To improve the biomass and lipid productivity of the microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa-15, the carbon and nitrogen sources were screened to culture it heterotrophically. The best carbon and nitrogen sources were glucose and soy peptone, respectively. The carbon and nitrogen concentrations were optimized with the help of response surface design.

Objective: The imbalance between extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis and degradation induces the excessive ECM deposition and thus renal fibrosis. The decoction (A&A) which is a combination of two Chinese herbs, Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus and Angelica sinensis, has been shown to alleviate ECM production in animal models of chronic kidney diseases.

The amount of leachate generation rate in MSW landfills is often underestimated during design phase in China. A water balance model of a valley landfill, whose size is 400 m long, 500 m wide and 50 m thick, is created to investigate the influences of initial moisture content of waste on source and production of leachate. The 50 m thick waste mass is assumed to be 5 layers.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the impact of a Chinese herbal treatment called gold belt (GB) on behavioral changes and specific brain factors in rats with spinal cord injuries (SCI).
  • Adult male rats were divided into three groups: a sham group, a SCI group, and a GB treatment group, with motor function assessed and spinal cord tissues analyzed after treatment.
  • Results showed that GB treatment significantly improved motor function, increased the number of BDNF positive neurons, and reduced NMDA receptor levels, indicating its potential role in enhancing recovery and neuroplasticity after spinal cord injury.

In order to understand atmospheric deposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons impact on ecological environment of Dashiwei Karst Tiankeng Group in Leye County, Guangxi (National Geological Park), the dry and wet deposition samples around Dashiwei Tiankeng were collected by season for a year, and were analyzed utilizing GC-MS for 16 EPA PAHs. The results showed that PAH depositional fluxes ranged from 132.36-1 655.

Objective: Cytokines such as VEGF and IGF play an important role in maintaining the function of blood vascular endothelium. And Akt1 is an important molecule in the intra-cellular signaling transduction. This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanism of Shugan Yiyang (SGYY) capsule in the treatment of arteriogenic erectile dysfunction (AED) by detecting the expressions and phosphorylation of VEGF, IGF and Akt1 in AED rats.

Previous studies showed that setting aerobic and anaerobic paragraph segments in the subsurface constructed wetlands (SFCWs) can improve the COD, NH4(+)-N, and TN removal rate, whereas the oxygen enrichment environment which produced by the artificial aeration could restrain the NO3(-)-N and NO2(-)-N removal process, and to a certain extent, inhibit the denitrification in SFCWs Therefore, in this research the structure and technology of SFCW with aerobic and anaerobic paragraph segments were optimized, by using the multi-point water inflow and setting the corresponding section for the extra pollutant removal. Results showed that with the hydraulic load of 0.06 m3 x (m2 x d)(-1), the COD, NH4(+)-N and TN removal efficiencies in the optimized SFCW achieved 91.

On the basis of site investigation and data collection of a certain hazardous waste landfill, the groundwater flow and solute transport coupled models were established by applying Visual Modflow software, which was used to conduct a numerical simulation that forecast the transport process of Cr6+ in groundwater and the effects of three control measures (ground-harden, leakage-proof barriers and drainage ditches) of contaminants transport after leachate leakage happened in impermeable layer of the landfill. The results show that the contamination plume of Cr6+ transports with groundwater flow direction, the contamination rang would reach the pool's boundary in 10 years, and the distance of contamination transport is 1 450 m. But the diffusion range of contamination plume would not be obviously expanded between 10 and 20 years.

A 2-year (2009 and 2010) field experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of irrigation amount (300, 375, and 450 mm) and irrigation frequency (once every 3-, 7-, and 10 days) on the soil water distribution and cotton water use efficiency (WUE) under mulched drip irrigation in North Xinjiang. When the irrigation amount was 375 mm, irrigation once every 3 days induced a higher water content in surface soil (0-20 cm) in the whole growth season of cotton but made the deeper (below 40 cm) soil not moistened enough. Irrigation once every 10 days benefited the irrigation water penetrated downward or sideways and made the deeper soil have a higher water content; however, this drip irrigation did not replenish water in time, and made the surface soil water content lower.
