Most modern dietary guidelines recommend limiting lard and animal fats due to their potential link to metabolic diseases. Nevertheless, emerging evidence suggests that lard may not significantly contribute to diabetes and that moderate lard intake could even benefit lipid metabolism. This commentary suggests a reevaluation of lard’s classification as a “bad actor” in the context of diabetes, urging colleagues to give greater consideration to and empirically validate this intriguing hypothesis.

As a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) has not been fully elucidated. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification, observed in various RNAs, is implicated in inflammatory bowel diseases. Methyltransferase-like 14 (METTL14) is the major subunit of the methyltransferase complex catalyzing m6A modifications.

Patients suffering from chronic stress develop numerous symptoms, including emotional and cognitive deficits. The precise circuit mechanisms underlying different symptoms remain poorly understood. We identified two distinct basal forebrain cholinergic subpopulations in mice projecting to the dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) or ventral hippocampus (vHPC), which exhibited distinct input organizations, electrophysiological characteristics, transcriptomics, and responses to positive and negative valences of stimuli and were critical for cognitive and emotional modulation, respectively.

Objective: This study evaluates the potential mechanisms through which stress affects sleep quality and examines the mediating roles of rumination, social anxiety, emotion-focused coping strategies, and smartphone dependence in the relationship between stress and sleep quality.

Methods: From October 2023 to April 2024, we conducted three surveys with 426 university students and utilized structural equation modeling to explore the mechanisms by which stress impacts sleep quality.

Results: Stress not only significantly predicts sleep quality but also significantly affects sleep quality through rumination, emotion-focused coping strategies, and smartphone dependence as independent mediators.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea has emerged as a significant threat to the global swine industry. The shedding and exposure status of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in intensive farms is not completely understood. In this study, a total of 56,598 clinical samples collected from 256 intensive pig farms in 20 provinces in China from 2022 to 2023, were evaluated for PEDV using quantitative real-time PCR.

Omalizumab enables children who are intolerant to AIT to initiate AIT successfully. Combination therapy better improves asthma and rhinitis symptoms, FeNO, and lung function compared to single SCIT or omalizumab treatment. Combination therapy reduces the incidence of adverse reactions during the initial phase of SCIT and enhances its safety.

Background: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has significant productivity and economic impacts in swine herds. Accurately determining the PRRSV status at the herd level is crucial for producers and veterinarians to implement strategies to control and eliminate the virus from infected herds. This study collected oropharyngeal swabs (OSs), nasal swabs (NSs), oral fluid swabs (OFs), rectal swabs (RSs), and serum samples continuously from PRRSV challenged pigs under experimental conditions and growing pigs under field conditions.

  • Intraoperative goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) enhances fluid management during gastrointestinal surgeries by regulating fluid input based on real-time physiological monitoring.
  • A study compared 60 patients, split into two groups—one receiving GDFT and the other traditional fluid management—analyzing factors like postoperative recovery time and complication rates.
  • Results showed that GDFT significantly reduced intraoperative blood loss, shortened recovery and hospitalization times, improved pain management, and enhanced cardiac output compared to traditional methods.

The main active constituents of plants of the Paeonia genus are known to have antitumor activity. Hundreds of compounds with a wide range of pharmacological activities, including monoterpene glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, stilbenes, triterpenoids, steroids, and phenolic compounds have been isolated. Among them, monoterpenes and their glycosides, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and other constituents have been shown to have good therapeutic effects on various cancers, with the main mechanisms including the induction of apoptosis; the inhibition of tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion; and the modulation of immunity.

Stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1) is the endoplasmic reticulum Ca sensor for store-operated calcium entry and is closely associated with carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Previously, we found that STIM1 is upregulated in melanoma cells resistant to the serine/threonine-protein kinase B-raf inhibitor vemurafenib, although the mechanism underlying this upregulation is unknown. Here, we show that vemurafenib resistance upregulates STIM1 through an epidermal growth factor (EGF)/epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1)/TEA domain transcription factor 2 (TEAD2) signaling axis.

Background: Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) is a highly contagious disease caused by Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV), resulting in a mortality rate of suckling piglets as high as 100%. Vaccination is the primary strategy for controlling PEDV infection, however, there is currently a lack of reliable methods for assessing the efficacy of vaccination. This study aimed to analyze serum and colostrum samples from 75 parturient sows with a specific vaccination strategy to measure levels of IgG, IgA, and neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) against PEDV, and to investigate the correlation between serum and colostrum antibody levels, as well as to identify potential biomarkers that can be used to evaluate immunization effects under field conditions.

Background: This study explores whether the impact of environmental factors (community services usage, CSU) on geriatric depression is mediated by psychological resilience and moderated by the COMT (catechol-O-methyltransferase) gene val158met polymorphism.

Methods: The data consists of 13,512 entries from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) collected in the years 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2018. The study employed a Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) to examine the relationship between CSU and geriatric depression, including the mediating effect of psychological resilience and the moderating role of the comt gene val158met gene polymorphism in this relationship.

Article Synopsis
  • The classical swine fever virus (CSFV) disrupts serine metabolism, crucial for antiviral immunity, to enhance its replication and evade immune responses.
  • CSFV infection causes the deacetylation of the enzyme PHGDH, leading to its degradation, reduced serine production, and weakened innate immune defenses.
  • The study highlights CSFV's intricate manipulation of immune metabolism, revealing how it inhibits the mitochondria-MAVS-IRF3 pathway, decreases IFN-β production, and boosts viral proliferation.

Introduction: PEDV, and , are highly contagious diarrheal pathogens that have caused significant harm to the global swine industry. Co-infections with multiple pathogens are common, making it challenging to identify the actual causative agents depending only on clinical information. It is crucial to develop a reliable method to simultaneously detect and differentiate these pathogens.
