Background: The mixture of volatile organic compounds in the headspace gas of urine may be able to distinguish lung cancer patients from relevant control populations.

Methods: Subjects with biopsy confirmed untreated lung cancer, and others at risk for developing lung cancer, provided a urine sample. A colorimetric sensor array was exposed to the headspace gas of neat and pre-treated urine samples.

Boron-doped graphene quantum dots (B-GQDs) are prepared via a one-pot acid-free microwave approach with graphene oxide as the carbon source and borax as the boron source. Boron atoms are incorporated into the graphene framework by attacking the defects in the graphene structure, deriving an atomic percentage of 1.44% in the final product.

This paper is motivated from a retrospective study of the impact of vitamin D deficiency on the clinical outcomes for critically ill patients in multi-center critical care units. The primary predictors of interest, vitamin D2 and D3 levels, are censored at a known detection limit. Within the context of generalized linear mixed models, we investigate statistical methods to handle multiple censored predictors in the presence of auxiliary variables.

The pothole is one of the special habitats in river ecosystems, which is simply structured, well-defined, food chain-short, and easily controlled, thus making it a model system in ecological, evolutionary and phenological studies. Here we first reviewed hydrological, chemical and physical characteristics of potholes, their biological community (biodiversity, environmental factors) as well as food chain (competition, predation and parasitism) in mountain rivers. The differences between pothole ecosystems and river ecosystems in hydrological characteristics, biological community and food-chain were analyzed.

A sensitive, lable-free and low cost fluorescence aptasensor was developed for detecting 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) by using 8-OHdG aptamer (Apt) as a recognition probe and N-methyl mesoporphyrin IX (NMM) as a reporter. The method is based on the conformational switching of a K(+)-stabilized G-quadruplex to a 8-OHdG-stabilized one. NMM can selectively bind to K(+)-stabilized G-quadruplex instead of 8-OHdG-stabilized one.

As an attractive technique for the improvement of biomaterials, Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) has been applied to modifying the titanium material for dental implant application. The present study investigated the cytocompatibility and early osseointegration of fluoride-ion-implanted titanium (F-Ti) surface and implants, both characterizing in their composition of titanium oxide and titanium fluoride. The cytocompatibility of F-Ti was evaluated in vitro by using scanning electron microscope, Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, alkaline phosphatase activity assay, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction.

Common limitations of clustering methods include the slow algorithm convergence, the instability of the pre-specification on a number of intrinsic parameters, and the lack of robustness to outliers. A recent clustering approach proposed a fast search algorithm of cluster centers based on their local densities. However, the selection of the key intrinsic parameters in the algorithm was not systematically investigated.

Background: Our group developed a protocol, entitled Early Appropriate Care (EAC), to determine timing of definitive fracture fixation based on presence and severity of metabolic acidosis. We hypothesized that utilization of EAC would result in fewer complications than a historical cohort and that EAC patients with definitive fixation within 36 h would have fewer complications than those treated at a later time.

Methods: Three hundred thirty-five patients with mean age 39.

PI*ZZ alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency poses risk for lung disease through 2 different mechanisms: in which deficient AAT levels cause a depleted proteolytic screen and, separately, a proinflammatory effect of Z polymers produced both by alveolar macrophages and by the liver. Ample data support the first mechanism, while the possible contribution of the second 2 proinflammatory mechanisms is currently unknown. Experience with a 74 year-old PI*ZZ female who underwent single lung transplantation and subsequent orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) may shed light on the relative contributions of each of the potential mechanisms.

Commercial clouds provide on-demand IT services for big-data analysis, which have become an attractive option for users who have no access to comparable infrastructure. However, utilizing these services for human genome analysis is highly risky, as human genomic data contains identifiable information of human individuals and their disease susceptibility. Therefore, currently, no computation on personal human genomic data is conducted on public clouds.

Epirubicin, an anthracycline derivative, is one of the main line treatments for brain tumors. The aim of the present study was to verify that epirubicin alters the growth and morphological characteristics of U‑87 glioma cells. In the present study, the effects of epirubicin were tested using cellular and biochemical assays, which demonstrated its anti‑proliferative and cytotoxic effects, with an IC50 of 6.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of calcineurin in the down-regulation of left ventricular transmural voltage-dependent K(+) currents in heart failure. Transverse aorta was banded by using microsurgical techniques to create mouse heart failure model. Sham-operated (Sham) or aorta banded (Band) mice were randomized to receive calcineurin inhibitor cyclosporine A (CsA) or vehicle.

Background And Aim: Genetic variants in the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) gene have become an interesting topic for the study of genetic susceptibility to cancer, but their associations with the risk of gastric cancer have not been fully investigated.

Materials And Methods: In a hospital-based case-control study of 1002 gastric cancer patients and 1003 cancer-free controls, we genotyped four potentially functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs1034528G>C, rs17036508T>C, rs3806317A>G, and rs2295080T>G) of mTOR and assessed their associations with the risk of gastric cancer using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. We also used the multifactorial dimension reduction analysis to explore possible interactions and the false-positive report probabilities to assess significant findings.

Some patients classified as having lower-risk (LR)-disease by the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) fare more poorly than predicted. We examined the prognostic utility of IPSS, the MD Anderson LR-Prognostic System (LR-PSS), and the revised IPSS (IPSS-R) in a large cohort of patients classified as having IPSS LR-MDS in the MDS Clinical Research Consortium database. Actual overall survival (OS) was assessed in patients with IPSS LR-MDS (i.

Objective: To report a new endourological technique-percutaneous "sandwich" endopyeloplasty for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO).

Methods: In the study, 71 patients with UPJO had endopyeloplasty by percutaneous balloon dilation before and after endopyelotomy, so called "sandwich" endopyeloplasty. The ureter stent was removed after 2 months and all the patients were followed up at least 12 months by ultrasound, intravenous urogram (IVU) or renal scintigraphy.

Article Synopsis
  • Thirteen new compounds of N-aryl 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline were created and tested for their cancer-fighting abilities and drug-like characteristics.
  • The compound 4a showed exceptional effectiveness with low GI50 values (16-20 nM) against cancer cell lines, particularly in cases where the P-glycoprotein is overexpressed.
  • Compound 4a not only outperformed a benchmark drug (CA4) in inhibiting tubulin assembly but also demonstrated better water solubility and appropriate drug-like properties, indicating its potential as a new drug candidate.
