Hypobaric hypoxia (HH) occurring at high altitudes activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and increases circulating erythropoietin (EPO) levels. EPO stimulates red blood cell production (erythropoiesis), enhancing oxygen transport in arterial blood to counteract hypoxemia. The present study tested the hypothesis that SNS contributes to EPO activation by HH through epinephrine (EPI) release from the adrenal medullae.

Prompt and precise diagnosis of pituitary hyperplasia secondary to primary hypothyroidism (PHPH) is crucial to avoid unwarranted pituitary surgery and potential permanent impairment. Although PHPH may present similarly to pituitary adenoma, it is responsive to thyroxine therapy, underscoring the critical role of differential diagnosis in the treatment of adolescent patients.

Background: Recent research has underscored the potentially protective role of dietary antioxidants against chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI), which reflects the overall intake of key dietary antioxidants, has been identified as a crucial metric for exploring this relationship. Although previous research has shown a negative correlation between CDAI levels and stroke risk in prediabetic individuals, there remains a substantial gap in understanding this association among individuals with dia-betes, who are at an inherently greater risk for cerebrovascular events.

Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC)-independent lymphopoiesis has been elucidated in murine embryos. However, our understanding regarding human embryonic counterparts remains limited. Here, we demonstrated the presence of human yolk sac-derived lymphoid-biased progenitors (YSLPs) expressing CD34, IL7R, LTB, and IRF8 at Carnegie stage 10, much earlier than the first HSC emergence.

Pickering emulsions seem to be an effective strategy for encapsulation and stabilization of essential oils. In this work, a novel raspberry-liked Pickering emulsion (RPE) loading Mosla chinensis 'Jiangxiangru' essential oil (MJO) was successfully engineered by using ethyl lauroyl arginate (ELA) decorated nanosilica (ELA-NS) as particles emulsifier. And the ELA-NS-stabilized MJO Pickering emulsion (MJO-RPE) was further prepared into inulin-based microparticles (MJO-RPE-IMP) by spray-drying, using inulin as matrix formers.

In point-of-care diagnostics, the continuous monitoring of sweat constituents provides a window into individual's physiological state. For species like horses, with abundant sweat glands, sweat composition can serve as an early health indicator. Considering the salience of such metrics in the domain of high-value animal breeding, a sophisticated wearable sensor patch tailored is introduced for the dynamic assessment of equine sweat, offering insights into pH, potassium ion (K), and temperature profiles during episodes of heat stress and under normal physiological conditions.

This study aims to develop and evaluate the biocompatibility and osteogenic potential of a novel injectable strontium-doped hydroxyapatite bone-repair material. The properties of strontium-doped hydroxyapatite/chitosan (Sr-HA/CS), hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HA/CS) and calcium phosphate/chitosan (CAP/CS) were assessed following their preparation via physical cross-linking and a one-step simplified method. Petri dishes containing and were inoculated with the material for investigations.

Rain-source urban rivers have the characteristics of small water capacity, lack of dynamic water supply, and being easily polluted. This study analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of river water quality and the response of characteristic pollutants to rainfall based on daily rainfall data and 21 water quality indicators of nine major river basins in Shenzhen (excluding Shenzhen-Shantou) from 2015 to 2021 by using the single-factor assessment method, comprehensive pollution index method, hierarchical cluster analysis, and Pearson correlation. The results showed that: ① in 2015, the water quality of most sections in the whole region was inferior Class V water.

Background: Dynamic course of flourine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-FDG PET/CT) Patlak muti-parametric imaging spatial distribution in the targeted tissues may reveal highly useful clinical information about the tissue's metabolic properties. The characteristics of the Patlak multi-parametric imaging in lung cancer and the influence of different delineation methods on quantitative parameters may provide reference for the clinical application of this new technology.

Methods: A total of 27 patients with pathologically diagnosed lung cancer underwent whole-body dynamic F-FDG PET/CT examination before treatment.

The differentiation of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) begins with the transition from the naive to the primed state. The formative state was recently established as a critical intermediate between the two states. Here, we demonstrate the role of the histone chaperone FACT in regulating the naive-to-formative transition.

Essential oils have become increasingly popular in fields of medical, food and agriculture, owing to their strongly antimicrobial, anti-inflammation and antioxidant effects, greatly meeting demand from consumers for healthy and safe natural products. However, the easy volatility and/or chemical instability of active ingredients of essential oils (EAIs) can result in the loss of activity before realizing their functions, which have greatly hindered the widely applications of EAIs. As an emerging trend, micro/mesoporous nanomaterials (MNs) have drawn great attention for encapsulation and controlled release of EAIs, owing to their tunable pore structural characteristics.

Actinomycins are known for their anti-tumor, antibacterial and antiviral activities, and in particular for the ability of actinomycin D as a clinical drug to treat a variety of cancers. In our ongoing work to obtain novel natural products from endophytic actinomycetes derived from traditional Chinese herbs, we identified the potential to produce actinomycins in YINM00002, a strain derived from . According to genome mining, we isolated actinomycins D and V (1 and 2) and small amounts of 4-methyl-3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (4-MHA) derivates (3 and 4) from strain fermentation broth.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a widespread breathing disorder, leads to intermittent hypoxia (IH). Patients with OSA and IH-treated rodents exhibit heightened sympathetic nerve activity and hypertension. Previous studies reported transcriptional activation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidases (Nox) by HIF-1 (hypoxia-inducible factor-1) contribute to autonomic dysfunction in IH-treated rodents.

Bacterial infection has been a major threat to worldwide human health, in particular with the ever-increasing level of antimicrobial resistance. Given the complex microenvironment of bacterial infections, conventional use of antibiotics typically renders a low efficacy in infection control, thus calling for novel strategies for effective antibacterial therapies. As an excellent candidate for antibiotics delivery, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) demonstrate unique physicochemical advantages in antibacterial therapies.

Article Synopsis
  • - A new fluorescence sensor using FeO@COF/Fe has been developed to accurately detect chloramphenicol (CAP) in natural samples, crucial for human health.
  • - The sensor operates on a principle where CAP competes with a conjugated form for antibody binding, and an enzyme-catalyzed reaction restores fluorescence for detection.
  • - This method shows a reliable detection range with excellent stability and reusability, performing well compared to traditional HPLC methods for CAP analysis.
