Hydrothermally grown iodate, KCeIO, featuring polar 0D [Ce(IO)] units, has shown the highest visible light driven (VLD) photocatalytic activity in metal iodates reported before. The enhanced VLD photocatalytic property results from a synergistic effect between the narrow band gap and polar 0D [Ce(IO)] units, as confirmed using first principles calculations.

Infection and inflammation are known risk factors for neonatal brain injury. Mycoplasma and Gram-positive bacteria, for which Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) plays a key role in recognition and inflammatory response, are among the most common pathogens in the perinatal period. Here, we report that systemic activation of TLR2 by Pam3CSK4 (P3C) increases neural tissue loss and demyelination induced by subsequent hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in neonatal mice.

Hierarchical Context Modeling for Video Event Recognition.

IEEE Trans Pattern Anal Mach Intell

September 2017

Current video event recognition research remains largely target-centered. For real-world surveillance videos, targetcentered event recognition faces great challenges due to large intra-class target variation, limited image resolution, and poor detection and tracking results. To mitigate these challenges, we introduced a context-augmented video event recognition approach.

Phthalates are a large family of ubiquitous environmental chemicals suspected of being endocrine disruptors, with exposure to these chemicals during prenatal and postnatal development possibly resulting in reproductive disorders. Di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) is widely used in consumer and industrial products, and although its exposure in the general population has increased in recent years, the mechanisms behind DiBP-induced reproductive disorders in male offspring remain unclear. Here, pregnant mice were exposed to 0 or 450 mg/kg bw/day DiBP via diet from gestation day (GD) 0 to GD21.

KBeBOF (KBBF) is the only nonlinear optical crystal available to generate deep-ultraviolet (DUV) laser output by direct harmonic generation. High-precision refractive indices, including in the DUV region, were measured, and starting from a double resonance model of polarizability, new dispersion relations of the refractive indices were deduced from the measured data. The predicted phase matching angles for second-harmonic generation down to 165 nm from the new relations agree well with the previous reported values.

A series of a novel beryllium-free KBBF family of nonlinear-optical materials AZnBOX (A = K, Rb and X = Cl; A = Na, K, Rb and X = Br) were successfully synthesized through molecular engineering design, and single crystals of AZnBOCl (A = K, Rb) were grown by a spontaneous nucleation technique from self-flux systems. As a representative for the halogen KBBF family of crystals, KZnBOCl features the infinite lattice layer [ZnBOCl] made up of BO and ZnOCl anionic groups, and the in-layer BO groups are completely coplanar and well-aligned. Besides, KZnBOCl exhibits high transmittance in the range of 300-2000 nm with a UV-transmission cutoff of around 200 nm according to transmission spectra.

The perinatal period has often been described as immune deficient. However, it has become clear that immune responses in the neonate following exposure to microbes or as a result of tissue injury may be substantial and play a role in perinatal brain injury. In this article we will review the immune cell composition under normal physiological conditions in the perinatal period, both in the human and rodent.

BACKGROUND Preterm birth is an important cause of death and developmental disorder in neonates. Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to regulate body inflammatory factor levels that stimulate elevation of uterine contraction hormones, such as prostaglandin, thus causing preterm birth. However, current observations regarding the relationship between vitamin D and preterm birth are inconsistent.

Reforestation is a critical means of addressing the environmental and social problems of deforestation. China's Grain-for-Green Program (GFGP) is the world's largest reforestation scheme. Here we provide the first nationwide assessment of the tree composition of GFGP forests and the first combined ecological and economic study aimed at understanding GFGP's biodiversity implications.

Three-dimensional biofilm-electrode reactors (3D-BERs), which possess a large effective area to drive the reductive degradation of contaminants, have recently attracted attention for wastewater treatment. There have been few studies of the potential and risks of the application of this system on the removal of antibiotics. Here four 3D-BERs were designed to initially assess the potential for electrical stimulation to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX), tetracycline (TC) and chemical oxygen demand, and to study the fate of the corresponding antibiotic resistance genes.

A novel I2-catalyzed direct conversion of cyclohexanones to substituted catechols under mild and simple conditions has been described. This novel transformation is remarkable with the multiple oxygenation and dehydrogenative aromatization processes enabled just by using DMSO as the solvent, oxidant, and oxygen source. This metal-free and simple system demonstrates a versatile protocol for the synthesis of highly valuable substituted catechols and therefore streamlines the synthesis and modification of biologically important molecules for drug discovery.

Wood decomposition releases almost as much CO2 to the atmosphere as does fossil-fuel combustion, so the factors regulating wood decomposition can affect global carbon cycling. We used metabarcoding to estimate the fungal species diversities of naturally colonized decomposing wood in subtropical China and, for the first time, compared them to concurrent measures of CO2 emissions. Wood hosting more diverse fungal communities emitted less CO2, with Shannon diversity explaining 26 to 44% of emissions variation.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional perfluoroalkyl chemicals have been restricted due to their toxic effects, but new alternatives like HFPO2 and HFPO4 are largely unregulated and not well-studied.
  • In a study with mice, daily exposure to HFPO2 and HFPO4 caused liver enlargement and damage, especially with HFPO4, alongside significant changes in liver gene expression related to lipid metabolism.
  • Both HFPO2 and HFPO4 demonstrated harmful liver effects similar to older chemicals, underscoring the need for further investigation into the risks posed by these emerging substances to health and the environment.

Plant diversity surely determines arthropod diversity, but only moderate correlations between arthropod and plant species richness had been observed until Basset et al. (Science, 338, 2012 and 1481) finally undertook an unprecedentedly comprehensive sampling of a tropical forest and demonstrated that plant species richness could indeed accurately predict arthropod species richness. We now require a high-throughput pipeline to operationalize this result so that we can (i) test competing explanations for tropical arthropod megadiversity, (ii) improve estimates of global eukaryotic species diversity, and (iii) use plant and arthropod communities as efficient proxies for each other, thus improving the efficiency of conservation planning and of detecting forest degradation and recovery.

Results: There was a decrease in accessory genital organ weight, plasma testosterone, and sexual behavior, as well as a low number of c-Fos-positive cells and a large nNOS-positive cell area in orchidectomized rats. Administration of the herbal medicine increased accessory genital organ weight, testosterone level, mating behavior, and c-Fos-positive cell number, while it decreased the nNOS-positive cell area in orchidectomized rats.

Conclusion: An increase of plasma testosterone after administration of "kidney-nourishing" herbal medicine might contribute to the elevated sexual function and activity in orchidectomized rats.

The phylogeny of tits has been studied using various molecular markers, but their phylogenetic relationships remain controversial. To further investigate their taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships, the entire mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) and five nuclear segments were sequenced from 10 species of tits and two outgroups (Sylviparus modestus and Remiz consobrinus), followed by the comparison of mitogenomic characteristics and reconstruction of phylogenetic relationship based on the different datasets. The results revealed the following: the mitogenomes of 10 ingroup tits, each 16,758-16,799bp in length, displayed typical mitogenome organization and the gene order found in most previously determined Passeriformes mitogenomes; close relationships existed between Parus major and P.
