Background: Congenital muscular dystrophies (CMDs) and myopathies (CMYOs) are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of neuromuscular disorders that share common features, such as muscle weakness, hypotonia, characteristic changes on muscle biopsy and motor retardation. In this study, we recruited eleven families with early-onset neuromuscular disorders in China, aimed to clarify the underlying genetic etiology.

Methods: Essential clinical tests, such as biomedical examination, electromyography and muscle biopsy, were applied to evaluate patient phenotypes.

Background: We performed a prespecified subgroup analysis of the CATIS-2 trial (China Antihypertensive Trial in Acute Ischemic Stroke II) to compare the effect of early versus delayed antihypertensive treatment on death and disability in patients with and without medical history of hypertension.

Methods: CATIS-2 is a multicenter randomized clinical trial conducted in 106 hospitals in China. The trial randomized 4810 patients with acute ischemic stroke within 24 to 48 hours of symptom onset and elevated systolic blood pressure between 140 and <220 mm Hg to receive antihypertensive treatment immediately after randomization or to discontinue antihypertensive medications for 7 days and then receive treatment on day 8.

Although Pb-based metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have excellent photoelectric characteristics, their toxicity remains a limiting factor for their widespread application. In the paper, a series of CsCuClxBr3-x (x = 1, 2, 3) MHP microcrystals were developed and their hydrogen evolution performance in ethanol and HX (X = Cl, Br) was also studied. Among them, CsCuCl3 microcrystals exhibit high hydrogen evolution performance in both HX and ethanol, attributed to their longest average lifetime and suitable band structure.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to establish quality-adjusted life expectancy (QALE) norms for the Chinese population using health utility values from the EQ-5D-5L and SF-6Dv2 instruments.
  • By combining these health utility norms with the latest Chinese National Life Tables, researchers calculated QALE estimates based on factors like age, sex, and urban/rural residence, applying various discount rates.
  • Results revealed that QALE at birth differed between females and males, with rural populations generally showing lower QALE compared to urban ones, highlighting the importance of these norms for healthcare decision-making.

Developing stimulus-responsive properties of drug delivery nanocarriers combined with enhanced joint lubrication is an effective synergistic strategy for treating osteoarthritis. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) is a typical thermo-responsive polymer, which can achieve drug delivery by transition from swollen state to collapsed state. However, undesired transition temperature, limited drug loading capacity, and weakened mechanical properties in joint present obstacles to use as drug delivery nanocarriers.

Capture of trace benzene is an important and challenging task. Metal-organic framework materials are promising sorbents for a variety of gases, but their limited capacity towards benzene at low concentration remains unresolved. Here we report the adsorption of trace benzene by decorating a structural defect in MIL-125-defect with single-atom metal centres to afford MIL-125-X (X = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn; MIL-125, TiO(OH)(BDC) where HBDC is 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different niobium oxynitride anions (NbNO) interact with nitrogen (N) to understand nitrogen activation under mild conditions, which is crucial for developing efficient catalysts for nitrogen fixation.
  • It was observed that the rate at which NbNO reacts with N decreases initially and then increases, particularly at a specific composition (x=5), indicating complex changes in reactivity linked to electron behavior.
  • The findings highlight that the N/O ratio significantly influences electron density and charge on the niobium sites, affecting their ability to bind nitrogen, thereby providing insights for improving catalytic processes.

The existing electronic waste (e-waste) and leaching solutions generated by industries accumulate significant amounts of gold (Au), even in excess of those in natural minerals. Therefore, the recycling of Au is extremely significant for the potential sustainability of chemical industry. By designing ionic covalent organic frameworks (COFs), here we synthesize a series of Ionic-COF-X (X=Cl, Br, AcO, and SO ) by anion regulation strategy and further explore their adsorption performance towards Au recovery.

  • Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC) is a genetic neurological disorder with no current effective treatment, linked to mutations in the SLC20A2 gene.
  • Researchers identified five new genetic variants in the SLC20A2 gene that disrupt normal splicing of its pre-mRNA, leading to dysfunctional protein production.
  • The use of splice-switching antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) not only helped restore functional SLC20A2 expression in affected cells but also showed promise in reducing brain calcification and controlling phosphorus levels in animal models, highlighting a potential therapeutic approach for PFBC.

With the development of miniaturized devices, there is an increasing demand for 2D multifunctional materials. Six ferroelastic semiconductors, YSe (, = I, Br, Cl, or F; ≠ ) monolayers, are theoretically predicted here. Their in-plane anisotropic band structure, elastic and piezoelectric properties can be switched by ferroelastic strain.

Introduction: Dyslipidemia is one of the main risk factors of chronic metabolic diseases. Our previous studies have shown that washed microbiota transplantation (WMT) has a significant improvement effect on patients with hyperlipidemia and hypolipemia in the Chinese population. The purpose of this study was to further explore the long-term efficacy and safety of WMT in patients with hyperlipidemia.

How to achieve CO electroreduction in high efficiency is a current challenge with the mechanism not well understood yet. The metal-organic cages with multiple metal sites, tunable active centers, and well-defined microenvironments may provide a promising catalyst model. Here, we report self-assembly of AgL type cuboctahedral cages from coordination dynamic Ag ion and triangular imidazolyl ligand 1,3,5-tris(1-benzylbenzimidazol-2-yl) benzene (Ag-MOC-X, X=NO, ClO, BF) via anion template effect.

  • - Fruquintinib is a treatment approved in China for metastatic colorectal cancer patients who have progressed after two rounds of chemotherapy, and a postmarketing study assessed its safety among these and other patients with solid tumors.
  • - The study included 3005 patients who started treatment between April 2019 and September 2022, with a median age of 60, finding that most began with a 5 mg dose and had a median treatment duration of 2.7 months.
  • - Results showed that 20.8% of patients had treatment-related side effects that required dose adjustments, while 15.6% had to stop treatment; however, the overall safety profile was similar to clinical trials and was considered manageable for

Context: A first-principles approach based on density functional theory was used to explore the effect of bending deformation on the electrical structure of molybdenum ditelluride doped with nonmetallic atoms X (X = B, C, N, and O). The study included alternate doping of nonmetallic atoms, as well as a comparison of the effects of intrinsic bending deformation and nonmetallic doping deformation. The results demonstrate that boron atom doping raises the Fermi energy level.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found a way to make it easier to break down harmful chemicals using special materials called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by changing their structure with different groups.
  • They created three types of MOFs with different parts added to a main ingredient and studied how these changes affected their ability to break down pollutants.
  • One type, (Fe/Co)-NHBDC, worked the best because it was better at absorbing light and moving electrons, which helps break down the pollutants more effectively.
