A highly efficient cross-coupling of diarylborinic acids and anhydrides with aryl chlorides and bromides has been effected by using a palladium catalyst system co-supported by a strong σ-donor N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl) imidazol-2-ylidene, and a strong π-acceptor phosphite, triphenylphosphite, in tert-BuOH in the present of K(3)PO(4)·3H(2)O. Unsymmetrical biaryls with a variety of functional groups could be obtained in good to excellent yields using as low as 0.01, 0.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of bioactive glasses on cutaneous wound healing in both normal rats and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Bioactive glass ointments, prepared by mixing the sol-gel bioactive glass 58S (SGBG-58S), nanobioactive glass (NBG-58S) and the melt-derived 45S5 bioactive glass (45S5) powder with Vaseline (V) at 18% weight percentage, were used to heal full thickness excision wounds. Pure V was used as control in this study.

Our preliminary studies confirmed that an active principle region of Buyang Huanwu decoction, comprising alkaloid, polysaccharide, aglycon, glucoside and volatile oil, can induce bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell differentiation into neurons. Mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling was identified as one of the key pathways underlying this differentiation process. The present study shows phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase and phosphorylated p38 protein expression was increased after differentiation.

An abnormally high concentration of organic matter (OM) in Lake Hulun, a large shallow eutrophic lake located in the sparsely populated Hulun Buir Steppe, was observed in a field investigation. Little was known about the origin of the OM. To identify the source of the OM in Lake Hulun, the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, natural abundance of stable isotope and three dimensional excitation emission matrix (3DEEM) fluorescence spectroscopy techniques were employed.

Background: Glioma recurrence usually occurs close to the tumor resection margins as a result of residual infiltrating glioma cells. 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) fluorescence-guided resection of gliomas has been demonstrated to enhance discrimination of tumor tissue and to improve survival. ALA-based photodynamic therapy is an effective albeit still experimental adjuvant treatment option for gliomas.

Objective: To compare the efficiency of different early enteral nutrition (EN) with Ensure, Nutrison, and Peptison in postoperative patients with esophageal carcinoma.

Methods: A total of 45 postoperative patients with esophageal carcinoma were randomly divided into three groups using random digit table: Ensure group (n=15), Nutrition group (n=15), and Peptison group (n=15). Enteral nutrition was given using nasogastric tube from the 2nd postoperative day for 8 days.

Biomimetic scaffolds are appealing products for the repair of bone defects using tissue engineering strategies. In the present study, novel biomimetic composite scaffolds, with similar properties to natural bone, were prepared, blended and cross-linked with bioactive glass, type I collagen and phosphatidylserine. When exposed to cell culture solution in the absence of a cellular source, the composite scaffolds form crystals with octahedral structure.

Background And Objective: In recent years, it has been proven that surgical treatment for solitary pulmonary metastases has achieved satisfactory results. Consequently, the study aims to investigate the diagnosis, indications for surgery, operative techniques, and prognostic factors of the surgical resection for solitary pulmonary metastases, and to improve the survival rate of patients with pulmonary metastases.

Methods: The medical records of 156 patients with surgical procedures at our institution were retrospectively reviewed.

This study aims to discuss the correlation between miR-1258 and the expression of heparanase (HPSE) in the cancer cells of the patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the inhibition mechanism of miR-1258 on the invasion of lung cancer cell. The expression level of miR-1258 was detected by TaqMan real-time PCR assay, the expression of HPSE was detected by immunohistochemistry, and the expression level of HPSE in the cancer tissue of each case was detected by western blot and in its adjacent tissue of 53 patients with NSCLC. The influence of miR-1258 on the invasion potential of the lung cancer cell line A549 was studied with lentivirus system including cloned miR-1258 fragments subsequently.

Objective: To investigate the effect of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) on the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) in lung cancer A549 cells.

Methods: Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta 1) in different concentrations was used to induce EMT in lung cancer A549 cells. The morphological changes were observed under phase-contrast microscope.

An electrochemical sensor based on Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles (NPs)-coated poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA)-functionalized graphene (Fe(3)O(4)-PDDA-G) nanocomposite was fabricated for sensitive detection of acetaminophen. The nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The electrochemical behaviors of acetaminophen on Fe(3)O(4)-PDDA-G composite film modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV).

Heavy metals as one of major pollutants is harmful to the health of forest ecosystems. In the present paper, the concentrations of thirteen heavy metals (Fe, Al, Ti, Cr, Cu, Mn, V, Zn, Ni, Co, Pb, Se and Cd) were compared between natural and plantation forests in the Mt. Lushan by ICP-AES and atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Objective: To assess early and late outcomes of patients with minimal mediastinal lymph nodes metastasis N2 non-small cell lung cancer disease unexpectedly detected during the operation, who underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery lobectomy for clinical stage I.

Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed and analyzed the medical records of 263 patients underwent surgery between January 2004 and December 2007, who were diagnosed as having early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (clinical stage was cT1-2N0M0, stage I) before the surgery, but were found to have mini mediastinal lymph nodes metastasis disease (clinical stage was pT1-2N2M0, stage IIIa) unexpectedly detected during the operation and after the operation. All patients underwent lobectomy and systematic lymph nodes dissection as radical treatments.
