Article Synopsis
  • Sarcopenia is a muscle disorder in which there is a significant loss of muscle mass and function, with few effective drug treatments available.
  • The study discovered a strong link between low selenium levels in the blood and muscle function in elderly individuals suffering from sarcopenia, leading researchers to suggest that selenium supplementation could help manage this condition.
  • Researchers developed nanoparticles that release selenium and leucine, which improved muscle function by regulating certain cell signaling pathways and showed promise as a safe and effective treatment for sarcopenia.

Ecological balance and stable economic development are crucial for the fishery. This study proposes a predator-prey system for marine communities, where the growth of predators follows the Allee effect and takes into account the rapid fluctuations in resource prices caused by supply and demand. The system predicts the existence of catastrophic equilibrium, which may lead to the extinction of prey, consequently leading to the extinction of predators, but fishing efforts remain high.

Objectives: To examine the relationships between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and developing sarcopenia in older adults and the modifying effects of active social participation.

Methods: This prospective cohort study used survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including baseline surveys from 2011, follow-up data from 2013, follow-up data from 2015, and information on ACEs from the 2014 Life History Survey. Information concerning 10 ACEs, including five threat-related ACEs and five deprivation-related ACEs before 17 years of age was obtained by questionnaires through face-to-face interviews.

Coastal waters undergo dynamic changes in seawater carbonate chemistry due to natural and anthropogenic factors. Despite this, our current understanding of how coastal phytoplankton respond to fluctuating pH is limited. In the present study, we investigated the physiological responses of two coastal diatoms Thalassiosira pseudonana and Thalassiosira weissflogii to seawater acidification and diurnally fluctuating pH under natural solar irradiance.

Unlabelled: Plant foods are rich in many important micronutrients that are beneficial for bone health. This cross-sectional study of 9613 community-dwelling older adults found that more consumption of healthy plant foods and less consumption of animal foods and unhealthy plant foods were associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis.

Introduction: Osteoporosis,a common chronic disease in older adults, threatens their health.
