A sudden, unexplained decline and collapse of young apple trees on dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks has been reported across North America over the past decade. Although viruses have been detected in declining trees, no information is available on their potential causal role in the decline phenomenon. To this end, virus-inoculated apple trees were established in a high-density experimental orchard and monitored over five years.

Incubation of cocaine craving, a translationally relevant model for the persistence of drug craving during abstinence, ultimately depends on strengthening of nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) synapses through synaptic insertion of homomeric GluA1 Ca-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs). Here we tested the hypothesis that CP-AMPAR upregulation results from a form of homeostatic plasticity, previously characterized in vitro and in other brain regions, that depends on retinoic acid (RA) signaling in dendrites. Under normal conditions, ongoing synaptic transmission maintains intracellular Ca at levels sufficient to suppress RA synthesis.

Relapse represents a consistent clinical problem for individuals with substance use disorder. In the incubation of craving model of persistent craving and relapse, cue-induced drug seeking progressively intensifies or "incubates" during the first weeks of abstinence from drug self-administration and then remains high for months. Previously, we and others have demonstrated that expression of incubated cocaine craving requires strengthening of excitatory synaptic transmission in the nucleus accumbens core (NAcc).

We compare public perceptions of restoring different ecosystems to increase CO uptake in Germany, through focus groups and a general population survey. Among focus group participants forests were highly popular, peatlands evoked negative associations, and seagrass was largely unknown. Nevertheless, the restoration of all ecosystems was viewed positively.

Rationale: Incubation of cocaine craving refers to the progressive intensification of cue-induced craving during abstinence from cocaine self-administration. We showed previously that homomeric GluA1 Ca-permeable AMPARs (CP-AMPAR) accumulate in excitatory synapses of nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) medium spiny neurons (MSN) after ∼1 month of abstinence and thereafter their activation is required for expression of incubation. Therefore, it is important to understand mechanisms underlying CP-AMPAR plasticity.

Many viruses occur in apple ( (Borkh.)), but no information is available on their seed transmissibility. Here, we report that six viruses infecting apple trees, namely, apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), apple green crinkle-associated virus (AGCaV), apple rubbery wood virus 2 (ARWV2), apple stem grooving virus (ASGV), apple stem pitting virus (ASPV), and citrus concave gum-associated virus (CCGaV) occur in seeds extracted from apple fruits produced by infected maternal trees.

Background: Men make use of outpatient cancer counseling less commonly than women, even when they stand to benefit from it.

Methods: In a cluster-randomized trial (registered under DRKS00032181), we studied whether measures on multiple levels (information for referring physicians, public information, structural changes, offerings specifically for male patients) over a period of 12 months would be able to increase the percentage of men among patients seeking outpatient cancer counseling (primary endpoint, initial contact; secondary endpoint, all contacts). The intervention effect was quantified by the fitting of generalized linear mixed models to obtain an odds ratio, which was adjusted for cluster structure and for the percentages of first contacts and of all contacts during the 12 months before the start of the intervention.

Rapid apple decline is a phenomenon characterized by a weakening of young apple trees in high density orchards, often followed by their quick collapse. The nature of this phenomenon remains unclear. In this work, we investigated the root system architecture (RSA) of declining and non-declining apple trees in two orchards in New York State.

In recent years, various forms of caloric restriction (CR) and amino acid or protein restriction (AAR or PR) have shown not only success in preventing age-associated diseases, such as type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, but also potential for cancer therapy. These strategies not only reprogram metabolism to low-energy metabolism (LEM), which is disadvantageous for neoplastic cells, but also significantly inhibit proliferation. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is one of the most common tumour types, with over 600,000 new cases diagnosed annually worldwide.

Relapse is a major problem in treating methamphetamine use disorder. "Incubation of craving" during abstinence is a rat model for persistence of vulnerability to craving and relapse. While methamphetamine incubation has previously been demonstrated in male and female rats, it has not been demonstrated after withdrawal periods greater than 51 d and most mechanistic work used males.

Introduction: After solid-organ transplantation (SOTx), recipients must adhere to a lifelong medical regimen, change their lifestyle and cope with physiological and psychosocial challenges. This requires active participation in their care and self-management abilities. The concept of self-management after SOTx has only been described regarding specific organs and focused on adherence to medical treatment.

Parkinson's disease is frequently treated with combinations of levodopa/carbidopa and, at the occurrence of motor fluctuations, levodopa/carbidopa/entacapone. For these (and other) medications, using generic versions can reduce costs. To show that generic drugs are equivalent to the originator drug, regulations usually refer to the bioavailability of active ingredients, which is influenced by the selected dosage form and the chosen excipients.

Bud dormancy is a genotype-dependent mechanism observed in species in which bud growth is inhibited, and the accumulation of a specific amount of chilling (endodormancy) and heat (ecodormancy) is necessary to resume growth and reach flowering. We analyzed publicly available transcriptome data from fifteen cultivars of four species (almond, apricot, peach, and sweet cherry) sampled at endo- and ecodormancy points to identify conserved genes and pathways associated with dormancy control in the genus. A total of 13,018 genes were differentially expressed during dormancy transitions, of which 139 and 223 were of interest because their expression profiles correlated with endo- and ecodormancy, respectively, in at least one cultivar of each species.

Article Synopsis
  • - Nonlimited proliferation is a key characteristic of cancer cells, which rely on sufficient mass (amino acids) and energy (ATP, NADH) for division; restrictions in these resources can impact lifespan and diseases like cancer.
  • - A specific cell line (L929) shows a metabolic response to methionine restriction (MetR), characterized by low energy metabolism (LEM) and distinct molecular markers like acetoacetate and ATP.
  • - Mass spectrometry revealed that while healthy cells maintain energy for growth, MetR triggers LEM regardless of proliferation or contact inhibition, suggesting potential therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at the differences between cancer patients who went back to work and those who didn't over one year.
  • Out of 430 patients, 73.7% returned to work, but non-working patients had higher feelings of sadness, worry, and stress.
  • It suggests that getting back to work might help cancer survivors feel better mentally, but more research is needed to prove this.
