Aims: Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune orbital disorder that diminishes the quality of life (QOL) for affected individuals. The Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO)-QOL questionnaire effectively assesses TED's impact on patients. This study aims to investigate factors influencing visual functioning (QOL-VF) and physical appearance (QOL-AP) scores in Chinese TED patients using innovative data analysis methods.

RNA modifications are crucial post-transcriptional processes that significantly influence gene expression, RNA stability, nuclear transport, and translational capacity. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is a physiological process that is dysregulated in many pathological conditions, including ocular diseases, immune disorders, and cancer. In this review, we compile the current understanding of the intricate relationship between various RNA modifications and angiogenic mechanisms, spotlighting emerging evidence that underscore their pivotal regulatory roles in both physiological and pathological angiogenesis.

This study explores the effect of the transformation of paediatric healthcare through the implementation of the Family Mutual Aid System (FMAS) for personal medical insurance accounts, among paediatric patients at a children's hospital (Hospital A in Shanghai, China). We conducted a cohort study in the endocrinology department of Hospital A from August 2021 to July 2023 to assess the impact of the FMAS enrolment on patients' annual outpatient visits, annual outpatient expenditures, and the allocation of these costs among the Basic Medical Insurance Pooling Fund and patients' out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses, with a further subdivision into online and offline consultations. Analysis employed a weighted Difference-in-Differences approach within a fixed-effects model following Propensity Score Matching.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease secondary largely to hyperthyroid Graves' disease, which profoundly affects patients' visual function, appearance, and physical and mental well-being. Emerging neuroimaging studies have reported alterations in the brains of patients with TED, suggesting that the impact of this autoimmune disease may extend beyond the orbit. This systematic review aims to consolidate the neuroimaging evidence that describes the brain alterations of TED.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify risk factors for poor prognosis in uveal melanoma among a Chinese population, focusing on the genetic markers monosomy 3, 8q gain, and EZH2 staining.
  • Examining 89 patient cases from 2012 to 2021, researchers conducted immunohistochemical analysis and evaluated survival rates using statistical methods like Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression.
  • Key findings indicated that factors such as age, tumor size, stage, and the presence of 8q gain and high EZH2 expression were linked to higher rates of distant metastasis, while monosomy 3 showed no significant association in this study.

Introduction: This study examines the impact of China's family doctor system (FDS) on healthcare utilisation and costs among diabetic patients with distinct long-term service utilisation patterns.

Methods: Conducted in City A, eastern China, this retrospective cohort study used data from the Health Information System and Health Insurance Claim Databases, covering diabetic patients from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2019.Patients were categorised into service utilisation trajectories based on quarterly outpatient visits to community health centres (CHCs) and secondary/tertiary hospitals from 2014 to 2017 using group-based trajectory models.

Background: Optic nerve imaging is crucial for diagnosing and understanding optic neuropathies because it provides detailed visualization of the nerve's structure and pathologies through advanced modalities. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis within the field of optic nerve imaging, aiming to pinpoint the latest research trends and focal points in optic nerve imaging.

Methods: The core literature on optic nerve imaging published between January 1991 and August 2023 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection.

Background: Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune orbital disease, with intravenous glucocorticoid (IVGC) therapy as the first-line treatment. Due to uncertain response rates and possible side effects, various prediction models have been developed to predict IVGC therapy outcomes.

Methods: A thorough search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases.

  • Cellular senescence is a dual-edged sword in cancer, acting as a protective barrier before cancer develops but potentially promoting tumor growth once cancer is present.
  • The paper highlights how the senescence-associated secretory phenotype contributes to the diversity of senescent cells in tumors and discusses various triggers for cellular senescence, along with emerging senolytic drugs aimed at clearing these cells.
  • Overall, the research sheds light on the complex roles of senescent cells in different cancers and offers new perspectives for developing cancer therapies.

Aim: To explore the prognostic factors for lacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (LGACC) in Chinese patients.

Methods: Clinical and histopathological data were reviewed in patients with pathologically confirmed LGACC. Local recurrence, metastasis, and disease-specific death were the main outcome measures.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoscale membrane vesicles of various sizes that can be secreted by most cells. EVs contain a diverse array of cargo, including RNAs, lipids, proteins, and other molecules with functions of intercellular communication, immune modulation, and regulation of physiological and pathological processes. The biofluids in the eye, including tears, aqueous humor, and vitreous humor, are important sources for EV-based diagnosis of ocular disease.

Aims: To investigate the alterations of the optic nerve and visual cortex in dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON), a subgroup of thyroid eye disease (TED).

Methods: Multiple orbital imaging biomarkers related to optic nerve compression and the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) of the brain were obtained from 47 patients with DON, 56 TED patients without DON (nDON), and 37 healthy controls (HC). Correlation analyses and diagnostic tests were implemented.

Conjunctival melanoma (CoM) is a potentially devastating tumor that can lead to distant metastasis. Despite various therapeutic strategies for distant metastatic CoM, the clinical outcomes remain unfavorable. Herein, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of 47,017 cells obtained from normal conjunctival samples (n = 3) and conjunctival melanomas (n = 7).

Macrophages play a pivotal role in the crosstalk between the immune and skeletal systems, while Mg-based biomaterials demonstrate immunomodulatory capabilities in this procedure. However, the mechanism of how Mg promotes osteogenesis through the interplay of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and macrophages remains undescribed. Here, we demonstrated that a Mg-cross-linked alginate hydrogel exerted a dual enhancement of BMSCs osteogenic differentiation through the ligand-receptor pairing of the OSM/miR-370-3p-gp130 axis.

Optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) are most predominant pilocytic astrocytomas, which are typically diagnosed within the first decade of life. The majority of affected children with OPGs also present with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), the most common tumor predisposition syndrome. OPGs in individuals with NF1 primarily affect the optic pathway and lead to visual disturbance.

Retinoblastoma, the primary ocular malignancy in pediatric patients, poses a substantial threat to mortality without prompt and effective management. The prognosis for survival and preservation of visual acuity hinges upon the disease severity at the time of initial diagnosis. Notably, retinoblastoma has played a crucial role in unraveling the genetic foundations of oncogenesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Constitutive activation of GNAQ/11 is the primary oncogenic event in uveal melanoma (UM), but directly targeting these genes hasn't proven feasible due to their essential cellular functions.
  • Research indicated that inhibiting EHMT2, a specific protein, significantly decreased cancer cell growth and movement, with higher levels of EHMT2 associated with worse patient outcomes in UM.
  • The study suggests that targeting both EHMT2 and GNAQ/11 pathways could provide an effective therapeutic strategy for UM by disrupting their roles in cancer progression.
