Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial gene expression is a vital and organized process that includes the replication of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the processing of mitochondrial RNA (mtRNA) within specific cellular structures.
  • Recent research using super-resolution microscopy shows that immunogenic mitochondrial double-stranded RNA (mt-dsRNA) accumulates in mitochondrial RNA granules during cell proliferation, indicating a potential role in cancer cell growth.
  • The presence and abundance of mt-dsRNA are influenced by mitochondrial ribonucleotide supply, suggesting a connection between mitochondrial functions and cell proliferation in cancer.

Introduction: Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been extensively studied for mutations leading to drug resistance. Pyrazinamide is a drug acting on the semi-dormant bacteria that is responsible for relapse of tuberculosis. This drug helped reduce the treatment duration of tuberculosis from nine to six months.

The treatment of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) can be challenging due to bacterial resistance, particularly from strains like MRSA and biofilm formation. However, combining conventional antibiotics with natural products shows promise in treating SSTIs. The objective of this study is to develop a nanoemulsion-based hydrogel containing extract and mupirocin and evaluate its potential for the treatment of SSTIs.

Immune response to biomaterials, which is intimately related to their surface properties, can produce chronic inflammation and fibrosis, leading to implant failure. This study investigated the development of magnetic nanoparticles coated with silica and incorporating the anti-inflammatory drug naproxen, aimed at multifunctional biomedical applications. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using various techniques that confirmed the presence of magnetite and the formation of a silica-rich bioactive glass (BG) layer.

Consumer demand for natural and healthier products has led to an increasing interest in the bioactive and therapeutic properties of plant extracts. In this study, we evaluated the phenolic compounds profile, bioactivities, and toxicities of plant extracts from eight European flora species, including L., (L.

Replication of the mitochondrial genome and expression of the genes it encodes both depend on a sufficient supply of nucleotides to mitochondria. Accordingly, dysregulated nucleotide metabolism not only destabilises the mitochondrial genome, but also affects its transcription. Here, we report that a mitochondrial nucleoside diphosphate kinase, NME6, supplies mitochondria with pyrimidine ribonucleotides that are necessary for the transcription of mitochondrial genes.

Paratanaisia bragai is a digenetic trematode that reaches sexual maturity in the kidney collecting ducts of domestic and wild birds, while the snails Subulina octona and Leptinaria unilamellata serve as its intermediate hosts in Brazil. The present study analyzed the morphology and morphometry of P. bragai.

L. is a species commonly grown in regions of the Northern Hemisphere, and is a good candidate to be cultivated in marginal lands. Plants coming from a pruning performed in a natural population located in Spain were used to assess the yield and quality of different products obtained following the cascade principle.

(1) Background: This study investigated the effects of two 6-week whole-body vibration exercise (WBVE) protocols on body composition in patients with metabolic syndrome (MSy). Thirty-three patients were allocated to either the Fixed Frequency WBVE Group (FFG-WBVE) or the Variable Frequency WBVE Group (VFG-WBVE). (2) Methods: A side-alternating vibration platform was used and the patients remained in the semi-squat position on this platform.

Background: The purpose of the current study was to assess whether embryonic culture conditions has an impact on embryo ploidy in a preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) cycle.

Methods: In this retrospective single center cohort study, a total of 1099 blastocysts from 278 PGT-A cycles were analyzed. The generated blastocysts were biopsied on days 5 and 6.

Unlabelled: To evaluate the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIT) on the cardiorespiratory performance and substrate oxidation pattern in insulin-resistant and insulin-sensitive obese adolescents.

Methods: We recruited 25 obese adolescents in three schools, and trained them in six HIT sessions, comprising of six series at 100% and recovery at 50% peak velocity (Vpeak). For the evaluation, the participants were divided into two groups: insulin-resistant (IR, n = 12; HOMA index ≥3.

Atomically precise gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are an emerging class of quantum-sized nanomaterials with well-defined molecular structures and unique biophysical properties, rendering them highly attractive for biological applications. We set out to study the impact of different ligand shells of atomically similar nanoclusters on cellular recognition and response. To understand the effects of atomically precise nanoclusters with identical composition on cells, we selected two different water-soluble gold nanoclusters protected with captopril (Capt) and glutathione (GSH): Au(Capt) (CNC) and Au(GSH) (GNC), respectively.

Background: Overweight and obesity are conditions associated with sedentary lifestyle and accumulation of abdominal fat, determining increased mortality, favoring chronic diseases, and increasing cardiovascular risk. Although the evaluation of body composition and fat distribution are highly relevant, the high cost of the gold standard techniques limits their wide utilization. Therefore, the aim of this work was to explore the relationships between simple anthropometric measures and BIA variables using multivariate linear regression models to estimate body composition and fat distribution in adults.

Article Synopsis
  • The human mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) operates differently from nuclear transcription, producing its own tRNAs, rRNAs, and mRNAs for specific mitochondrial proteins.
  • Mitochondrial RNA Granules (MRGs) are specialized, membraneless compartments that organize RNA and associated proteins, playing a key role in RNA processing and gene expression.
  • Disruptions in mitochondrial functions can lead to issues with RNA processing and granule accumulation, highlighting the crucial relationship between mitochondrial health and effective genome expression.

With the control of vectorial transmission of Chagas disease caused by metacyclic trypomastigotes (MT) in endemic countries, other pathways of infection have become important. The infection caused by blood trypomastigotes (BT) is relevant in places where the blood transfusion and organ transplantation are poorly controlled. This study aimed to evaluate immunopathogenic parameters in the colon during the acute and chronic phases of experimental infection in Swiss mice infected with BT or MT forms of VL-10 strain of Trypanosoma cruzi.
