Domain related to iron (DRI) contains approximately 90 residues and is involved in iron and heme metabolism. Recent discoveries have annotated Dri1, a DRI-only protein from the cyanobacterium Synechocystis, as a regulator of succinate dehydrogenase in a b-type heme-dependent manner or as a c-type heme oxygenase. Here, we report high-resolution structures of Dri1 in complex with b-type and c-type hemes, respectively.

Despite the vital role of astrocytes in preserving blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity, their therapeutic potential as targets in ischemic stroke-induced barrier disruption remains underexplored. We previously reported externalization of phosphatidylserine (PS) on astrocytic membranes concurrent with the emergence of PS externalization in neurons. PS externalization of astrocytes induced microglial phagocytosis of astrocytes, resulting in reduced astrocyte-vascular coupling and subsequent BBB breakdown.

According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) belongs to the category of "Jing Long". Clinical management of BPH in TCM is root-aimed and kidney-targeted, in combination with the treatment of other viscera based on the syndrome differentiation of zang-fu organs. The neuro-endocrine-immune network of modern medicine is similar to the holistic concept of TCM.

Exercise is an effective way to alleviate breast cancer-induced cardiac injury to a certain extent. However, whether voluntary exercise (VE) activates cardiac signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the role of STAT3-microRNA(miRNA)-targeted protein axis in VE against breast cancer-induced cardiac injury.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the links between diet quality, as measured by the Healthy Eating Index-2020 (HEI-2020), and survival rates in ovarian cancer patients over a follow-up period until February 2023.
  • - It involved 1082 ovarian cancer patients aged 18-79, assessing their dietary habits before and after their diagnosis using a validated food questionnaire.
  • - Results indicated that higher diet quality scores led to better overall survival rates, while a decline in diet quality after diagnosis was linked to worse survival outcomes.

Background: The advances in deep learning-based pathological image analysis have invoked tremendous insights into cancer prognostication. Still, lack of interpretability remains a significant barrier to clinical application.

Methods: We established an integrative prognostic neural network for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), towards a comprehensive evaluation of both architectural and fine-grained information from whole-slide images.

  • - The study analyzed the diagnostic effectiveness of multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) in identifying jujube pit impaction in the esophagus among 40 patients from December 2018 to November 2019, with a focus on patient age, location of the impaction, complications, and treatment methods.
  • - A significant portion of the patients (75%) were 58 years or older and 80% of the jujube pits were located in the upper esophagus, with various shapes and densities; the analysis also categorized impactions based on their angle relative to the esophagus.
  • - Endoscopic evaluations revealed significant esophageal mucosal damage and perforations in some cases, highlighting MSCT's importance in assessing

  • The text reviews existing research on the connections between human papillomavirus (HPV) and various cancers, beyond the well-known anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers, highlighting inconsistencies in previous findings.
  • An umbrella review was conducted, covering 31 systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and assessed the quality and credibility of the evidence using established tools.
  • Findings revealed that while most studies had moderate to high quality, only one HPV type (HPV-18) showed convincing evidence for increased breast cancer risk, whereas HPV was found to be a highly suggestive risk factor for several other cancers, including oral and lung cancer.

Drug delivery systems (DDS) have recently emerged as a promising approach for the unique advantages of drug protection and targeted delivery. However, the access of nanoparticles/drugs to the central nervous system (CNS) remains a challenge mainly due to the obstruction from brain barriers. Immune cells infiltrating the CNS in the pathological state have inspired the development of strategies for CNS foundation drug delivery.

  • The study looked at how intermittent fasting (IF) affects our health by analyzing many other research studies to find useful information.
  • Researchers searched through databases to find existing evidence and looked closely at 34 different health outcomes, like weight and blood sugar levels.
  • Most of the studies reviewed were rated as high quality, and they found that IF can really help, especially for people who are overweight or have health issues like diabetes.

Background: Placebo control plays an important role in evaluating the effectiveness of interventions. Specifying differential effects of various placebo controls on migraine prevention would be essential in the explanation of preventive treatment for migraine and the indirect comparison between different prophylactic therapeutics.

Objectives: To access the impact of different non-pharmacologic placebo types on different outcomes in migraine patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Intratumoral immune status plays a crucial role in how patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma respond to therapy, especially with a combination of gemcitabine, oxaliplatin, lenvatinib, and anti-PD1 antibody.
  • High levels of certain CD8 T-cell markers (GZMB and proliferating CD8) and low levels of Macro CD5L predict better therapeutic responses, while shifts in T-cell markers indicate varying response levels.
  • The study also suggests that using anti-CTLA4 antibody can counteract therapy resistance caused by immune exhaustion, paving the way for more effective cancer treatments based on immune profiling.

  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different biopsy methods (targeted biopsy, systematic biopsy, and a combination of both) for diagnosing prostate cancer in patients with a high PI-RADS score (5).
  • A total of 585 patients underwent multiparametric MRI and biopsies, with results indicating that most tested positive for prostate cancer.
  • While the combined biopsy method showed a 100% detection rate for cancer, there were no significant differences in cancer detection rates among the other biopsy methods or stages, suggesting a potential optimization in sampling with fewer cores.

Objective: Previous systematic reviews demonstrated a potentially beneficial effect of probiotics on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, these studies are either affected by the inclusion of insufficient trials or by the problem of dependent data across multiple outcomes, and an overall effect size has not been provided. We aimed to determine the effect of probiotics on IBS through a three-level meta-analysis and clarify potential effect moderators.

Polymorphs of ZnHPO·2HO with centrosymmetry () and noncentrosymmetry (2) structures were prepared by modified solution evaporation and seed-crystal-induced secondary nucleation methods. In -ZnHPO·2HO, the zinc atoms are only octahedrally coordinated, while in 2-ZnHPO·2HO, they feature both tetrahedral and octahedral coordination. As a result, -ZnHPO·2HO features a 2D layered structure with lattice water molecules located in the interlayer space, while 2-ZnHPO·2HO features a 3D electroneutral framework of topology connected by Zn(1)O, Zn(2)O, and HPO units.
