Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on 83 patients who underwent Bryan cervical disc replacement (CDR) to assess long-term outcomes and the impact of the center of rotation (COR) changes on facet joint degeneration.
  • Results showed significant clinical improvements and preserved range of motion; however, over half of the patients experienced deterioration in facet joint degeneration.
  • A strong correlation was found between changes in COR (specifically along the x-axis) and increased facet joint degeneration, indicating that deviations in COR could be a key factor in long-term joint health post-surgery.

Although our understanding of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) biology has been considerably enhanced, developing therapeutic strategies to eliminate HSV-1 in latently infected individuals remains a public health concern. Current antiviral drugs used for the treatment of HSV-1 complications are not specific and do not address latent infection. We recently developed a CRISPR-Cas9-based gene editing platform to specifically target the HSV-1 genome.

Conservation enforcement is a direct strategy to combat illegal wildlife trade in open markets. Yet, its large-scale effectiveness has not been widely assessed due to the lack of extensive market data. Between August 2016 and June 2017, a national coordinated enforcement campaign led by the leading Chinese authority to combat illegal migratory bird trade coincided with the largest-ever pet bird market survey across China by voluntary birdwatchers before and after the enforcement, which served as a unique natural experiment.

Background: Treatment of acute stroke, before a distinction can be made between ischemic and hemorrhagic types, is challenging. Whether very early blood-pressure control in the ambulance improves outcomes among patients with undifferentiated acute stroke is uncertain.

Methods: We randomly assigned patients with suspected acute stroke that caused a motor deficit and with elevated systolic blood pressure (≥150 mm Hg), who were assessed in the ambulance within 2 hours after the onset of symptoms, to receive immediate treatment to lower the systolic blood pressure (target range, 130 to 140 mm Hg) (intervention group) or usual blood-pressure management (usual-care group).

  • Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is being studied as a potential biomarker to predict the risk of relapse and monitor treatment effects in lung cancer patients after surgery.
  • In a study with 58 patients, ctDNA was detected in about 31% of cases post-surgery and was linked to higher tumor stages and specific gene mutations.
  • The presence of ctDNA after surgery indicated shorter disease-free survival, suggesting that monitoring ctDNA can help tailor adjuvant therapy and improve outcomes for patients.

Tuning phase transition temperature is one of the central issues in phase transition materials. Herein, we report a case study of using enantiomer fraction engineering as a promising strategy to tune the Curie temperature (T) and related properties of ferroelectrics. A series of metal-halide perovskite ferroelectrics (S-3AMP)(R-3AMP)PbBr was synthesized where 3AMP is the 3-(aminomethyl)piperidine divalent cation and enantiomer fraction x varies between 0 and 1 (0 and 1 = enantiomers; 0.

Background: Intracellular Ca cycling determines myocardial contraction and relaxation in response to physiological demands. SERCA2a (sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca-ATPase 2a) is responsible for the sequestration of cytosolic Ca into intracellular stores during cardiac relaxation, and its activity is reversibly inhibited by PLN (phospholamban). However, the regulatory hierarchy of SERCA2a activity remains unclear.

Background: Findings from observational studies suggest that dietary patterns may offer protective benefits against cognitive decline, but data from clinical trials are limited. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, known as the MIND diet, is a hybrid of the Mediterranean diet and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, with modifications to include foods that have been putatively associated with a decreased risk of dementia.

Methods: We performed a two-site, randomized, controlled trial involving older adults without cognitive impairment but with a family history of dementia, a body-mass index (the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters) greater than 25, and a suboptimal diet, as determined by means of a 14-item questionnaire, to test the cognitive effects of the MIND diet with mild caloric restriction as compared with a control diet with mild caloric restriction.

Canagliflozin (CFZ) was a commercially new class of anti-diabetic drug, which had various anhydrate crystal forms and two hydrate crystal forms (Canagliflozin hemihydrate (Hemi-CFZ) and Canagliflozin monohydrate (Mono-CFZ) crystal form). Commercially available CFZ tablets' active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) was Hemi-CFZ, which was easy conversion to CFZ or Mono-CFZ under the influence of temperature, pressure, humidity and other factors in tablets processing, storage, and transportation, thus affected bioavailability and efficacy of tablets. Therefore, quantitative analysis low content of CFZ and Mono-CFZ in tablets was essential to control tablets' quality.

Nowadays, the emission source and formation mechanism of fine particulate nitrate (pNO) in China are mired in controversy. In this study, the stable nitrogen isotope (δN-NO) and triple oxygen isotope (ΔO-NO) were determined for the pNO samples collected at three heights under different atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) (O = O + NO: 107 ± 29 μg m at ground, 102 ± 28 μg m at 118 m, 122 ± 23 μg m at 488 m) conditions during the sampling period based on the Canton Tower, Guangzhou, China. The Bayesian mixing model showed that coal combustion was the largest contributor to pNO in this city, followed by biomass burning, vehicle exhaust, and soil emission.
