Objectives: Hemorrhage is considered to be the primary sign of Dengue hemorrhagic fever and Dengue shock syndrome. In the present study we focused on the mechanism in the pro- and anti-coagulation after Dengue virus infection.

Methods: The effects of Dengue virus on the expression and secretion of tissue factor, tissue factor inhibitor, thrombomodulin, tissue plasminogen activator and plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells were detected in this study.

Identifying the genetic variants that increase the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in humans has been a formidable challenge. Adopting a genome-wide association strategy, we genotyped 1161 Finnish T2D cases and 1174 Finnish normal glucose-tolerant (NGT) controls with >315,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed genotypes for an additional >2 million autosomal SNPs. We carried out association analysis with these SNPs to identify genetic variants that predispose to T2D, compared our T2D association results with the results of two similar studies, and genotyped 80 SNPs in an additional 1215 Finnish T2D cases and 1258 Finnish NGT controls.

We have investigated the electrochemical synthetic mechanism of conductive polymer nanotubes in a porous alumina template using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as a model compound. As a function of monomer concentration and potential, electropolymerization leads either to solid nanowires or to hollow nanotubes, and it is the purpose of these investigations to uncover the detailed mechanism underlying this morphological transition between nanowire and nanotube. Transmission electron microscopy was used to characterize electrochemically synthesized PEDOT nanostructures and measure the extent of their nanotubular portion quantitatively.

The nuclear receptors of the NR1H and NR1I subgroups include the constitutive androstane receptor, pregnane X receptor, farnesoid X receptors, liver X receptors, and vitamin D receptor. The newly emerging functions of these related receptors are under the control of metabolic pathways, including metabolism of xenobiotics, bile acids, cholesterol, and calcium. This review summarizes results of structural, pharmacologic, and genetic studies of these receptors.

To evaluate the application of self-reinforced ploy-DL-lactide (SR-PDLLA) absorbable screws in the treatment of spongy bone and intra-articular fractures, the internal fixation with SR-PDLLA absorbable screw was performed on 58 cases,of which 25 were medial malleolus fractures, 14 condyle of humerus fractures, 9 tibial plateau fractures, 7 ulnar olecranon fractures, and 3 lateral malleolus fractures. Observations were made on the orthopaedic operation sites and overall conditions frequently and radiography was performed for periodic analysis. The results showed that SR-PDLLA absorbable screws were particularly effective and reliable, they had good biocompatibility in the treatment of spongy bone and intra-articular fractures and could be used safely in clinical practice.

Purkinje cell degeneration (pcd) mice are characterized by death of virtually all cerebellar Purkinje cells by postnatal day 30. In this study, we used DNA microarray analysis to investigate differences in gene expression between the brains of wild type and pcd mice on postnatal day 20, before the appearance of clear-cut phenotypic abnormalities. We identified 300 differentially expressed genes, most of which were involved in metabolic and physiological processes.

The growth hormone (GH) gene family represents an erratic and complex evolutionary pattern, involving many evolutionary events, such as multiple gene duplications, positive selection, the birth-and-death process and gene conversions. In the present study, we cloned and sequenced GH-like genes from three species of New World monkeys (NWM). Phylogenetic analysis strongly suggest monophyly for NWM GH-like genes with respect to those of Old World monkeys (OWM) and hominoids, indicating that independent gene duplications have occurred in NWM GH-like genes.

We present a simple algorithm that uses self-reported ethnicity information, pedigree structure, and affection status to group families into genetically more homogeneous subsets. This algorithm should prove useful to researchers who wish to perform genetic analyses on more-homogeneous subsets when they suspect that ignoring heterogeneity could lead to false-positive results or loss of power. We applied our algorithm to the self-reported ethnicity information of 159 families from the Veterans Affairs Cooperative Study of schizophrenia.

The transient receptor potential canonical type 5 (TRPC5) channel is a member of the channels that has been implicated in neurite extension and growth cone morphology of hippocampal neurons. Although homomeric TRPC5 channels are activated following stimulation of G(q/11)-coupled receptors, the exact mechanism for this activation remains unresolved. Using two-electrode voltage clamp recordings, we show that the activity of TRPC5 channels expressed in Xenopus oocytes is dependent on the presence of Ca2+ at the extracellular as well as the cytoplasmic side of the plasma membrane.

This paper presents the incineration tests of municipal solid waste (MSW) in a fluidized bed and the adsorption of activated carbon (AC) on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). An extraction and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique was used to analyze the concentrations of the 16 US EPA specified PAHs contained in raw MSW, flue gas, fly ash, and bottom ash. The potential role of endogenous ryanodine receptor (RyR) in modulating Ca2+ handling in HEK293 cells is controversial. Using Fura2/AM, here we provide evidence that caffeine can induce Ca2+ release from inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor-sensitive stores and Ca2+ entry in early passage numbers of HEK293 cells, but not in late passage ones. Ryanodine blocks caffeine-mediated effect, whereas 4-chloro-m-cresol can mimic these effects.

Color quantization (CQ) is an image processing task popularly used to convert true color images to palletized images for limited color display devices. To minimize the contouring artifacts introduced by the reduction of colors, a new competitive learning (CL) based scheme called the frequency sensitive self-organizing maps (FS-SOMs) is proposed to optimize the color palette design for CQ. FS-SOM harmonically blends the neighborhood adaptation of the well-known self-organizing maps (SOMs) with the neuron dependent frequency sensitive learning model, the global butterfly permutation sequence for input randomization, and the reinitialization of dead neurons to harness effective utilization of neurons.

The contents of eight trace elements(Mn, Cr, Pb, As, Se, Zn, Cd, Hg) in raw coal, bottom ash and fly ash were measured in a 220 t/h pulverized coal boiler. Factors affecting distribution of trace elements were investigated, including fly ash diameter, furnace temperature, oxygen content and trace elements' characters. One coefficient of Meij was also improved to more directly show element enrichment in combustion products.

Unlike in rodents, CCK has not been established as a physiological regulator in avian exocrine pancreatic secretion. In the isolated duck pancreatic acini, 1 nM CCK was required for stimulation of amylase secretion, maximal effect being achieved at 10 nM; picomolar CCK was without effect. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)/pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) receptor (VPAC) agonists PACAP-38 and PACAP-27 (10(-12)-10(-7) M) alone had no effect, but made picomolar CCK effective.
