Background: Marked arterioportal shunt (APS) can be a contraindication for transarterial radioembolization (TARE) because of the risk of radiation-induced liver toxicity or pneumonitis. To date, the best method to close marked APS to reduce intrahepatic shunt (IHS) and hepatopulmonary shunt (HPS) before TARE has not been elucidated.

Background: The role of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) in response assessment among patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) remains unknown. The authors studied the association of the CA 19-9 response (defined as a reduction >50% from baseline) with the radiologic response and the outcome in patients with unresectable iCCA.

Methods: A prospective cohort of 422 patients who were initially diagnosed with unresectable iCCA, had baseline CA 19-9 levels ≥100 U/mL, and received treatment with systemic therapies at the authors' institution between January 2017 and December 2021 were enrolled in this study.

The inflammation of the pancreatic islets triggers β cell dysfunction and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) onset. While dietary lycopene consumption contributes to protection against T2DM in animal studies, the potential mechanism of this compound in the regulation of islet function in T2DM remains largely unclear. In this study, by using anti-diabetic metformin as a positive control, we demonstrated that lycopene treatment suppressed islet inflammation and apoptosis in both high-fat diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice and in Min6 cells exposed to high glucose/palmitic acid (HG/PA)-RAW264.

High dietary intake of β-cryptoxanthin (BCX, an oxygenated provitamin A carotenoid) is associated with a lower risk of lung disease in smokers. BCX can be cleaved by β-carotene-15,15'-oxygenase (BCO1) and β-carotene-9',10'-oxygenase (BCO2) to produce retinol and apo-10'-carotenoids. Objectives: To propose a deep learning-based classification framework, which can carry out patient-level benign and malignant tumors classification according to the patient's multi-plane images and clinical information.

Methods: A total of 430 cases of spinal tumor, including axial and sagittal plane images by MRI, of which 297 cases for training (14072 images), and 133 cases for testing (6161 images) were included. Based on the bipartite graph and attention learning, this study proposed a multi-plane attention learning framework, BgNet, for benign and malignant tumor diagnosis.

Piecing together the history of carbon (C) perturbation events throughout Earth’s history has provided key insights into how the Earth system responds to abrupt warming.
