Stroke remains a leading cause of global mortality, with neuroinflammation significantly exacerbating clinical outcomes. Microglia serve as key mediators of post-stroke neuroinflammation, though the mechanisms driving their migration to injury sites remain poorly understood. In this study, using publicly available single-cell sequencing data (GSE234052), we identified a migration-associated microglial subtype in a murine model of distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (dMCAO).

Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effects have been extensively studied in ABO perovskite manganites where the Mn-O-Mn double-exchange mechanism plays a pivotal role. However, A-site-ordered AA'BO-type quadruple perovskite oxides exhibit significantly suppressed double exchange due to their extremely small B-O-B bond angles (≈140°), hindering the realization of intrinsic CMR effects. Here, we report the design and synthesis of a novel quadruple perovskite oxide Pb(PbHg)MnO (PPHMO) characterized by an unusually increased Mn-O-Mn bond angle of up to 153°.

Sleep disorders have become one of the most prevalent neuropsychiatric disorders in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the effects of postbiotics derived from selected lactic acid bacteria on anhedonia and sleep disorders in chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced mice, as well as their potential mechanisms. Mice were orally administered normal saline, low, medium, or high doses of postbiotics for 30 days, with CRS applied from days 1 to 21.

Glandular trichomes (GTs) synthesize, store, and secrete diverse specialized metabolites that protect plants against biotic and abiotic stress. The bloom is deposited on the GTs and is perceptible on the surface of the cucumber fruit. Our previous investigation revealed the absence of bloom on the fruit surface in the loss-of-function CsMYB36 plants.

The ferroelectric domain wall, serving as the boundary between separate data carriers based on domains, has attracted widespread interest due to its distinctive physical properties. Although the domain walls in ferroelectric materials are narrower than those in magnetic materials due to their higher lattice anisotropy, they still account for a considerable proportion in ultrathin films, reducing storage efficiency to some extent. Here, ultrathin antiphase ferroelectric boundaries (APFBs) are presented and validated their feasibility as ferroelectric domain walls.

Pathological retinal neovascularization (RNV) is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide; however, its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we found that the expression of endothelial protein C receptor (Epcr) was increased during RNV, and its ligand was elevated in the serum or vitreous body of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Deleting endothelial Epcr or using an EPCR-neutralizing antibody ameliorated pathological retinal angiogenesis.

Silicosis is a pulmonary disease characterized by inflammation and progressive fibrosis. Previous studies have shown that polydatin (PD) has potential biological activity in key signaling pathways regulating inflammation and apoptosis. To investigate the effect of PD on rats with silicosis, this study used network pharmacology and molecular docking methods to determine the target of PD treatment for silicosis.

Background And Purpose: Early identification of malignant cerebral edema (MCE) in patients with acute ischemic stroke is crucial for timely interventions. We aimed to identify regions critically associated with MCE using the Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) to evaluate the association between location-specific-net water uptake (NWU) and MCE.

Materials And Methods: This multicentre, retrospective cohort study included patients with acute ischemic stroke following large anterior circulation occlusion.

The biomass-derived furan aldehydes furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) are versatile platform chemicals used to produce various value-added chemicals through further valorization processes. Selectively reducing C═O in FF and HMF molecules to form furfuryl alcohol (FAL) and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), represents an important research field in upgrading biomass-based furan compounds. Currently, the reduction of furan aldehydes to furan alcohols through chemical transformation often leads to unavoidable environmental issues and the formation of potential byproducts.

VEGF is not only the most potent angiogenic factor, but also an important neurotrophic factor. In this study, vitreous expression of six neurotrophic factors were examined in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) patients with prior anti-VEGF therapy (n = 48) or without anti-VEGF treatment (n = 41) via ELISA. Potential source, variation and impact of these factors were further investigated in a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR), as well as primary Müller cells and 661W photoreceptor cell line under hypoxic condition.

Optical skyrmions, which are topological quasi-particles with nontrivial electromagnetic textures, have garnered escalating research interest recently for their potential in diverse applications. In this paper, we present a method for generating tightly focused optical skyrmion and meron topologies formed by electric-field vectors under 4-focusing system, where both the topology types (including Néel-, Bloch-, intermediate- and anti-skyrmion/meron) and the normal direction of the two-dimensional topology projection plane can be tailored at will. By utilizing time-reversal techniques, we analytically derive the radiation pattern of a multiple concentric-ring array of dipoles (MCAD) to obtain the required illumination fields on the pupil planes of the two high numerical aperture lenses.

Article Synopsis
  • Discrimination in evaluations contributes significantly to social inequality, yet there is limited knowledge about psychological interventions to combat biased assessments.
  • A research contest tested 30 interventions aimed at reducing discrimination based on physical attractiveness, revealing two effective strategies that reduced both decision noise and bias.
  • The findings highlight the need for concrete strategies that focus on relevant criteria in decision-making and emphasize the challenge of developing scalable interventions to effectively change discriminatory behaviors across various contexts.

Study Question: Which specific groups of women would not benefit from repeated frozen embryo transfers (FETs)?

Summary Answer: Women over 45 years of age should stop treatment after three FET attempts due to the absence of further benefits, while women aged 40-45 years and those with a diminished ovarian reserve and other causes of infertility have a lower chance of improving their cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) within five FET cycles and experience fewer advantages from repeated transfers.

What Is Known Already: In real-life scenarios of ART, women who fail to achieve a live birth often choose to undergo repeated FETs via the freeze-all strategy.

Study Design Size Duration: This retrospective study included 43 972 women who underwent 86 496 oocyte retrieval cycles and 82 022 FET cycles between January 2010 and March 2023 under the freeze-all strategy.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and oxidative stress have been involved in the occurrence of neuronal apoptosis in ischemic retinopathy. Pigment epitheliu-derived factor (PEDF) is well known for its multifunctional properties, including neuroprotection, anti-inflammation and antioxidant. However, the association between PEDF and ER stress or oxidative stress in ischemic retinopathy remain incompletely understood.

  • Probiotics and synbiotics can counteract the harmful effects of antibiotics given early in life, as shown in a study with mice.
  • Mice treated with the antibiotic ceftriaxone experienced negative health impacts, including weight loss and reduced diversity of gut bacteria, leading to increased harmful bacteria.
  • Supplementing with Bifidobacterium longum ssp. infantis 79 (B79) and 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) helped restore gut health and immune function, with benefits lasting into adulthood.

High-performance sensors capable of detecting multidirectional strains are indispensable to understand the complex motions involved in flexible electronics. Conventional isotropic strain sensors can only measure uniaxial deformations or single stimuli, hindering their practical application fields. The answer to such challenge resides in the construction of engineered anisotropic sensing structures.
