The size at which a certain fraction of a fish population reaches sexual maturity is an important parameter of life history. The estimation of this parameter based on logistic or sigmoid models could provide different ogives and values of length at maturity, which must be analyzed and considered as a basic feature of biological reproduction for the species. A total of 305 individuals of () were obtained from artisanal fisheries in the Bahía de La Paz, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • - The age and growth rate of the giant electric ray were analyzed through growth bands in the vertebrae of 245 specimens, revealing differences in size and age between sexes, and suggesting that band pairs form annually, probably in April.
  • - Multiple models, including the von Bertalanffy growth function, were used to analyze age data from female specimens, indicating an average size of 81.87 cm total length and a growth rate of 0.17 years.
  • - The study concluded that the giant electric ray is of moderate size and longevity, and is classified as a fast-growing elasmobranch species, with age estimation supported by biological indicators like birth date and growth band formation.

This study found that the reef stingray Urobatis concentricus presents a matrotrophic aplacental viviparous reproduction with yolk sac and trophonemata formation. Growth of ovarian follicles occurs asynchronously and continuously with fecundity of three embryos per female. A maximum size of 58·4 cm total length and 37·6 cm disc width was recorded, corresponding to a mature female of 3 or 4 years of age.
