Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an important neurotransmitter that promotes sleep and reduces anxiety, but its natural synthesis in the body is insufficient, necessitating dietary intake. This study utilized a combination of germination, the addition of active barley powder, and fermentation to enhance GABA content in an enzymatically hydrolyzed highland barley beverage. The samples were divided into five groups: highland barley (HB), germinated highland barley (GB), highland barley supplemented with another high-glutamic-acid decarboxylase-active highland barley powder TB13 (BT), germinated barley supplemented with TB13 (GBT), and germinated barley supplemented with TB13 followed by fermentation (GBTF).

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a severe malignancy with high incidence and mortality rate in China, while the application of standard chemotherapeutic drugs for ESCC meets the barriers of high toxicity and multiple drug resistance (MDR). In recent years, the anticancer effects of artesunate (ART), a Chinese medicine monomer have gained extensive attentions due to its characteristics of low toxicity, high potency, and reversal of MDR. In this study, we develop the artesunate-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNART) to overcome the poor water solubility and bioavailability of ART, further improving the efficiency of ART on ESCC treatment.

As a highly enriched endosomal protein within neuronal cells, NSG1 has been discovered to facilitate the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, the precise mechanisms behind this phenomenon have yet to be elucidated. The pivotal role of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in triggering the EMT and its significant contribution towards tumor metabolic reprogramming-responsible for EMT activation-has been robustly established.

Various methods have been proposed currently to detect amethopterin (ATP, a widely used anticancer drug that is also called methotrexate); however, a simple and low-cost electrochemical method coupled with high sensitivity is scarce. In this study, by using low-cost and readily available nanocarbon black (NCB), which has excellent conductivity and stable dispersion in water as well as large surface area, as electrode materials to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), a simple, inexpensive and highly-sensitive electrochemical sensor was constructed based on NCB/GCE. The electrochemical behaviors of ATP at both NCB/GCE and GCE were studied; the results show that the peak current of ATP at NCB/GCE is extremely higher than that at the bare GCE.

Purpose: Our pilot study has shown that cystatin SN (CST1) protein is highly expressed in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues. We intend to develop a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) available for serum CST1 detection and define the diagnostic value of CST1 detection for early ESCC patients, and establish a panel of CST1 with traditional tumor markers to improve the diagnostic sensitivity for early ESCC.

Methods: Detection performance of CLEIA for CST1 was evaluated by linearity, detection limit, accuracy, precision, anti-interference and stability.

Background: The effects of sevoflurane on right ventricular (RV) function are incompletely understood. In a rat model of experimentally induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), we studied effects of sevoflurane on RV function and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase/soluble guanylate cyclase (iNOS/sGC) signaling pathway. We hypothesized that sevoflurane would improve RV function in rats with PAH via a iNOS/sGC pathway.

In this work the phase behavior of [6,6]-phenyl C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blends with different poly(phenylene vinylene) (PPV) samples is investigated by means of standard and modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry (DSC and MTDSC) and rapid heat-cool calorimetry (RHC). The PPV conjugated polymers include poly(2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MDMO-PPV), High T(g)-PPV which is a copolymer, and poly((2-methoxy-5-phenethoxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MPE-PPV). Comparisons of these PPV:PCBM blends with regioregular poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT):PCBM blends are made to see the different component miscibilities among different blends.

Background: The muscular dystrophies exemplify a class of systemic disorders for which widespread protein replacement in situ is essential for treatment of the underlying genetic disorder. Somatic gene therapy will require efficient, scale-independent transport of DNA-containing macromolecular complexes too large to cross the continuous endothelia under physiological conditions. Previous studies in large-animal models have revealed a trade-off between the efficiency of gene transfer and the inherent safety of the required surgical and pharmacological interventions to achieve this.
