The controllable fabrication and performances of monodisperse genipin-cross-linked gelatin-chitosan composite (GGC) embolic microspheres with both uniform sizes and adjustable characteristics of elasticity and degradation are reported for the first time. Monodisperse emulsion droplets are fabricated as templates by using gelatin and chitosan aqueous solution as the disperse phase in a microfluidic device, and the chemical cross-linking of gelatin and chitosan inside droplet templates is achieved with genipin that transfers from the collection bath into the droplets. The sizes of droplet templates and the resultant GGC microspheres can be flexibly controlled and predicted by adjusting the fluid flow rates and the device dimensions.

Intracellular bacteria can evade the attack of the immune system and the bactericidal effects of most antibiotics due to the protective effect of the host cells. Herein, inspired by the stimuli-responsive behaviors of biological ion channels, a kind of synergistic cascade potassium ion (K)-responsive nanoparticles gated with K-responsive polymers is ingeniously designed to target intracellular bacteria and then control drug release. Due to the cooperative interaction of host-guest complexation and conformational transition of K-responsive polymers, the grafted gates based on these polymers could recognize high K concentration to reverse the negatively charged nanoparticles into positively charged ones for targeting bacteria and subsequently inducing a switch from the hydrophobic shrinking "off" state to the hydrophilic stretching "on" state for drug release.

Rapid and sensitive detection of the concentration of sialic acid (SA) in serum is crucial for early tumor screening and prognostic assessment; however, it still remains challenging. Here, we propose a novel kind of hydrogel grating sensor with boron affinity and molecular imprinting effects (B-MIP) for the rapid and sensitive detection of SA concentration in serum. The hydrogel gratings feature uniform surface relief microstructures and incorporate highly specific recognition binding sites into SA molecules provided by boron affinity and molecular imprinting.

A facile strategy for efficient and continuous fabrication of monodisperse gas-core microcapsules with controllable sizes and excellent ultrasound-induced burst performances is developed based on droplet microfluidics and interfacial polymerization. Monodisperse gas-in-oil-in-water (G/O/W) double emulsion droplets with a gas core and monomer-contained oil layer are fabricated in the upstream of a microfluidic device as templates, and then water-soluble monomers are added into the aqueous continuous phase in the downstream to initiate rapid interfacial polymerization at the O/W interfaces to prepare monodisperse gas-in-oil-in-solid (G/O/S) microcapsules with gas cores. The sizes of both microbubbles and G/O/W droplet templates can be precisely controlled by adjusting the gas supply pressure and the fluid flow rates.

A thermo-responsive poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel, exhibiting an interesting phenomenon of an opaque-transparent-opaque transition in the successive processes of heating and cooling, is reported. It is fabricated by means of both the porogenic effect of hydroxypropyl cellulose and the cononsolvency effect of PNIPAM in a mixed solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide and water. After being mildly triggered by body temperature, the hydrogel is used to spontaneously decrypt the quick response code within 4 min and then autonomously encrypts the code again within 10 min at room temperature.

Most cases of delayed wound healing are associated with bacterial biofilm infections due to high antibiotic resistance. To improve patient compliance and recovery rates, it is critical to develop minimally invasive and efficient methods to eliminate bacterial biofilms as an alternative to clinical debridement techniques. Herein, we develop a dissolving microneedle system containing Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs)-decorated silk fibroin microspheres (SFM-AgNPs) and antibiotics for synergistic treatment of bacterial biofilm infection.

Article Synopsis
  • Low-level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is commonly used for treating tendon disorders, but its effectiveness and mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • A study analyzed 55 relevant studies (50 on animals and 5 on humans) to evaluate LLLT's effects on tendon healing, finding that it boosts collagen formation and improves tendon strength in animals while reducing inflammation.
  • Despite positive results in animal models, human studies showed mixed outcomes, with only anti-inflammatory benefits observed, leaving the overall impact of LLLT on human tendon physiology and biomechanics still uncertain.

Transcatheter arterial radioembolization (TARE) is of great significance for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the existing radioembolic microspheres still have problems such as non-degradability, non-uniform size, and inability to directly monitor in vivo, which hinders the development of TARE. In this paper, a novel radioembolic agent, I-labeled methacrylated gelatin microspheres ( I-GMs), is prepared for the treatment of HCC.

Thermochromic microspheres based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) attract much attention in detection and sensor due to the noticeable color response and fast response rate. However, some issues such as uneven color display and narrow coloration range still limit their practical applications. Herein, novel thermochromic microspheres with homogeneous color displays and wide thermochromic range are designed by combining the microfluidic technology with the magnetically-induced self-assembly technique and copolymerizing acrylamide (AM) with N-isopropylacrylamide.

Controllable mass production of monodisperse droplets plays a key role in numerous fields ranging from scientific research to industrial application. Microfluidic ladder networks show great potential in mass production of monodisperse droplets, but their design with uniform microflow distribution remains challenging due to the lack of a rational design strategy. Here an effective design strategy based on backstepping microflow analysis (BMA) is proposed for the rational development of microfluidic ladder networks for mass production of controllable monodisperse microdroplets.

A novel chemosensor is developed for the sensitive and facile detection of trace strontium ions (Sr) based on the ion-imprinted hydrogels. With Sr as the templates, the ion-imprinted hydrogels are synthesized by copolymerizing the ion-responsive units 5'-O-acryloyl-2',3'-O-isopropylidene guanosine (APG) and the thermo-responsive units N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM). In the presence of Sr, APG units can self-assemble to form planar G-quartets via the complexation with Sr, which are introduced into the gel network during polymerization.
