Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how returning straw to paddy soils affects the breakdown of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their accumulation in rice, highlighting a gap in research compared to upland soils.
  • Incubation and pot experiments revealed that the optimal straw treatment for the most effective PAH degradation and lowest PAH levels in rice was 0.8% wheat straw, while 1% straw showed significant increases in degradation and concentration effects from conventional and pretreated straw methods.
  • Findings suggest that both the amount of straw returned and its treatment method influence PAH degradation in rice fields, with higher diversity of microbes enhancing the processes for breaking down these contaminants.

The occurrence of lipotoxicity during obesity-associated cardiomyopathy is detrimental to health. Salvianolic acid A (SAA), a natural polyphenol extract of (Danshen in China), is known to be cardioprotective. However, its clinical benefits against obesity-associated cardiomyocyte injuries are unclear.

Under the action of pump light, a conventional photonic crystal can be turned into a functional photonic crystal. In the paper, we have designed an optical triode with a one-dimensional functional photonic crystal, and analyzed the effect of period number, medium thickness, refractive index, incident angle, the irradiation frequency and the intensity of the pump light on the optical triode magnification. We obtain some valuable results, which shall help to optimize the design of optical triodes.

We propose a scheme for realizing electromagnetically induced grating via the giant Kerr nonlinearity in a coherently driven four-level system with spontaneously generated coherence. In the presence of spontaneously generated coherence, Kerr nonlinearity can be enhanced with vanishing linear absorption. Thus, with a standing-wave coupling field, one can achieve a pure absorption grating, which leads the probe field to gather the zero-order direction when the detuning of the coupling field is on resonance.
