Based on a single-beam injection distributed feedback semiconductor laser (DFB-SL) combining with optical heterodyne, a photonic scheme for generating dual-linear chirp microwave (dual-LCM) signal with identical or complementary chirp is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. For such a scheme, a continuous-wave (CW) light with a frequency of finj is split into two parts. One part is passing through a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) driven by a modified sawtooth signal, and then its intensity varies with time as a sawtooth wave.

Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) can be acquired by using a distributed feedback semiconductor laser (DFB-SL) operating at period-one (P1) oscillation under an optical injection modulated by a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). In this work, through introducing another MZM to establish cascade-modulated optical injection, an improved photonic scheme for generating high-quality FMCW is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The experimental results indicate that, under appropriate injection parameters, the central frequency of the generated FMCW is widely tunable, and the bandwidth is larger than that obtained under a single MZM modulation.

Based on the period-one (P1) dynamics of an optically injected semiconductor laser (SL), a photonic scheme enabling the generation of a tunable high-quality frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) signal is investigated experimentally. Under a modulated optical injection, the laser is driven into P1 oscillation with a modulated microwave frequency. In this work, optical feedback is also introduced to further reduce the microwave phase noise.

Background: Risperidone and paliperidone have been the mainstay treatment for schizophrenia and their potential role in neuroprotection could be associated with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and N400 (an event-related brain potential component). So far, different effects on both BDNF and N400 were reported in relation to various antipsychotic treatments. However, few studies have been conducted on the mechanism of risperidone and paliperidone on BDNF and N400.

Herein, we employ Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) investigations of TiO2-N719 dye interfaces. In situ electrochemical SERS investigations of the Ag@TiO2-N719 interaction are systematically carried out under a series of electrode-potential controls. By comparing the potential dependence of resonant and pre-resonant SERS spectra recorded with different laser excitations, bidentate carboxylate linkage is considered to be involved in N719 adsorption on TiO2.

Au-seed Ag-growth nanoparticles of controllable diameter (50-100 nm), and having an ultrathin SiO(2) shell of controllable thickness (2-3 nm), were prepared for shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS). Their morphological, optical, and material properties were characterized; and their potential for use as a versatile Raman signal amplifier was investigated experimentally using pyridine as a probe molecule and theoretically by the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method. We show that a SiO(2) shell as thin as 2 nm can be synthesized pinhole-free on the Ag surface of a nanoparticle, which then becomes the core.

Based on a linear chain composed of a central semiconductor laser and two outer semiconductor lasers, chaos synchronization and bidirectional communication between two outer lasers have been investigated under the case that the central laser and the two outer lasers are coupled mutually, whereas there exists no coupling between the two outer lasers. The simulation results show that high-quality and stable isochronal synchronization between the two outer lasers can be achieved, while the cross-correlation coefficients between the two outer lasers and the central laser are very low under proper operation condition. Based on the high performance chaos synchronization between the two outer lasers, message bidirectional transmissions of bit rates up to 20 Gbit/s can be realized through adopting a novel decoding scheme which is different from that based on chaos pass filtering effect.
