Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a severe pregnancy complication and is an important cause for maternal and child death, premature delivery, and limited intrauterine growth and development. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of NGAL and cystatin C, alone and in combination, for early prediction of PE at 10 - 14 weeks of gestation.

Methods: Serum levels of NGAL and cystatin C were assessed in women at 10 - 14 weeks of gestation who subsequently developed PE (n = 128) and normal pregnancy outcome (n = 183).

The fingerprint technology could reflect the internal chemical characteristics of Chinese herbal medicine or preparation, which has the characteristics of "wholeness" and "fuzziness". It is suitable for evaluating the quality of intermediate and finished products in the production process of traditional Chinese medicine formula granules. A rapid and sensitive method for the determination of proteins is proposed with a coupled reagent of o-phthalaldehyde and sulfanilic acid by measuring the light scattering (LS) signals with a common spectrofluorometer. Mechanism investigations showed that o-phthalaldehyde couples at first with sulfanilic acid with fast speed and forms a new synthesized Schiff base dye, which then interacts with protein rapidly on acidic condition, resulting in greatly enhanced LS signals with the maximum peak located at 344 nm. Based on the linear relationship between enhanced LS intensities and concentrations of proteins, a novel assay of HSA and BSA is established in the linear range of 0.

In this paper, the formation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) as a result of the thermo-active redox reaction of chlorauric acid (HAuCl(4)) and glucose in alkaline medium was identified by measuring the plasmon resonance absorption, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, for the formation of Au NPs displays characteristic plasmon resonance absorption bands and corresponding LSPR signals. It was found that the resulted LSPR signals could be easily detected with a common spectrofluorometer. With increasing glucose concentration, the LSPR intensity displays linear response with the glucose content over the range from 2.
