[Bacteriologic quality of water from the Rhine and its tributaries in the Rhine-Neckar region. II. Salmonellas--public health significance and health risks].

Salmonella-infections, the epidemiology and the spread of these germs into the environment are a serious hygienic problem even today. Probably one of the most important reservoirs of germs is the water of rivers and lakes. Its relevance for the infective chain in the overcrowded region Rhein-Neckar was examined very insufficiently until now.

[Bacteriologic quality of water from the Rhine and its tributaries in the Rhine-Neckar region. I. Bacterial count and Enterobacteriaceae of the current status of pollution].

During the period of May 1982 to January 1983 and March 1986 to May 1986, 164 water-specimens had been collected along the river Rhine and its affluxes in the overcrowded Rhine-Neckar-Region from 34 collecting-sites on 8 different days. The specimens were tested for the total-germ-count and the titers of different Enterobacteriaceae-species. The total-germ-count examined concentrations of several hundreds up to 1.

Studies on the Synergism of Ciprofloxacin with beta-Lactam Antibiotics, Gentamicin, Minocycline and Pipemidic Acid. Using Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae/Klebsiella oxytoca, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus strains, we examined a possible influence of pipemidic acid, minocycline, gentamicin, cefazolin, mezlocillin and ampicillin on the antibiotic activity of ciprofloxacin. We found in all bacterial species synergistic influence by pipemidic acid.

[The behavior of Campylobacter jejuni in various foodstuffs].

For the purpose of ascertaining the survival time of Campylobacter jejuni in foodstuffs under differing conditions, milk, ice-cream, meat salad and drinking water were inoculated with a defined quantity of Campylobacter jejuni and subsequently the number of colony-forming units was determined at first at 12-hour intervals and later once a day. It was found that the survival time in milk at +5 degrees C was 15 days, in drinking water 6 days, but only 7 and 4 days respectively at 22 degrees C. In frozen ice-cream (vanilla) C.

[Susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to aztreonam in comparison to other pseudomonas-active beta-lactam antibiotics and gentamicin].

The in vitro activity of aztreonam, a synthetic monobactam, was evaluated against 245 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 130 of them being recent clinical isolates from patients and 115 from hospital environment. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and bactericidal kinetics were determined. The possibility of resistance development in vitro was studied.

[Antibiotic activity and synergism of ceftazidime and netilmicin against gram-negative pathogenic bacteria].

The in vitro activity of ceftazidime and netilmicin against gram-negative bacteria often causing hospital infections was evaluated and furthermore synergistic effects of these antibiotics were studied. Ceftazidime was as active as netilmicin against Enterobacteriaceae, e.g.

Ceftriaxon (Ro 13-9904) is a new cephalosporin, whose structure resembles cefotaxime. This study compares the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC-s) of Ceftriaxon, cefoperazone, cefotaxime, lamoxactam and gentamicin against 622 isolates of various Enterobacteriaceae, non-fermenters and Aeromonas hydrophila. Furthermore the minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC-s) were determined for some organism; additionally destruction of beta-lactamantibiotics in the presence of beta-lactamases was studied by a bioassay technique.

[Moxalactam and cefotaxime--two new beta-lactam antibiotics compared with three well-known cephalosporins].

This study compares the minimum inhibitory concentrations of moxalactam and cefotaxime, two beta-lactam-antibiotics, with those of cefoxitin, cefuroxime, and cefazolin for 523 gram-positive and -negative strains. Moxalactam and cefotaxime inhibit nearly all clinically important Enterobacteriaceae at concentrations less than 0.05 microgram/ml.

[The distribution of antibiotics in extravascular renal tissue during experimental pyelonephritis of dogs (author's transl)].

For the success of an antibiotic therapy in pyelonephritis the concentration of antibiotics attainable in the kidney tissue is of extreme importance. Therefore in dogs, besides serum level and urin level a tissue level was defined after a single dose of gentamycin and cefazolin. While gentamycin is highly concentrated in the kidney, which is indeed more in a state of shock than health, Cefalozin is being excreted, after initially high values, excreted in a course approximately parallel to the blood level curve, within 5 h down to concentrations between 1 mcg/ml and 4 mcg/ml.

The epidemiological situation of brucellosis in Africa.

Brucellosis, as a geomedical literature survey has shown, is spread to a higher of lesser degree of incidence virtually over the whole African continent. Its epidemiological spectrum of host animals is especially rich amongst the domestic and wild animal species. All domestic animal species and 21 of 26 herbivorous and 5 of 12 carnivorous wild animal species screened yielded positive brucella antibody serotitres.
