Phenotypic and genetic characterization of NAD-dependent Pasteurellaceae from the respiratory tract of pigs and their possible pathogenetic importance.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent Pasteurellaceae other than Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Haemophilus parasuis are frequently isolated from the respiratory tract of pigs. The taxonomic classification and relevance for pathogenicity of these bacteria deserves further attention. In the present study, 107 of these NAD-dependent isolates from the porcine respiratory tract, primarily from lungs with pathological changes, were investigated.

[Listeriosis in the European brown hare in northern Germany].

During the years 1988-1997 listeriosis was detected in nine (2.4%) of 373 perished hares, in one of these cases calicivirus was additionally found. The listeriosis occurred sporadically.

[Yersinia enterocolitica serovar 2a, wb, 3:b,c biovar 5 in hares and sheep].

During the last fourty years the "hare type" of Yersinia enterocolitica was detected in the brown hare and other mammals in several European countries. In northern Germany (Province of Schleswig-Holstein) the pathogen was not found in the post mortem materials of the cattle, swine and horses during the years 1990-1996. In approximately 1,000 sheep studied this yersinia was cultured from the internal organs of one diarrhoeic lamb.

[Evaluating physical fitness after unilateral lung transplantation with ergometry and blood gas analysis].

7 patients aged 30-56 years with the perception of subjective increased fitness 4-22 months after single lung transplantation were tested for the objective benefit. Using a standardized ergometric test protocol cardiopulmonary parameters (ventilation, blood gases, gas exchange, blood pressure, ECG) were measured 5 males and 2 females. After transplantation in all patients the objective fitness was increased by 30-60 watts and the blood gases were markedly improved.

Contribution to some phenotypical characteristics of Vibrio cincinnatiensis. Studies in one strain of a diarrhoeic human patient and in two isolates from aborted bovine fetuses.

Until now, only a few strains of V. cincinnatiensis have been isolated. This study describes a further three isolates which originated in one case from a stool specimen of an immunocompromised elder patient suffering from enteritis and in two cases from the rennin stomachs of aborted bovine fetuses.

Lior-serotype variants in Campylobacter isolates from the same stool sample.

Campylobacter strains isolated from the same stool sample were characterised by determination of biochemical properties and both heat-labile (Lior) and heat-stable (Lauwers) serotypes. In six of 60 campylobacter-infected stools, two or three strains differing in Lior-serotype were isolated from the same stool. In four of these six cases, the isolates with different Lior-serotypes showed identical biochemical reactions and identical heat-stable antigenic patterns.

Yersinia enterocolitica serovar 1,2a,3 biovar 3 in chinchillas.

Yersinia enterocolitica (serovar 1,2a, 3; biovar 3, autoagglutination test positive) was isolated in a chinchilla, in which autopsy showed the typical lesions associated with pseudotuberculosis. We assume that this "chinchilla type" of Yersinia enterocolitica still persists among stock, more than thirty years after its discovery. A brief overview of the distribution of the pathogen in Europe and North America is given.

Urinary tract infection due to a mucoid (M) form of Salmonella. A "new" transformation from M form into T1 form.

An eighty-year-old patient suffering from prostatic hypertrophy developed cystitis associated with fever, macrohematuria and significant bacteriuria. In urine cultures, growth of a mucoid (M) form of Salmonella was seen which changed into a T1 form after having been stored at room temperature or passed through U tubes. While the M form did not agglutinate in Salmonella O and H antisera, H antigens of the T1 form could be identified as l,v and 1.

[Procedure for determining various kinds of airway obstruction--informative content and significance for geriatrics].

For testing the airway obstruction the flow volume curve, the body plethysmogaphy, the oscillation technique, the peak flow measurement were used. The flow volume curve and peak flow test are the most important tests on elderly patients. The body plethysmography is the reference method.

Salmonella in snakes of the Gran Chaco, Paraguay. Description of the "new" flagellar antigen RZ72.

Despite its world-wide distribution, the pathogenic serogroup O: 5, 27 of Yersinia enterocolitica (Y. e.) has scarcely been considered in the Federal Republic of Germany.

[Factors influencing the diagnosis of lung function and our current reference values--results of the Pathophysiology of Respiration Society].

Reference values for lung function testing were determined of the spirometric volume and ventilation parameters VC, FEV1, RV (n = 3,750), bodyplethysmographic airway resistance and residual volume blood gases in rest (n = 5,779) and exercise (n = 117) considering the main influencing factors age, height, sex. The results were compared with international standards. Eleven laboratories of our country were engaged in examinations.

[Prognosis and indications of corticosteroid treatment of intrathoracic sarcoidosis--conclusions from a prospective study].

Preliminary results of a prospective clinical trial to evaluate the value of corticosteroid therapy of intrathoracic sarcoidosis had demonstrated that there were no differences between treated and untreated patients with regard to the clinical, radiological and functional outcome after several years.
