Article Synopsis
  • VEGF-induced angiogenesis is hindered in hypercholesterolemia, but a peptide called D-4F may help improve this condition by reducing HDL's pro-inflammatory effects.
  • In a study, different mouse models were used to assess the impact of D-4F and VEGFA on heart function and angiogenesis after inducing a heart attack.
  • The results indicated that D-4F, when combined with VEGFA, enhanced angiogenesis and improved heart function in hypercholesterolemic mice by activating specific signaling pathways, although it did not have the same effect in another set of genetically modified mice.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the diagnostic value of central venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide difference (Pcv-aCO) and procalcitonin (PCT) in detecting bloodstream infections (BSI) from gram-negative bacteria.
  • Results showed significantly higher Pcv-aCO and PCT levels in gram-negative BSI patients compared to those with gram-positive infections, indicating these biomarkers could help differentiate between the two.
  • Both Pcv-aCO and PCT demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy, with Pcv-aCO showing slightly better sensitivity and specificity for early detection of gram-negative BSI, making them valuable tools in intensive care settings.

The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) has been described as a simple risk-stratified tool for several diseases. We explored the predictive role of the PNI on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity. A total of 101 patients with COVID-19 were included in this retrospective study from January 2020 to March 2020.

Purpose: The relationship between circulating selenium and diabetes mellitus (DM) remains inconsistent. Therefore, the relationship between circulating selenium and DM was investigated in the present study.

Patients And Methods: All participants (aged ≥18 years) were included from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2006.

Article Synopsis
  • A hybrid approach combining a tin-based solid acid catalyst (Sn-Maifanitum stone) and recombinant E. coli whole cells was created to convert biomass into furfurylamine.
  • At 170 °C for 30 minutes, 90.3 mM of furfural was produced from corncobs, which was then further transformed into furfurylamine with a yield of 74.0% in about 20.5 hours.
  • The process allows for efficient recycling of both the Sn-Maifanitum stone catalyst and the E. coli biocatalyst, facilitating sustainable production in a one-pot reaction setup.

Background: The therapeutic role of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA) in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains controversial.

Methods: We systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials investigating the use of NMBA in ARDS patients from inception to July 2019. Relative risk (RR) was calculated for the incidence of barotrauma and mortality using the random-effect or fixed-effect model according to heterogeneity analysis.

Previous studies have suggested the beneficial effects of vitamin C in patients with sepsis. However, the results could not be reproduced in the subsequent studies. This meta-analysis aimed to reevaluate the value of vitamin C treatment in patients with sepsis.

Ischemia postconditioning (PTC) can reduce myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. However, the effectiveness of PTC cardioprotection is reduced or lost in diabetes and the mechanisms are largely unclear. Hyperglycemia can induce overexpression of inducible nitric oxide synthesis (iNOS) in the myocardium of diabetic subjects.

Objectives: To determine whether or not the antioxidants N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and allopurinol (ALP) confer synergistic cardioprotection against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury by stabilizing hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α)/heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) signaling in diabetic myocardium.

Methods: Control or diabetic [streptozotocin (STZ)-induced] Sprague Dawley rats received vehicle or NAC, ALP or their combination for four weeks starting one week after STZ injection. The animals were then subjected to thirty minutes of coronary artery occlusion followed by two hours reperfusion in the absence or presence of the selective HO-1 inhibitor, tin protoporphyrin-IX (SnPP-IX) or the HIF-1α inhibitor 2-Methoxyestradiol (2ME2).

Mouse models of myocardial ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and ischemic postconditioning (IPD) have proven to be very useful models of cardiovascular diseases. In 2010, Gao described a novel procedure without the aid of mechanical ventilation. However, the technique of heart externalization could not be applied to mouse models of IPC or IPD due to the limited time frame of the technique.

An apolipoprotein A-I mimetic peptide, D-4F, has been shown to improve vasodilation and inhibit atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic low-density lipoprotein receptor-null (LDLr(-/-)) mice. To study the metabolic variations of D-4F ininhibiting atherosclerosis, metabonomics, a novel system biological strategy to investigate the pathogenesis, was developed. Female LDLr(-/-) mice were fed a Western diet and injected with or without D-4F intraperitoneally.

Objectives: Endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine is a cardiovascular risk factor that is elevated in patients with coronary artery disease. We hypothesized that novel endothelial nitric oxide synthase enhancer AVE3085 might improve the endothelial function altered by asymmetric dimethylarginine in the human internal thoracic artery.

Methods: Cumulative concentration-relaxation curves to acetylcholine (-11 to -5 log mol/L) were established in left internal thoracic artery rings (n = 65) from 27 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting in precontraction induced by U46619 (-8 log mol/L) in the absence or presence of asymmetric dimethylarginine (100 μmol/L) or AVE3085 (30 μmol/L).

Therapeutic angiogenesis remains unsuccessful in coronary artery disease. It is known that plasma endothelium-derived microparticles (EMPs) are increased in coronary artery disease and that hypercholesterolemia can inhibit angiogenesis. We evaluated the relationship between EMPs and hypercholesterolemia in the impairment of angiogenesis.

Aim: To construct and express the single chain variable fragments (scFv) gene against human CD33 antigen, and characterize its bioactivity.

Methods: The genes encoding the light and heavy chain variable regions were cloned by RT-PCR from a murine hybridoma cell line, which could produce monoclonal antibody(mAb) against human CD33 antigen. Then the light and heavy chain variable regions were fused together by a short peptide linker containing 15 amino acid (Gly(4)Ser)(3) using splice-overlap extensive PCR.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a highly infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the SARS-CoV are vital for early diagnosis and pathological studies of SARS. Direct intrasplenic inoculation of plasmid DNA encoding antigen is an effective and fast approach to generate specific mAb when the protein antigen is difficult to prepare or dangerous in use.
