Objectives: While lumbar puncture (LP) remains gold standard for assessing intracranial pressure (ICP), LP can be difficult to perform and lead to complications. Noninvasive correlations for elevated ICP via ocular ultrasound (OUS) have shown mixed results. The primary objective of this study is to identify the frequency and test characteristics of the crescent sign on OUS for elevated ICP.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aims to explore the links between the severity of sickle cell retinopathy (SCR) and various clinical and demographic factors in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD).
  • Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study on 296 SCD patients, using statistical methods to assess associations between the severity of SCR and factors like age, sex, and treatment options.
  • Findings indicated that older age, male sex, and visual symptoms were significantly associated with more severe forms of SCR, highlighting the need for better screening and potential protective effects of chronic transfusion therapy against more invasive treatments.

Purpose: To compare the identification of optic nerve head (ONH) structures in optical coherence tomography images by observers and automated algorithms.

Methods: ONH images in 24 radial scan sets by optical coherence tomography were obtained in 51 eyes of 29 glaucoma patients and suspects. Masked intraobserver and interobserver comparisons were made of marked endpoints of Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) and the anterior lamina cribrosa (LC).

As-grown randomly aligned networks of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) invariably suffer from limited transport properties due to high resistance at the crossed junctions between CNTs. In this work, Joule heating of the highly resistive CNT junctions is carried out in the presence of a spin-coated layer of a suitable chemical precursor. The heating triggers thermal decomposition of the chemical precursor, tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium (Pd2(dba)3), and causes local deposition of Pd nanoparticles at the CNT junctions, thereby improving the on/off current ratio and mobility of CNT network devices by an average factor of ∼6.

We have recently shown that a 150-bp Col10a1 distal promoter (-4296 to -4147 bp) is sufficient to direct hypertrophic chondrocyte-specific reporter (LacZ) expression in vivo. More recently, through detailed sequence analysis we identified two putative tandem-repeat Runx2 binding sites within the 3'-end of this 150-bp region (TGTGGG-TGTGGC, -4187 to -4176 bp). Candidate electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA), chromatin immunoprecipitation, and transfection studies demonstrate that these putative Runx2 sites bind Runx2 and mediate upregulated Col10a1/reporter activity in vitro.
