magnon interactions, magnetization-dependent valley polarization, and an enhanced Zeeman effect. However, the controlled manipulation of anisotropic optical properties in TMDs via magnetism remains challenging.

Efficient drinking water disinfection methods are critical for public health. Locally enhanced electric field treatment (LEEFT) is an antimicrobial method that uses sharp structures, like metallic nanowires, to enhance the electric field at tips and cause bacteria inactivation. Electroporation is the originally designed mechanism of LEEFT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how light interacts with moiré superlattices, which could improve technologies in photonics, optoelectronics, and valleytronics.
  • Researchers developed twisted WSe/WSe/SiP structures to show that these superlattices can exhibit a high degree of optical anisotropy, with a polarization degree of about 70% due to uneven charge distribution.
  • They also revealed that applying a magnetic field can modify the polarization state, resulting in changes to the polarization angle and degree, highlighting a new way to manipulate optical properties in moiré superlattices through engineering.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an indispensable role in the occurrence and development of ovarian cancer (OC). However, the potential involvement of lncRNAs in the progression of OC is largely unknown. To investigate the detailed roles and mechanisms ofRAD51 homolog B-antisense 1 (), a novel lncRNA in OC, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was performed to verify the expression of .

  • IV-V two-dimensional materials are key for polarization-sensitive and angle-resolved devices due to their unique directional properties.
  • Researchers used a diamond anvil cell and various measurements to explore the effects of pressure on phonon behavior in SiP flakes, discovering an unusual phonon hardening within a broader softening region.
  • The study showed that applying pressure significantly enhances the degree of polarization in SiP flakes, providing insights into high-pressure phonon changes and methods to optimize the performance of anisotropic 2D materials.

The instability of viral targets including SARS-CoV-2 in sewage is an important challenge in wastewater monitoring projects. The unrecognized interruptions in the 'cold-chain' transport from the sample collection to RNA quantification in the laboratory may undermine the accurate quantification of the virus. In this study, bovine serum albumin (BSA)-modified porous superabsorbent polymer (PSAP) beads were applied to absorb raw sewage samples as a simple method for viral RNA preservation.
