Pomegranate peel polyphenols (PPP) are natural compounds known for their various biological activities; however, they are easily degraded by environmental conditions, leading to a reduction in their biological activity and health benefits. Therefore, improving the stability of PPP is a critical question that needs to be addressed. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of five common microcapsule wall materials-carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMCNa), sodium alginate (SA), gum Arabic (GA), beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and hydroxypropyl starch (HPS)-in encapsulating PPP to enhance its stability and antioxidant activity.

The livestock industry uses ofloxacin, an antibiotic, to prevent several animal diseases; however, the overdose of ofloxacin used in animal farming treatments may appear in food products and cause some adverse human health effects. Hence, there is an immediate need to develop a method suitable for on site large-scale detection of ofloxacin residues in animal-derived foods. This study aimed to prepare a monoclonal antibody with high sensitivity and affinity for ofloxacin by re-synthesizing the ofloxacin hapten and synthesizing the corresponding complete antigen.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates combining PRIMA-1 with oxaliplatin (L-OHP) to enhance treatment efficacy for colorectal cancer (CRC) while addressing the drug's toxicity and resistance issues.
  • The results show that the combination therapy significantly improves cancer cell death and reduces cell migration and colony formation, regardless of p53 mutation status.
  • RNA-seq analysis reveals different cellular responses to the treatments based on p53 status, and in vivo studies confirm that the combination therapy enhances effectiveness and reduces toxicity compared to PRIMA-1 alone.

Herein, we reported a sustainable and simple method involving electrochemical-catalyzed decarboxylative annulation and hydroaminomethylation of cyclic aldimines with -arylglycines by switching the reaction solvents. When the reaction was carried out in MeCN/HO or HO, the resulting products included imidazolidine-fused sulfamidates and C4-aminomethylated cyclic aldimines, obtained in moderate to good yields, respectively. Mechanistically, a radical pathway was proposed to be involved in this approach.

Ambient mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) enables hundreds of analytes in tissue sections to be directly mapped at atmospheric pressure with minimal sample preparation. This field is currently experiencing rapid growth, with numerous reported ambient ionization techniques resulting in a "hundred flowers bloom" situation. Nanospray desorption electrospray ionization (nano-DESI), developed by the Laskin group in 2010, is a widely used liquid-extraction-based ambient ionization technique that was first used for mass spectrometry imaging of tissue in 2012.

Introduction: Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a crucial role in the tumor microenvironment (TME), and their polarization state significantly influences patient outcomes. This study investigates the inhibitory effects of β-glucan extracted from Candida albicans on lung cancer progression, focusing on its impact on TAM polarization and the induction of ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death.

Methods: Utilizing both in vivo animal models and in vitro cellular assays, we assessed the impact of β-glucan on tumor growth, cellular proliferation, and migration.

Background: Immunity reconstitution (IR) is crucial for pediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), but the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on lymphocyte subsets post-transplant remains unclear. Therefore, we assessed immune cell dynamics in children after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods: We enrolled 42 children, including 21 post-HSCT SARS-CoV-2 infected and 21 matched, non-infected historical controls (1:1 matching based on propensity scores).

Asthma, a prevalent chronic respiratory disease, is characterized by airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness, significantly impacting global health. Current treatments, including corticosteroids, face limitations due to variable patient responses and side effects. This study explores the therapeutic potential of Cistanche, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, in an asthmatic mouse model induced by house dust mites (HDM).

Introduction: The leaf-height-seed (LHS) plant ecology strategy scheme posits that functional traits such as leaf size, stem height and seed mass play a key role in life history of plants. Although many studies have explored the LHS scheme across plant species, to our knowledge, no study has so far linked functional trait patterns across different plant clades.

Methods: Here, we first explored the LHS scheme of several plant clades, i.

Objective: To compare the results of invasive prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) and explore the underlying mechanism.

Methods: Clinical data of pregnant women undergoing PGT and invasive prenatal diagnosis at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from January 2019 to December 2022 were collected. The results of PGT and invasive prenatal diagnosis were compared, and the outcomes of pregnancies were followed up.

Tumor deposits (TDs) represent a specific form tumor metastasis observed in colorectal cancer (CRC). The lack of successfully established cell lines for TDs, as well as the molecular mechanisms by which TDs occur remain largely unknown. Here, we established paired CRC organoids, including a human primary cancer organoid and its TD organoid, from a 46-year-old male patient with CRC.

In this study, a new methodology, in which the cation and chiral agent are doped in positive and negative nematic liquid crystal mixture to form cation-doped positive-negative chiral nematic liquid crystals (PN-CNLCs), is proposed. These PN-CNLCs are capable of achieving a wide wavelength tuning range close to 90 nm under the action of a high-frequency electric field. The dielectric interaction between these two liquid crystals with different dielectric anisotropies in the electric field allows for the effective change of the pitch of the CLCs.
