An infrared perfect absorber based on a gold nanowire metamaterial cavities array on a gold ground plane is designed. The metamaterial made of gold nanowires embedded in an alumina host exhibits an effective permittivity with strong anisotropy, which supports cavity resonant modes of both electric dipole and magnetic dipole. The impedance of the cavity modes matches the incident plane wave in free space, leading to nearly perfect light absorption.

We mainly investigate the polarization singularities of the focused azimuthally polarized (AP) beams modulated by spiral phase and sector obstacles. The results reveal that either the spiral phase or sector obstacle can convert the central V-point to C-points, C-point dipoles, or even double V-points under certain conditions. The conversion can be selectively controlled by appropriately setting the topological charge of the spiral phase and the sector angle of the obstacle.

The redistribution of transversal energy flow and polarization in the focal field are represented by obstructing an azimuthally polarized beam with rotationally symmetric sector-shaped obstacles. Several energy flow rings that can finally transport the absorptive particles into fixed locations are formed in the focal plane. Furthermore, the local polarization state of the focal field is also modified by use of the rotationally symmetric obstacles.

Adderall, consisting of a mixture of amphetamine salts and dextroamphetamine salts, is a prescription drug for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Labeled or unlabeled use of Adderall is gaining popularity among young children and college students. Although it is rare, Adderall use is associated with myocardial infarction and even sudden death.

Unlabelled: The study of FOP, a disabling genetic disorder of progressive heterotopic ossification, is hampered by the lack of readily available connective tissue progenitor cells. We isolated such cells from discarded primary teeth of patients with FOP and controls and discovered dysregulation of BMP signaling and rapid osteoblast differentiation in FOP cells compared with control cells.

Introduction: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), the most disabling condition of progressive heterotopic ossification in humans, is caused by a recurrent heterozygous missense mutation in activin receptor IA (ACVR1), a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) type I receptor, in all classically affected individuals.

Cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) have been implicated in bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-mediated morphogenesis by regulating BMP activity and gradient formation. However, the direct role of HSPGs in BMP signaling is poorly understood. Here we show that HSPGs directly regulate BMP2-mediated transdifferentiation of C2C12 myoblasts into osteoblasts.

An enriched environment is associated with hippocampal plasticity, including improved cognitive performance and increased neurogenesis. Here, we show that hippocampal expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is increased by both an enriched environment and performance in a spatial maze. Hippocampal gene transfer of VEGF in adult rats resulted in approximately 2 times more neurogenesis associated with improved cognition.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a gut peptide that, together with its receptor, GLP-1R, is expressed in the brain. Here we show that intracerebroventricular (i.c.
