The "technological singularity" is defined as that putative point in time forecasted to occur in the mid twenty-first century when machines will become smarter than humans, leading humans and machines to merge. It is hypothesized that this event will have a profound influence on medicine and population health. This work describes a new course on Technology and the Future of Medicine developed by a diverse, multi-disciplinary group of faculty members at a Canadian university.

The locus coding for the 3Nba dioxygenase (designated mnb, for m-nitrobenzoate) was mobilized from strain JS46 using a plasmid capture method, cloned, and sequenced.

Linear multiple regression (LMR) models were developed to predict the survival rate of this genetically engineered microorganism (GEM) as a function of soil parameters measured at the time of microcosm inoculation. LMR models were tested by comparing their predicted survival rates with observed survival rates from environmental introductions of the GEM by Gagliardi et al.

These naturally formed organic acids are readily degraded by bacteria and fungi; nevertheless, many of the mechanisms involved are still unknown. We report the localization, cloning, and sequencing of genes for abietane degradation (9.

A locus harbouring genes from C. testosteroni BR6020 was cloned, dubbed pmd, which encodes the enzymes that degrade Pca.

The cbaABC gene product CbaABC converts 3CBA to protocatechuate (PCA) and 5-Cl-PCA, which are then metabolized by the chromosomal PCA meta (extradiol) ring fission pathway.

Parallel field and microcosm releases at four sites in 1996 were repeated with addition of one site in 1997. Microcosms were obtained fresh and maintained at 60% soil water holding capacity in a growth chamber at 70% relative humidity, a 12-hour photoperiod, and constant temperature.

Objective: To examine the relationship between vascular risk factors and a novel extent score for CAD that measures the percentage of the coronary tree involved with atheromatous plaque, as judged by coronary angiography.
Methods: We assessed the extent and severity of CAD and the presence of vascular risk factors of 429 consecutive eligible patients (296 men, aged 61 +/- 11 years) who presented for elective coronary angiography.
The frequency of isolation of three nonhomologous chlorobenzoate catabolic genotypes (clc, cba, and fcb) was determined for 464 isolates from freshwater sediments and groundwater in the vicinity of the Hyde Park industrial landfill site in the Niagara watershed. Samples were collected from both contaminated and noncontaminated sites during spring, summer, and fall and enriched at 4, 22, or 32 degrees C with micromolar to millimolar concentrations of chlorobenzoates and 3-chlorobiphenyl (M. In this prospective study, the 24-h blood-pressure profile of 12 patients with type 2 diabetes was monitored before, at 6, and at 12 weeks after initiation of insulin therapy, to determine whether commencement of insulin therapy increases blood pressure in these patients. Insulin dosage adjustment was carried out by using a predetermined algorithm according to body weight and degree of hyperglycemia. The mean insulin dosage at 12 weeks was 72.

IS1071 is a class II transposable element carrying a tnpA gene related to the transposase genes of the Tn3 family. Copies of IS1071 that are conserved with more than 99% nucleotide sequence identity have been found as direct repeats flanking a remarkable variety of catabolic gene sequences worldwide. The sequences of chlorobenzoate catabolic transposons found on pBRC60 (Tn5271) in Niagara Falls, N.

The functional significance of the deduced open reading frame was evaluated by deletion of an internal BstEII restriction site in cbaC and by the creation of nested deletions using exonuclease III. Expression studies were carried out with Alcaligenes sp.

The ecological impact of gene transfer events depends on the new genetic material being expressed in recipient organisms, and on natural selection processes operating on these recipients. The phylogenetic distribution of cbaAB genes for chlorobenzoate 3,4-(4,5)-dioxygenase, which are carried within Tn5271 on the IncP beta plasmid pBRC60, was investigated using isolates from freshwater microcosms and from the Niagara River watershed.

The function of the two sequenced open reading frames was evaluated by mutagenesis and expression in vivo to show that the cbaA and cbaB genes code for dioxygenase and reductase proteins, respectively. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequences of the cbaAB genes with sequences for other oxygenases revealed a clearly defined lineage among the class IA oxygenases that shows several unique features.

After a 4-week run-in period on the same beta-blocker plus placebo (as a substitute for the other agents in the regimen), felodipine was added and its dose titrated to achieve a supine diastolic blood pressure or less than 90 mm Hg. This was followed by a 12-week maintenance phase in all patients, and 47 patients entered an optional long-term follow-up for an additional 9 months.
