Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is associated with cognitive decline in aging and age-related neurodegenerative disease. Epigenetic mechanisms are involved in the maintenance of long-term hypoxia-adapted cellular phenotypes. In the present study, the epigenetic signatures such as DNA methylation and histone acetylation, as well as S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) cycle using chronic cerebral hypoperfusion rat model were explored.

Galectins are a lectin family characterized by a conserved sequence motif in the carbohydrate recognition domain, which preferential binds to galactosyl moieties. However, few studies about the biological roles of galectins in invertebrates have been reported except for the galectin (CvGal1) from the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica. Furthermore, galectins have been described in only a few crustacean species, and no functional studies have been reported so far.

A fast, selective, and quantitative ultra-fast liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous quantitation of polygalaxanthone III, ginsenoside Rb1, ginsenoside Rd, ginsenoside Re, and ginsenoside Rg1 in the plasma of rat and beagle dog after oral administration of Kai-Xin-San. After addition of the internal standard, salidroside, the plasma samples were extracted by liquid-liquid extraction and separated on a Venusil MP C18 column with methanol/0.01% acetic acid water as mobile phase.

The exact prevalence of hypersensitivity to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) remains unclear in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) because many of these patients routinely avoid the use of NSAIDs. Since the diagnosis of aspirin hypersensitivity is based mainly on history, the aspirin challenge protocol is seldom used clinically in China. The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of NSAID hypersensitivity in Chinese patients diagnosed with CRS.

Castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), whose pathogenesis is known to be regulated by microRNAs (miRNAs), has a poor prognosis. In our present study, we found that the expression of miR-361-5p in CRPC was lower than in androgen-dependent prostate cancer (ADPC), indicating that miR-361-5p may play an important role in the progression of ADPC to CRPC. The role of miR-361-5p in prostate cancer (PCa) has not been evaluated until date.

Ficolins, a kind of lectin containing collagen-like and fibrinogen-related domains (FReDs, also known as FBG or FREP), are involved in the first line of host defense against pathogens. In this study, two ficolins, namely, MrFico1 and MrFico2, from the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii were identified. In contrast to other ficolins, these two ficolins have no collagen-like domain, but such ficolins contain a coiled region and a FReD domain.

Background: The distribution of allergens may vary with different geographic areas, suggesting the importance of local epidemiological data to support evidence-based prevention and management of allergic diseases. We investigated the distribution of common allergens in allergic patients in Guangzhou, southern China.

Methods: 7,047 patients with allergic symptoms were examined for serum sIgE to 15 common allergens in this region, based on the protocol of reversed enzyme allergosorbent test.

The aim of this study was to investigate the methylation status of fragile histidine triad (FHIT) and the effects of FHIT on cell growth and cyclin D1 expression in hepatoma cells. The total proteins from the human hepatoma cell lines HepG2, Hep3B and Huh7 were collected and the expression levels of FHIT were analyzed. The methylation status in the promoter region of FHIT in the hepatoma cells was measured using methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Fasudil may induce preconditioning and postconditioning against myocardial ischemia‑reperfusion injury in normal rats, however, their effectivenesses in hypercholesterolemia remains to be determined. The study aimed to investigate whether fasudil induces preconditioning and postconditioning in hypercholesterolemic rats and to determine the roles of the phosphoinositol 3‑kinase (PI3K)/Akt/endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) pathway and mitochondrial KATP (m‑KATP) channels in this process. Isolated rat hearts underwent 30 min global ischemia and 120 min reperfusion.

Ischemic postconditioning (IPO) reduces lethal reperfusion injury under normal conditions, but its effectiveness in hypercholesterolemia (HC) is disputed. We measured the cardioprotection of IPO in hypercholesterolemic rats and determined the roles of glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) and the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP). Isolated rat hearts underwent 30-min global ischemia and 120-min reperfusion.

Tube and Pelle are essential components in Drosophila Toll signaling pathway. In this study, we characterized a pair of crustacean homologs of Tube and Pelle in Scylla paramamosain, namely, SpTube and SpPelle, and analyzed their immune functions. The full-length cDNA of SpTube had 2052 bp with a 1578 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a protein with 525 aa.

The Antarctic ice microalgae Chlamydomonas sp. ICE-L which is highly resistant to salt stress holds promise in providing an alternative species for the production of microalgal oil. We studied the effects of the alga in confrontation with NaCl stress on the growth, oil yield and expression of fatty acid desaturase genes.

C-type lectins function as pattern recognition receptors and play important roles in the innate immune system of crustaceans. In this study, we reported a new CTL gene (designated as PcLec5) from red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. PcLec5 was mainly distributed in hepatopancreas, gills and intestine, and the PcLec5 transcripts were up-regulated in all the three tissues after challenge with bacteria Vibrio anguillarum.

The fresh-water green unicellular alga Haematococcus pluvialis is known to accumulate astaxanthin under stress conditions. In the present study, transcriptional expression of eight genes involved in astaxanthin biosynthesis exposed to EBR (25 and 50 mg/L) was analyzed using qRT-PCR. The results demonstrated that both 25 and 50 mg/L EBR could increase astaxanthin productivity and the eight carotenogenic genes were up-regulated by EBR with different expression profiles.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 3% of cancers in adults as well as the most common neoplasm of the adult kidney with the highest mortality rate at over 40%. Metastasis is the most significant process affecting the clinical management of RCC patients. It occurs in multiple sequential steps.

A new class of transcripts, long non-coding RNAs (IncRNAs), has been recently found to be pervasively transcribed in the genome. These mRNA-like molecules, which lack significant protein-coding capacity, once thought to be a part of the dark matter, now have been implicated in a wide range of biological functions through diverse and as yet poorly understood molecular mechanisms. Multiple facets of evidence increasingly link mutations and dysregulations of IncRNAs to prostate cancer (PCA).

To avoid photoinhibition, plants have developed diverse photoprotection mechanisms. One of the short-term high light protection mechanisms in plants is non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), which dissipates the absorbed light energy as thermal energy. In the green alga, Ulva linza, the kinetics of NPQ starts with an initial, quick rise followed by a decline, and then a second and higher rise at longer time periods.

The green-tide-forming macroalga Ulva linza was profiled by transcriptome sequencing to ascertain whether the alga carries both C3 and C4 photosynthesis genes. The key enzymes involved in C4 metabolism including pyruvate orthophosphate dikinase (PPDK), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PCK) were found. When measured under normal and different stress conditions, expression of rbcL was higher under normal conditions and lower under the adverse conditions, whereas that of PPDK was higher under some adverse conditions, namely desiccation, high salinity, and low salinity.
