Background: Dogs-whether pets, rural, or stray-exhibit distinct living styles that influence their fecal microbiota and resistomes, yet these dynamics remain underexplored. This study aimed to analyze and compare the fecal microbiota and resistomes of three groups of dogs (37 pets, 20 rural, and 25 stray dogs) in Shanghai, China.

  • Certain bacterial infections, like syphilis and gonorrhea, remain a major global health concern, with the study focusing on their impact from 1990 to 2021 through the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study.
  • The analysis revealed that gonococcal infection had the highest incidence rate, while syphilis had the highest disability-adjusted life-years (DALY) rate among the examined diseases.
  • Despite a significant decline in most infections, particularly tetanus, lower Socio-demographic Index (SDI) regions like sub-Saharan Africa continue to bear a heavier burden from these diseases.

Current loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-coupled clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (LAMP-CRISPR) biosensing in two-step or one-step formats has been applied to next-generation accurate molecular diagnosis. However, two-step LAMP-CRISPR assays intrinsically confront aerosol contamination, while one-step assays possess a compromised detection performance. To this end, we propose an enhanced two-step LAMP-CRISPR assay (ETL-CRISPR) with an engineered polymerase to mediate ultrasensitive DNA detection and thoroughly eliminate aerosol contamination.

Article Synopsis
  • - In 2021, China was declared malaria-free by the WHO, yet there remains a public health issue with severe cases of imported malaria arising from globalization, prompting a study on its epidemiology from 2014 to 2021 in five provinces.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 5,559 malaria cases, finding that Plasmodium falciparum was the most prevalent species, predominantly affecting males, with significant complication rates linked to specific factors.
  • - The study identified protective factors against malaria complications, such as previous infections, while increased age, misdiagnosis, and longer treatment delays were highlighted as risk factors, supporting the need for improved prevention strategies.

  • The study focused on mapping tick distribution and habitat suitability on Chongming Island in China, aiming to assess the potential invasion risks posed by ticks to human and animal health.
  • Researchers used GIS technology and species distribution models, based on 19 environmental variables, to predict habitat suitability for ticks in 2050 and 2070 under different climate change scenarios.
  • The findings highlighted significant impacts of climate on tick habitats, forecasting a decrease in suitable areas under certain scenarios, which can inform future tick control strategies to reduce the risk of tick-borne infections.

The Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae, Kp) populations carrying both resistance-encoding and virulence-encoding mobile genetic elements (MGEs) significantly threaten global health. In this study, we identified a new anti-CRISPR gene (acrIE10) on a conjugative plasmid with self-target sequence in K.

Bacteriophages (phages) are nanostructured viruses with highly selective antibacterial properties that have gained attention beyond eliminating bacteria. Specifically, M13 phages are filamentous phages that have recently been studied in various aspects of nanomedicine due to their biological advantages and more compliant engineering capabilities over other phages. Having nanofiber-like morphology, M13 phages can reach varied target sites and self-assemble into multidimensional scaffolds in a relatively safe and stable way.
