The commitment and differentiation of human placental progenitor cytotrophoblast (CT) cells are crucial for a successful pregnancy, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we identified the transcription factor (TF), specificity protein 6 (SP6), as a human species-specific trophoblast lineage TF expressed in human placental CT cells. Using pluripotent stem cells as a model, we demonstrated that SP6 controls CT generation and the establishment of trophoblast stem cells (TSCs) and identified msh homeobox 2 (MSX2) as the downstream effector in these events.

Introduction: In patients undergoing cancer surgery, it is ambiguous whether propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) elicits a significantly higher overall survival rate than volatile anesthetics (VA). Consequently, evaluating the impact of TIVA and VA on long-term oncological outcomes is crucial.

Aim: This study compared TIVA versus VA for cancer surgery patients and investigated the potential correlation between anesthetics and their long-term surgical outcomes.

Fifty-two patients, aged 3 to 7 years, who underwent femoral shaft fracture reduction surgery in our hospital in 2019 were randomly divided into the experimental group (n = 26) and the control group (n = 26). Both groups were given routine propofol combined with remifentanil by intravenous anesthesia.

Introduction: Accurate and rapid assessment of the coronary microcirculation has become an important medical challenge. However, reliable and non-invasive quantitative methods to diagnose coronary microvascular disease (CMVD), select treatments for coronary artery disease (CAD), and therefore improve coronary microcirculation are lacking. Current detection methods have limitations.

Ticagrelor is the first reversibly binding oral P2Y receptor antagonist to inhibit platelet activation and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of coronary artery disease. At present, the other pharmacological functions of ticagrelor remain poorly understood. The NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome plays a critical role in the innate immune system, but its excessive activation also contributes to the pathogenesis of complex diseases.

Premature coronary artery disease (CAD) studies rarely involve coronary plaque characterization. We characterize coronary plaque tissue by radiofrequency intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in patients with premature CAD. From July 2015 to December 2017, 220 patients from the Department of Cardiology, Affiliated Hangzhou First People's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine with first occurrence of angina or myocardial infarction within 3 months were enrolled.

In auditory-conditioned fear learning, the freezing response is independent of the sound frequencies used, but the frequency of the conditioned sound is considered distinct from those of unrelated sounds based on electrophysiological responses in the auditory system. Whether an emergent discriminative learning underlies auditory fear conditioning and which nuclei and pathways are involved in it remain unclear. Using behavioral and electrophysiological assays, we found that the response of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) neurons to a conditioned auditory stimulus (CS) was enhanced relative to the response to unrelated frequencies (UFs) after auditory fear conditioning, and mice could distinguish the CS during multifrequency testing, a phenomenon called emergent discriminative learning.

We aimed to investigate the role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) FOXD3 antisense RNA 1 (FOXD3-AS1) in myocardial Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. In our study, H9C2 cells were treated with oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD/R). RT-qPCR was performed to detect the expression level of lncRNA FOXD3-AS1 in OGD/R induced H9C2 cells.

Background: Inflammation is involved in the development of In-stent restenosis (ISR) after percutaneous coronary intervention. We aimed to investigate the association between of suppressor of cytokine signaling-1 (SOCS1), a major negative regulator for inflammation, and the occurrence of ISR in Chinese patients.

Methods: We enrolled patients with coronary artery disease who underwent PCI with stenting.

Introduction: Nogo-A is an important neurite growth-regulatory protein in the adult and developing nervous system. Recently, increasing evidence has shown that Nogo-A plays important roles in cardiac development and may act as a potential indicator for heart failure. In addition, increased oxidative stress has been found in individuals with cardiovascular diseases.

Objectives: Risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) has been suggested to be associated with polymorphisms of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), while the results were controversial. We aimed to systematically assess the association between PPAR polymorphisms and CHD risk.

Methods: A case-control study with 446 subjects was conducted to evaluate the association between CHD risk and C161T polymorphism, which was of our special interest as this polymorphism showed different effects on risks of CHD and acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Traditional risk factors cannot promote prediction capacity for the patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), who usually do not show apparent symptoms until they develop acute myocardial infarction (AMI). As such, novel predictive diagnostic strategies are essential to accurately define patients at risk of acute coronary syndrome. In this study, non-targeted metabolomic profiling using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF/MS) was performed in combination with multivariate statistical model to analyze the serum samples of patients with stable angina (n=38), acute myocardial infarction (AMI) (n=34) and healthy age- and gender-matched controls (n=71).

Background: Several studies have implied that the time of radiation exposure for patients and operators during the transradial approach for coronary angiography (TRA) is associated with the use of different guidewire or catheter and operator's finesse. This study aimed to assess the effects of non-hydrophilic or hydrophilic guidewire and operator expertise on fluoroscopy time and procedure time of TRA and further effects on the procedure safety.

Methods: A total of 1035 consecutive patients undergoing TRA were recruited prospectively and respectively divided into non-hydrophilic guidewire and hydrophilic guidewire group, or well-experienced group and less-experienced group.

Background & Aims: The association between coronary heart disease (CHD) and dietary fiber intake is not consistent, especially for the subtypes of dietary fiber. The aim of our study was to conduct a meta-analysis of existing cohort published studies assessing the association between dietary fiber intake and risk of CHD, and quantitatively estimating their dose-response relationships.

Methods: We searched PubMed and EMBASE before May 2013.

The predictive value of stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) has not been established in patients with non-ST elevation acute coronary syndrome (non-STEACS). A total of 678 consecutive patients with non-STEACS and moderate to high TIMI (Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction) risk scores were recruited. All patients underwent an early invasive strategy and then were followed-up for 18 months for clinical events.

Background: Adiponectin, an adipokine facilitating insulin action, has antiatherogenic effects. This study investigated whether common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the adiponectin gene influenced plasma adiponectin level and whether they were associated with the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its angiographical severity in type 2 diabetes in Chinese population.

Methods: 11 tagging SNPs were genotyped in 1110 subjects with or without CAD in type 2 diabetes.
