Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has seen a worldwide expansion in incidence in the past three decades. Tumor-derived exosomes have been associated with the metastasis of cancer cells and are present within the local hypoxic tumor microenvironment, where they mediate intercellular communication by transferring molecules including microRNAs (miRNAs) between cells. Rationale: Though the majority of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients have a good prognosis after careful and standardized therapy, approximately 13% to 15% of DTC cases show surprisingly aggressive behavior and invasion of the surrounding structures, and a few progress to unresectable diseases.
