Sulfonated phenol-formaldehyde (SPF) resin used as a cross-linker for petroleum reservoir conformance control was synthesized under alkaline conditions. The reaction process of SPF resin was evaluated by measuring the solution's viscosity with respect to phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin. The molecular structure of SPF resin was characterized by both FTIR and HPLC-MS/MS.

Article Synopsis
  • A hydrophobically associating polymer (HAP) was used to enhance the stability and migration of phenol-formaldehyde resin (PFR) particles in simulated oilfield injection water.
  • The study found that HAP forms stable aggregates with PFR that can move through sand packs but face resistance due to their deformation at pore throats, leading to better oil recovery.
  • Increased concentrations of the PFR/HAP system improved oil recovery rates, especially in low permeability sand packs, demonstrating improved water conformance and diversion in oil extraction processes.
