Parasitism is an important lifestyle in the genus but has not been studied in a genus-wide way toward and hosts. Our approach screened a genus-wide set of 30 species in dual culture assays with two soil-borne and three plant-parasitic species and used exo-proteomic analyses, with the aim to correlate antagonism with potential strategies for attacking and . The spp.

Article Synopsis
  • Pythium oligandrum, an oomycete, is explored as a biocontrol agent against fungal diseases like rhizome rot in ginger, known for enhancing plant growth and inducing disease resistance through auxin production and elicitors.
  • Research shows that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Pythium oligandrum significantly improve plant growth and disease resistance, especially in Nicotiana benthamiana and ginger plants.
  • Transcriptomic analysis reveals elevated levels of plant growth hormones and stress response genes in VOC-exposed ginger, indicating Pythium oligandrum's potential in boosting crop yields and fighting plant diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Pythium oligandrum, an oomycete, acts as a parasite and predator of fungi and other oomycetes, primarily using hydrolytic enzymes for attack but also produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that inhibit growth.
  • The study found that VOCs can reduce the growth of affected organisms by 80% and lower zoospore levels by 60%, with specific compounds identified as particularly effective inhibitors.
  • Further investigations revealed that exposure to VOCs causes damage at the cellular level and leads to increased production of reactive oxygen species, highlighting the importance of both hydrolytic enzymes and VOCs in Pythium oligandrum's ecological role and potential use in biocontrol strategies.

Receptor downregulation is instrumental for many therapeutic interventions. Receptor knockout through gene-editing technologies is efficient but can introduce off-target mutations and chromothripsis. Regulation of gene expression at the protein level is a promising alternative.

Moisture-enabled electricity generation as an emerging new energy-harvesting technology is one of the most fascinating and promising candidates for supplying renewable and clean power. However, existing moist-electric generators (MEGs) can only produce intermittent, brief bursts of power with voltage output less than 1 V, severely restricting their practical applications. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement for next-generation MEG devices with high efficiency and continuous energy harvesting properties.

Water-induced electricity generation as an emerging novel sustainable energy harvesting technology has become a hot research topic recently. Here, we develop a ceramic (SiO) nanofiber-based water-induced electric generator via the sol-gel electrospinning technique, followed by calcination, which exhibits superior water-induced electricity generation property with significant softness. This superior performance of the SiO nanofiber-based generator may be attributed to two aspects: the electrokinetic effect generated by water evaporation force and the ion gradient formed between the top and bottom electrodes.

We have recently noticed an accidental error in part of a figure which appeared in the above‑mentioned article. In Fig. 3A, the image for the HGC27‑pEF, 15 h panel was mistakenly replicated as the HGC27‑KD, 0 h panel in the same figure, and the AGS‑pEF, 15 h and AGS KD, 0 h panels were mistakenly switched with each other.

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) plays an important role in regulating many biological processes. Sphingosine-1-phosphate phosphatase 1 (SGPP1) can dephosphorylate S1P into sphingosine and tip the balance of sphingosine-S1P. Increased levels of sphingosine leads to a decrease in the ability of cell invasion as well as an increase in the ability of cell apoptosis.

Sevoflurane, an inhalational anesthetic, and cisplatin (DDP)-based chemotherapy have been widely used during lung cancer surgery. However, the effect of sevoflurane on the sensitivity of lung cancer cells to DDP chemotherapy remains unclear. In this study, the effects of combined treatment with sevoflurane and cisplatin on the growth and invasion of human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cell line have been investigated.

In this study, hydrogels for DNA-controlled release was prepared with konjac glucomannan (KGM), a water-soluble non-ionic polysaccharide, by means of deacetylated reaction and physically cross-linking method under mild conditions. The properties of the KGM hydrogels were analyzed by FTIR spectra and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The integrality of the released DNA was investigated by circular dichroism (CD).

In this paper, chitosan porous beads were prepared by using a phase inversion technique, and then used for the adsorption and removal of copper(II) ions. The porosity, diameter and other characteristics were characterized. With the increase of chitosan and NaOH concentration used to prepare the beads, the amount of adsorbed Cu2+ per gram of the beads decreased.
