Sex disparity is a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) hallmark, demonstrating aggressiveness and mortality more frequently in men than in women. However, the components of its basis remain largely unknown. It was identified in HCC frequent loss of heterozygosity of general transcript factor IIH subunit 2 (GTF2H2), a potential estrogen pathway gene.

Resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy agents like oxaliplatin (OXA) poses significant challenges in the treatment of cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Centrin 2 (CETN2), which functions in nucleotide excision repair (NER) of DNA damage, is overexpressed in HCC. We investigated the potential role of CETN2 in modulating the sensitivity of HCC cells to OXA.

Background: Pregnancy-associated atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a form of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) caused by uncontrolled activation of the complement system during pregnancy or the postpartum period. In the intensive care unit, aHUS must be differentiated from sepsis-related multiple organ dysfunction, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet (HELLP) syndrome. Early recognition of aHUS is critical for effective treatment and improved prognosis.

Rotavirus (RV) is a significant contributor to diarrhea in both young children and animals, especially in piglets, resulting in considerable economic impacts on the global pig industry. Isoleucine (Ile), a branched-chain amino acid, is crucial for regulating nutrient metabolism and has been found to help mitigate diarrhea. This study aimed to assess the impact of isoleucine supplementation in feed on colonic barrier function, colonic microbiota, and metabolism in RV-infected weanling piglets.

Ovarian development significantly influences the laying performance of geese. In this study, the transcriptome analysis was conducted on the ovarian tissues of Wanxi White Geese during the pre-laying (KL), laying (CL), and ceased-laying period (XL). Short Time-series Expression Miner (STEM) analysis and miRNA-mRNA regulatory network construction were performed to identify the key genes and miRNAs regulating laying traits.

Background: Long-chain non-coding RNA (LINC00261) in the treatment of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with I is still unknown despite its proven anti-tumour effect in thyroid cancer (TC) and other types of cancer.

Methods: The database and RT-qPCR were used to analyze the expression level of LINC00261 in PTC and cell lines. PTC cells resistant to I (TPC-1/R) were created through ongoing exposure to a lethal dose of I, and a subcutaneous xenotransplantation model was developed using PTC mice.

The hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is an important neuroendocrine regulatory center involved in egg-laying process in poultry. However, its mechanism of regulating broodiness behavior and laying performance in geese remains unclear. This study explored the molecular mechanism by which the HPG axis regulates brooding behavior in Wanxi white geese (WWG).

Objective: SNOMED CT provides a standardized terminology for clinical concepts, allowing cohort queries over heterogeneous clinical data including Electronic Health Records (EHRs). While it is intuitive that missing and inaccurate subtype (or is-a) relations in SNOMED CT reduce the recall and precision of cohort queries, the extent of these impacts has not been formally assessed. This study fills this gap by developing quantitative metrics to measure these impacts and performing statistical analysis on their significance.

Background: Rotavirus (RV) is a major cause of diarrhea in young children and animals, especially piglets, leading to substantial economic losses in the global pig industry. Isoleucine (Ile), a branched-chain amino acid, plays an important role in regulating nutrient metabolism and has been shown to improve diarrhea. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Ile supplementation on the mucosal immune barrier of the small intestine in RV-infected weaned piglets.

Studies on the prognosis of hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation following modern therapies for newly diagnosed MM (NDMM) are lacking. In this retrospective study, we aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors and prognosis of HBV reactivation in NDMM. A total of 33 of 355 patients with NDMM and HBV reactivation were included in this study.

Introduction: Peripheral central venous catheters are common vascular access devices used in patients with tumors. To prevent catheter shedding and displacement, it is essential to use medical adhesives to secure the catheters. Repeated adhesion and removal of medical adhesives can weaken the barrier function of the skin, leading to medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSI), which can increase the patients' pain and medical expenses.

Background: In the era of novel agents, the clinical outcomes of induction treatment and the impact of the number of high-risk cytogenetic abnormalities (HRA) in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) need to be explored.

Objective: Through this study, we aim to analyze the effectiveness of different induction treatments and explore the survival outcomes of patients with varying numbers of HRA.

Methods: A total of 734 patients from seven medical centers were included in our study.

Background & Aims: The association between Wilson disease and various ATP7B mutations is well-established; however, the molecular mechanism underlying the functional consequence of these mutations, particularly the splicing mutations, remains unclear. This study focused on the ATP7B c.1543+1G>C variant, to reveal a universal pathogenic mechanism of the ATP7B mutants with altered N-terminus.

Article Synopsis
  • MGF (mangiferin) shows potential in reducing acute liver injury (ALI) caused by carbon tetrachloride (CCl) through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Research demonstrated that MGF treatment lowers serum liver injury markers and inflammatory cytokines, while reducing cell death and promoting protective enzyme activity in liver tissue.
  • The protective effects of MGF are linked to the activation of the Nrf2-antioxidant response element (ARE) pathway, highlighting a possible mechanism for its therapeutic action against ALI.

A novel type of tailless FBG smart bolt with good performance is developed. Owe to the innovative design of an integrated FBG sensor comprising a strain measured FBG and a temperature-compensated FBG, the tailless FBG smart bolt serves the purpose of torque monitoring or bolt looseness monitoring. We use a theoretical approach to establish the linear correlation between the applied torque and the central wavelength of the tailless FBG smart bolt.

Recent studies have shown a correlation between piglet diarrhea and the gut microbiota. However, the precise mechanism by which intestinal microorganisms and their metabolites influence diarrhea in weaned piglets remains unclear. This study explored differences in the gut microbiota and associated metabolites between healthy and diarrheic-weaned piglets using macrogenomic and metabolomic analyses.

Perioperative neurocognitive dysfunction (PND) occurs in elderly individuals undergoing anesthesia and surgery. To explore the potential molecular mechanisms, we performed right-sided cervical exploratory surgery under sevoflurane anesthesia in 18-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. Anxiety-depression-like behaviors and learning memory abilities were assessed using the Open Field Test (OFT) and Novel Object Recognition (NOR).

Clinical research data visualization is integral to making sense of biomedical research and healthcare data. The complexity and diversity of data, along with the need for solid programming skills, can hinder advances in clinical research data visualization. To overcome these challenges, we introduce VisualSphere, a web-based interactive visualization system that directly interfaces with clinical research data repositories, streamlining and simplifying the visualization workflow.
