Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the connection between the age of kindergarten children and their vaccination coverage, highlighting its relevance for future vaccine development.
  • Using a sample of 1,830 healthy children, researchers found that 22.46% carried certain bacteria, with significant non-linear relationships between age and the coverage of two vaccines, PCV10 and PCV13.
  • The findings indicate that 2-year-old children had the highest vaccination rates, and the identified virulence genes suggest potential targets for new protein vaccines.

Background: Acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding is common in clinical practice, and the colon is responsible for the majority of cases. However, appendiceal bleeding is an extremely rare cause. Appendiceal bleeding due to vascular diseases, such as angiodysplasia and Dieulafoy's lesion, may result in massive lower gastrointestinal bleeding.

Objectives: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are thought to have a malignant potential. However, utilizing endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) to differentiate GISTs from other types of subepithelial lesions (SELs) remains challenging. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnostic systems for EUS have been reported to have a promising performance, although the results of the previous studies remain controversial.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical value of color and power doppler sonography (CPDS) when combined it with 99mTc-dimercaptosuccinic acid scintigraphy (DMSA) in assessment of acute pyelonephritis (APN) in infants.

Methods: A total of 79 children with APN admitted to our hospital from June 2016 to Jan 2019 were enrolled, including 52 boys and 27 girls, age range 1 month to 3 years old. All cases followed the diagnostic criteria for acute pyelonephritis and excluded anatomical abnormalities of urinary system.

Objective: To study the clustering and influencing factors of carriage among kindergarten children, and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention of pneumococcal diseases.

Methods: The multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method was used to collect nasal swabs via the nasal vestibule at both sides from 1 702 kindergarten children in Liuzhou, China. A questionnaire survey was performed on their parents.

Objective: To study the clinical features of children with periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome, a polygenic and multifactorial autoinflammatory disease with unknown pathogenesis.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 13 children with PFAPA syndrome.

Results: All 13 children had disease onset within the age of 3 years, with a mean age of onset of (14±10) months.

It's known that having multiple sexual partners is one of the risk factors of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection which is a major cause of cervical cancer. However, it is not clear whether the number of sexual partners is an independent risk factor for cervical cancer. We identified relevant studies by searching the databases of MEDLINE, PubMed and ScienceDirect published in English from January 1980 to January 2014.

Antiphospholipid syndrome is a multi-system disease characterized by the formation of thromboembolic complications and/or pregnancy morbidity, and with persistently increased titers of antiphospholipid antibodies. We report the case of a 50-year-old, previously healthy man who presented with fever and new-onset, dull abdominal pain. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan showed segmental small bowel obstruction, for which an emergency laparotomy was performed.

Background: An increasing number of evidence suggests that pancreatic cancer contains cancer stem cells (CSCs), which may be relevant to the resistance of chemotherapy. Latexin (Lxn) is a negative regulator of stem cell proliferation and we investigate the effects of Lxn on CD133+ pancreatic cancer stem-like cells.

Methods: CD133+ miapaca-2 cells, a human pancreatic carcinoma cell line, were isolated and sorted by magnetic activated cell sorting and flow cytometry.

Background: Previous studies for non-communicable disease cotrol, including cancer, have mostly relied on health literacy in adults. However, limited studies are available for adolescents. This study aimed to assess the status and determinants of health literacy in in-school adolescents in Guangdong, China.

Objective: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of extra-intestinal cancer, whereas its impact on cholangiocarcinoma (CC) remains unknown. The aim of this study was to obtain a reliable estimate of the risk of CC in IBD patients through a meta-analysis of clinical observational studies.

Methods: Relevant studies were retrieved by searching PUBMED, EMBASE and Web of Science Databases up to Dec 2013.

There is a lot of debate on the relationship between vitamin D receptor polymorphisms and risk of breast cancer. Herein, we quantitatively analyzed the published case-control studies on this relationship by meta- analysis, performing a bibliographic search from Pubmed and CNKI up to July 31, 2013. The included case- control studies for Fok1, Bsm1, Taq1, Apa1, Cdx2 and Poly-A were 16, 19, 20, 10, 4, 6, respectively.

Aim: To assess the association between smoking and alcohol consumption and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ECC) through a meta-analysis of clinical observational studies.

Methods: A literature search was conducted using Embase and MEDLINE databases from inception to 31 May 2013 without language limitations, and by manually searching the references of retrieved articles. Case-control and cohort studies that investigated the association between smoking or alcohol consumption and ECC were included.

Goals: The aim of this study was to explore whether prophylactic use of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) could aid in the treatment of refractory ascites on the basis of current randomized controlled trials.

Background: TIPS is more effective for refractory ascites versus large-volume paracentesis. At present, however, the survival advantage is not clear within populations of undifferentiated patients.

Aim: To investigate if there is an association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the risk of pancreatic cancer.

Methods: All relevant studies published before 11 October, 2012 were identified by a systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, BIOSIS Previews and the Cochrane Library databases and with cross-referencing. The observational studies that reported RR or OR estimates with 95%CIs for the association between HBV or HCV and pancreatic cancer were included.

Aim: To examine fibrinogen-like protein 2 (fgl2) expression during taurocholate-induced acute pancreatitis progression in rats and its correlation with pancreatic injury severity.

Methods: Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) group (n = 24) and the sham operation (SO) group (n = 24). Sodium taurocholate (4% at doses of 1 mL/kg body weight) was retrogradely injected into the biliopancreatic ducts of the rats to induce SAP.

The CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cell (Treg) is a special kind of T cell subset. Studies have showed that Treg cells are involved in a number of physiological processes and pathologic conditions such as autoimmune diseases, transplantation tolerance and cancer. Tregs with unique capacity for immune inhibition can impair anti-tumour immunity and help tumor cells to escape from immune surveillance.
