Surface antigen-directed immunotherapy is a curative treatment modality for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that is characterized by the abundance and stability expression of surface antigens. However, current surface antigen-directed immunotherapies have shown poor outcomes and undesirable mortality rates in treating AML patients, primarily due to acquired resistance that arises from using single-target therapies to address the heterogeneous expression of surface antigens. Hence, in order to improve the efficacy of antigen-specific therapies for treating AML, we designed a bispecific aptamer-drug conjugate.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the relationship between total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and advanced oxidized protein products (AOPP) levels in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) undergoing radiotherapy, focusing on the development of oral mucositis (OM).
  • Researchers measured these biomarkers at various points during treatment and categorized patients into severe and non-severe OM groups to observe changes over time.
  • Findings indicate that while T-AOC and GSH-PX levels temporarily increased during treatment, they decreased significantly in severe OM patients, alongside consistently rising AOPP levels, with certain risk factors identified as contributing to the severity of OM.

Background: Traditional metrics such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) fail to accurately assess the health outcomes associated with abdominal adiposity, because they neglect the intricacies of adipose tissue distribution. Notably, the variability in body composition scaled to height remains underexplored in Chinese demographics. This study introduces height-normalised indices of abdominal adiposity using computed tomography (CT) scans and further assesses their associations with various health outcomes.

Background: Small amounts of DNA from a perpetrator collected during crime-scene investigations can be masked by large amounts of DNA from the victim. These samples can provide important information for the perpetrator's conviction. Short tandem repeat (STR) detection system is not sensitive enough to detect trace amounts of minor components in unbalanced mixed DNA.

Article Synopsis
  • Blood-containing mixtures, often found at crime scenes, pose challenges in forensic analysis due to the difficulty of identifying the specific blood donor among mixed samples.
  • This study introduces a novel genetic marker called "blood-specific methylation-microhaplotype," utilizing 10 selected loci, which includes both hypomethylated and hypermethylated sites associated with blood for improved detection and donor identification.
  • By employing the Random Forest algorithm to classify allele types, the researchers achieved an exceptionally high discrimination power of 0.999999298, enabling the successful identification of blood presence and donors in complex blood mixtures.

The performance of Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) microscopy depends critically on the fluorescent probe. Ultrasmall Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) exhibit large Stokes shift, and good stimulated emission response, which are potentially useful for STED imaging. However, Au NCs are polydispersed in size, sensitive to the surrounding environment, and difficult to control surface functional group stoichiometry, which results in reduced density and high heterogeneity in the labeling of biological structures.

Precise mapping and regulation of cell surface receptors hold immense significance in disease treatment, such as cancer, infection, and neurodisorders, but also face enormous challenges. In this study, we designed a series of adjustable multivalent aptamer-based DNA nanostructures to precisely control their interaction with receptors in tumor cells. By profiling surface receptors on 12 cell lines using 10 different aptamers, we generated a heatmap that accurately distinguished between various tumor types based on multiple markers.

Rapid, sensitive and selective biosensing is highly important for analyzing biological targets and dynamic physiological processes in cells and living organisms. As an emerging tool, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) system is featured with excellent complementary-dependent cleavage and efficient trans-cleavage ability. These merits enable CRISPR system to improve the specificity, sensitivity, and speed for molecular detection.

Background: Osteoporosis and obesity are closely related, and the relationships between different types of obesity and osteoporosis are inconsistent.

Objective: Our objective was to summarize earlier data concerning the association between osteoporosis and obesity (general and central), and to compare the impacts of these two obesity indicators on osteoporosis.

Methods: From inception to May 2021, a comprehensive search in electronic bibliographic databases was conducted, and the search was updated in December 2021, July 2022 and June 2023.

The GA118-24B Genetic Analyzer (hereafter, "GA118-24B") is an independently developed capillary electrophoresis instrument. In the present research, we designed a series of validation experiments to test its performance at detecting DNA fragments compared to the Applied Biosystems 3500 Genetic Analyzer (hereafter, "3500"). Three commercially available autosomal short tandem repeat multiplex kits were used in this validation.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an endogenous signaling molecule with broad therapeutic effects. Here, a multifunctional X-ray-triggered carbon monoxide (CO) and manganese dioxide (MnO ) generation nanoplatform based on metal carbonyl and scintillating nanoparticles (SCNPs) is reported. Attributed to the radioluminescent characteristic of SCNPs, UV-responsive Mn (CO) is not only indirectly activated to release CO by X-ray but can also be degraded into MnO .

Sulfur fertilizers play an important role in increasing the yield and improving the dough quality of bread wheat, but their regulatory mechanism remains unclear. In this study, 0 kg·ha (S0) and 60 kg·ha (S60) of sulfur were applied on the anthesis date; subsequently, immature wheat grains at 8, 13, and 18 days post-anthesis (DPA) were subjected to integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to investigate the changes in the gene/metabolite activity in a typical strong-gluten wheat, Gaoyou2018 (GY2018). Our data show that the S60 treatment could significantly increase the grain yield and grain protein content by 13.

Background: China has the largest number of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), and it tends to increasingly grow in the future, putting an enormous burden on disease control and prevention in China. While glycemic variability (GV) came to be an important indicator of blood glucose control in diabetic patients, studies suggested that premeal snacks may help blood glucose control, but there are still some problems to be researched. Therefore, we designed this trial to evaluate which kind of premeal snacks would lead to better effects on GV under two diet patterns in pre-diabetes subjects and to evaluate assessments of acceptability and compliance, behavior, and metabolism changes in individuals will be described.

A nano-porous Al/Au skeleton is constructed to effectively improve the utilization rate of the active MnO and the overall adhesion between the current collector and MnO in an electrodeposition system. The Al/Au current collector is prepared by first forming a nano-porous structure on the surface of Al foil through etching modification, and subsequently coating an ultra-thin Au layer onto the Al foil. The active MnO is electrodeposited on the Al/Au current collector to fabricate a novel Al/Au/MnO electrode.

Melatonin (MT) is a small molecule indole hormone that plays an important role in the regulation of biological processes and abiotic stress resistance. Previous studies have confirmed that MT promotes the normal development of plants under stress by mediating physiological regulation mechanisms. However, the physiological mechanism of exogenous MT regulating seed germination and seedling growth of wheat under salt stress is still unclear.

Nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloys show broad applicability in biomedical fields. However, the unexpected aggregation of bacteria and the corrosion of body fluid on NiTi-based medical devices often lead to the leakage of nickel ions, resulting in inevitable allergic and cytotoxic activities. Therefore, the capture and detection of nickel ions are important to avoid serious adverse reactions caused by NiTi-based medical devices.
