Accuracy of fine-needle aspiration biopsy in diagnosis of palpable breast masses: two-year results of a university-affiliated community hospital.

Human herpesvirus 7 is a constitutive inhabitant of adult human saliva.

We report the frequent isolation of human herpesvirus 7 from the saliva of healthy adults. Virus isolates recovered from different individuals exhibited minimal restriction enzyme polymorphism, which was mostly confined to heterogeneous (het) sequences in the genome. DNAs of isolates recovered from the same individual over a period of several months showed the same characteristic het fragments, indicating the stability of the het sequences upon virus replication and shedding in vivo.

HHV-6 and HHV-7 as exogenous agents in human lymphocytes.

Human herpesviruses 6 and 7 (HHV-6 and HHV-7), the newly recognized lymphotropic members of the herpesvirus family, were isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of healthy individuals. HHV-7 was recovered from PBMC after exposing the cells to conditions leading to T cell activation. No virus could be recovered from quiescent non-activated cultures, suggesting that the virus resided latently in these cells and that it could be induced from latency by T cell activation.

Human herpesvirus 7: antigenic properties and prevalence in children and adults.

The recent isolation of human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) from activated CD4+ T lymphocytes of a healthy individual raises questions regarding the prevalence of this virus in humans and its immunological relationship to previously characterized human herpesviruses. We report that HHV-7 is a ubiquitous virus which is immunologically distinct from the highly prevalent T-lymphotropic HHV-6. Thus, (i) only two of six monoclonal antibodies to HHV-6 cross-reacted with HHV-7-infected cells, (ii) Western immunoblot analyses of viral proteins revealed different patterns for HHV-6- and HHV-7-infected cells, (iii) tests of sequential serum samples from children revealed seroconversion to HHV-6 without concomitant seroconversion to HHV-7, and (iv) in some instances HHV-7 infection occurred in the presence of high titers of HHV-6 antibodies, suggesting the lack of apparent protection of children seropositive for HHV-6 against subsequent infection with HHV-7.

2-amino-3-(methylamino)-propanoic acid (BMAA) pharmacokinetics and blood-brain barrier permeability in the rat.

2-Amino-3-(methylamino)-propanoic acid (BMAA) is a neurotoxic, excitatory amino acid which has been linked through cycad use and consumption with the onset of a variant of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis occurring with high incidence in the western Pacific region. We have studied BMAA pharmacokinetics, oral bioavailability and blood-brain barrier permeability in the rat in an attempt to better define the possible role for BMAA in this disease. To evaluate its kinetics and uptake, BMAA (25-400 mg/kg) was administered to rats, either acutely or chronically, and then plasma and brain concentrations were determined at various times thereafter by combined gas chromatography mass spectrometry.

Differentiation between two distinct classes of viruses now classified as human herpesvirus 6.

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) causes exanthem subitum (ES, roseola infantum), a childhood disease characterized by high fever and skin rash. We have analyzed restriction enzyme cleavage patterns of the DNAs of ES virus isolates from Japan and the United States. The patterns of all the ES viral DNAs were highly conserved, except for variable sequences within the terminal repeat sequences.

Olfactory bulb DA receptors may be located on terminals of the olfactory nerve.

The glomerular layer of the olfactory bulb contains a substantial population of dopaminergic neurons. We determined the quantity and location of D1 and D2 dopamine receptors which are the presumed targets of these neurons. Binding of the D1 selective ligand [3H]SCH23390 was slightly above background and was distributed through all layers of the bulb except the olfactory nerve layer.

Sensitization of rotation behavior in rats with unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine or kainic acid-induced striatal lesions.

Following unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions of the substantia nigra or unilateral kainic acid (KA) lesions of the striatum rats displayed rotation behavior in response to apomorphine (0.25 mg/kg SC or 1 mg/kg SC for the 6-OHDA- and KA-lesioned rats respectively). Three to five days following the initial apomorphine challenge rats were challenged under identical conditions with the same dose of apomorphine received previously.

Variations in the replication and antigenic properties of human herpesvirus 6 strains.

The Z29 and U1102 strains of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) were compared for their ability to replicate in fresh peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) and in continuous T cell lines. The replication of both strains in PBL was enhanced by mitogenic activation of cell growth. U1102 replicated in the continuous T cell lines, J JHAN and HSB-2, whereas no Z29 replication was observed in these cell lines as judged by infectious virus yields, the presence of viral antigens, and viral DNA replication.

Isolation of a new herpesvirus from human CD4+ T cells.

A new human herpesvirus has been isolated from CD4+ T cells purified from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of a healthy individual (RK), following incubation of the cells under conditions promoting T-cell activation. The virus could not be recovered from nonactivated cells. Cultures of lymphocytes infected with the RK virus exhibited a cytopathic effect, and electron microscopic analyses revealed a characteristic herpesvirus structure.

Effects of Sampling Procedures on Salmonella Recovery from Fresh Water Catfish.

To determine the effectiveness of different sampling procedures, 200 frozen catfish known to be contaminated with Salmonella were divided into 350 samples. Variables in sampling included anterior and posterior portions of fish, blending, immersion, swabbing, rinsing and incubation at elevated temperatures. The composite of blended anterior and posterior samples incubated at 43 C and immersion of whole fish incubated at 35 C showed the highest number of positive samples, 50% and 42%, respectively.

Necrolytic migratory erythema without glucagonoma.

Two patients with clinical and histologic findings consistent with necrolytic migratory erythema are presented. Unlike previously described patients with this disorder, neither patient had substantially elevated glucagon levels nor an associated pancreatic islet cell tumor. The cause of the skin disease in these patients remains unknown but may be related to the underlying small-bowel disorder present in both.

Edwardsiella tarda in freshwater catfish and their environment.

Edwardsiella tarda was isolated from 47, 88, and 79% of skin, visceral, and dressed-fish samples, respectively. This species was also isolated from 30% of imported dressed fish, 75% of catfish pond water samples, 64% of catfish pond mud samples, and 100% of frogs, turtles, and crayfish from catfish ponds. The incidence of Edwardsiella increased during the summer months, as water temperatures increased.

Complement consumption in acute disseminated intravascular coagulation without antecedent immunopathology.

Changes in spores of Clostridium bifermentans caused by treatment with hydrogen peroxide and cations.

Spores of Clostridium bifermentans were treated with hydrogen peroxide until their peripheries had lost refractility. The centres of such spores only retained refractility at acid pH. Adding monovalent cations or increasing the pH caused the treated spores to lose their remaining refractility and decreased the turbidity of spore suspensions.

The effect of chlorine on spores of Clostridium bifermentans, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus.

The effect of chlorine on the germination, outgrowth, colony formation and structure of spores of Clostridium bifermentans, Bacillus subtilis var. niger and Bacillus cereus was examined. Chlorine decreased heat resistance and slowed or prevented germination and swelling, but spores that did swell were usualy able to elongate to form vegetative cells.
