Organic selenium (Se), specifically Se-methylselenocysteine (MeSeCys), has demonstrated potential effects in human disease prevention including cancer and the emerging ameliorating effect on Alzheimer's disease. In plants, selenocysteine methyltransferase (SMT) is the key enzyme responsible for MeSeCys formation.
