Metabarcoding analysis has been demonstrated to be an effective technology for monitoring diversity and dynamics of phytoplankton including Skeletonema species. Although molecular diversity uncovered in metabarcoding projects has generally been interpreted as sum of interspecies diversity and intraspecies diversity, accumulating evidence suggests that it also harbors unprecedentedly high levels of intra-genomic variations (IGVs). As up to thousands of amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) identified in a typical metabarcoding project can be annotated to be Skeletonema species, we hypothesize that substantial portions of these ASVs are contributed by IGVs.

The application of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies has revolutionized research on phytoplankton biodiversity by generating an unprecedented amount of molecular data in marine ecosystem surveys. However, high-level of molecular diversity uncovered in HTS-based metabarcoding analyses may lead to overinterpretation of phytoplankton diversity due to excessive intra-genomic variations (IGVs). The aims in this study are to explore the nature of phytoplankton molecular diversity and to test the hypothesis.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an immune mediator associated with inflammation, which is upregulated after ischemia in brain tissue. ISO-1 is a potent inhibitor of MIF tautomerase and can protect neurons by reducing the permeability of blood brain barrier (BBB). In this study, we investigated the role of ISO-1 in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by establishing a model of middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion in rats.

It has been generally accepted that the number of oocyte pool in mammalian ovaries is limited and irreversibly consumed throughout the adulthood until menopause, which has been challenged by the existence of female germline stem cells (FGSCs) and their differentiation potentials into oocytes through mitosis. However, there have been a few reports about the existence of porcine FGSCs (pFGSCs) in the neonatal piglet ovarian tissues. In this study, the pFGSCs were isolated from the one day post partum (1 dpp) piglet ovaries by a differential anchoring velocity method combined with the magnetic cell sorting (MACS) using VASA antibody.

In this work, Ru-based RRAM devices with atomic layer deposited AlO/HfO functional layer were fabricated and studied. A negative differential resistance (NDR) behavior was observed during the voltage set process, and its physical origin was explored. Based on the physics understanding of the resistive switching, the measured NDR behavior is believed to be associated with the partially unipolar reset effect, which is due to the recombination between oxygen vacancies and the thermally released oxygen ions from the RuO interface layer.

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) has been indicated to have an important role in various types of malignant tumors; however, only a small number of lncRNAs have been entirely elucidated. In the present study, a novel lncRNA, actin filament associated protein 1 antisense RNA 1 (AFAP1-AS1), was investigated, which is highly expressed in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and hybridization were performed to detect AFAP1-AS1 expression in frozen tissues and tissue microarrays, respectively.

The advance in medical imaging and utilization has raised the concern about exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR). Cellular and molecular responses to high-dose ionizing radiation have been characterized, but in the range of low dose, these responses are poorly understood. Here, we investigate the gene expression in response to LDIR (10 cGy) in the EpiDermFT human skin model.

Introduction: The Xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD, also referred to as excision repair cross complementing gene 2, ERCC2) is one of key genes involved in nucleotide excision repair and two potentially functional polymorphisms of XPD (Asp312Asn and Lys751Gln) have been widely investigated in various cancers including prostate cancer. However, the results were conflicting rather than conclusive.

Aims: Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the associations between these two polymorphisms of XPD and the risk of prostate cancer.
