Centromeres reside in rapidly evolving, repeat-rich genomic regions, despite their essential function in chromosome segregation. Across organisms, centromeres are rich in selfish genetic elements such as transposable elements and satellite DNAs that can bias their transmission through meiosis. However, these elements still need to cooperate at some level and contribute to, or avoid interfering with, centromere function.

Dehydration, a common condition where the amount water lost from the body exceeds intake, disrupts metabolic processes and negatively impacts health and performance. Rehydration, the process of restoring body fluids and electrolytes to normal levels, is crucial for maintaining physiological health. In vivo dehydration models are experimental systems used to study the effects of dehydration on living organisms.

Background: Emerging evidence suggested the association between gut dysbiosis and Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression. However, it remained unclear how the gut microbiome and neuroinflammation in the brain mutually interact or how these interactions affect brain functioning and cognition. Here we hypothesized that "gut-brain" axis mediated by microbial derived metabolites was expected to novel breakthroughs in the fields of AD research and development.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the effects of acteoside on metabolic changes in young rats with purinomycin aminonucleoside nephropathy (PAN) using urine metabolomics to identify potential biochemical markers and metabolic pathways involved.
  • - Acteoside was found to significantly lower the urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio in these rats, with 17 differential metabolites linked to amino acid metabolism being identified, particularly in phenylalanine and proline pathways.
  • - Two key biomarkers, leucylproline and acetophenone, demonstrated strong diagnostic potential, suggesting that acteoside helps treat PAN in young rats by influencing amino acid metabolism, which may aid in understanding its role in chronic glomerulonephritis treatment

This study aims to establish the ultra-performance liquid chromatography(UPLC) fingerprint and multi-indicator quantitative analysis method for Schisandrae Sphenantherae Fructus(SSF) and to screen out the potential quality markers(Q-markers) of hepatoprotection based on network pharmacology. The similarity analysis was performed using the Chinese Medicine Chromatographic Fingerprint Similarity Evaluation System, which showed that the similarity of the fingerprints of 15 samples from different regions ranged from 0.981 to 0.

Gametogenesis is vulnerable to selfish genetic elements that bias their transmission to the next generation by cheating meiosis. These so-called meiotic drivers are widespread in plants, animals, and fungi and can impact genome evolution. Here, we summarize recent progress on the causes and consequences of meiotic drive in males, where selfish elements attack vulnerabilities in spermatogenesis.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) was a major cause of end-stage renal failure and a common microvascular complication in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Acteoside (ACT) was the main ingredient extracted from the leaves of Rehmannia glutinosa, which had the functions of entering the lung, moisturizing the skin and relieving itching, nourishing yin and tonifying the kidney, cooling blood, and stopping bleeding. ACT had attracted worldwide interest because of its therapeutic effects on DM and its complications.

Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids in lotus () seed plumules and leaves exhibit significant tissue specificity for their pharmacological effects and potential nutritional properties. Herein, 46 benzylisoquinoline alkaloids were identified via UPLC-QTOF-HRMS, of which 9 were annotated as glycosylated monobenzylisoquinoline alkaloids concentrated in the seed plumules. The spatial distribution of targeted benzylisoquinoline alkaloids in leaves, seed plumules, and milky sap was determined via MALDI-MSI.
