Article Synopsis
  • Patients who have suffered a stroke are at higher risk for developing post-stroke dementia, and the presence of serum anti-NMDA receptor autoantibodies (NMDAR1-abs) may negatively impact cognitive outcomes, particularly memory.
  • In a study using the DEMDAS cohort, researchers found that 10.2% of stroke patients were seropositive for NMDAR1-abs, but this did not correlate with overall cognitive decline.
  • However, those with NMDAR1-abs did show significantly worse performance in memory tasks and were more likely to experience memory impairment one year post-stroke, indicating a specific link between these autoantibodies and memory dysfunction.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a contrast agent-free magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF). We sought to investigate effects of CBF within the infarct on outcome and risk of hemorrhagic transformation (HT). In 111 patients (median age: 74 years, 50 men) who had undergone mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for ischemic stroke of the anterior circulation (median interval: 4 days between MT and MRI), post-stroke %CBF difference from pseudo-continuous ASL was calculated within the diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-positive infarct territory following lesion segmentation in relationship to the unaffected contralateral side.

Background: Endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke has been shown to be highly effective in selected patients. However, the ideal criteria for patient selection are still debated. It is well known that collateral flow is an important factor, but the assessment is often subjective and time-consuming.

Background: Juvenile strokes (< 55 years) account for about 15% of all ischemic strokes. Structured data on clinical outcome in those patients are sparse. Here, we aimed to fill this gap by systematically collecting relevant data and modeling a juvenile stroke prediction score for the 3-month functional outcome.

Purpose: The emerging zoonotic Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) and the variegated squirrel bornavirus 1 (VSBV-1) cause severe and fatal human encephalitis in Germany. We conducted the first systematic clinical analysis of acute, molecularly confirmed fatal bornavirus encephalitis cases comprising 21 BoDV-1 and four VSBV-1 patients to identify options for better diagnosis and timely treatment.

Methods: Analyses were based on medical records and, for BoDV-1, on additional medical interviews with patients' relatives.

Engineered artificial minerals (EnAMs) are the core of a new concept of designing scavenger compounds for the recovery of critical elements from slags. It requires a fundamental understanding of solidification from complex oxide melts. Ion diffusivity and viscosity play vital roles in this process.

Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) was just recently shown to cause predominantly fatal encephalitis in humans. Despite its rarity, bornavirus encephalitis (BVE) can be considered a model disease for encephalitic infections caused by neurotropic viruses and understanding its pathomechanism is of utmost relevance. Aim of this study was to compare the extent and distribution pattern of cerebral inflammation with the clinical course of disease, and individual therapeutic procedures.

Article Synopsis
  • Basilar artery occlusion (BAO) can result from either embolism or thrombosis due to basilar stenosis, with the latter (BAOS) leading to worse clinical outcomes compared to embolic occlusions (BAOE).
  • A study involving 199 patients found that specific brain regions, particularly the medulla oblongata and inferior pons, played a critical role in predicting unfavorable early outcomes after BAO, with BAOS patients having larger infarct volumes.
  • Successful reperfusion was more common in BAOE patients, indicating that differences in occlusion type and brain stem infarct patterns significantly impact recovery and outcomes after treatment.

Food practices directly or indirectly depend on tradition and the rituals that sustain a commonality of communal purpose. By invoking tradition and embracing accepted values through prescribed participation, a transnational and to a certain extent her or his progeny, are anchored to a cultural community. Émigrés must decide from a pastiche of food choices from "here" or from "home," that will mark family and self-identity.

Background: Nowadays, there is no method to quantitatively characterize the material composition of acute ischemic stroke thrombi prior to intervention, but dual-energy CT (DE-CT) offers imaging-based multimaterial decomposition. We retrospectively investigated the material composition of thrombi ex vivo using DE-CT with histological analysis as a reference.

Methods: Clots of 70 patients with acute ischemic stroke were extracted by mechanical thrombectomy and scanned ex vivo in formalin-filled tubes with DE-CT.

Cognitive deficits are a core symptom of schizophrenia, but research on their neural underpinnings has been challenged by the heterogeneity in deficits' severity among patients. Here, we address this issue by combining logistic regression and random forest to classify two neuropsychological profiles of patients with high (HighCog) and low (LowCog) cognitive performance in two independent samples. We based our analysis on the cortical features grey matter volume (VOL), cortical thickness (CT), and mean curvature (MC) of N = 57 patients (discovery sample) and validated the classification in an independent sample (N = 52).

Background: Subclinical myocardial injury in form of hs-cTn (high-sensitivity cardiac troponin)  levels has been associated with cognitive impairment and imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) in population-based and cardiovascular cohorts. Whether hs-cTn is associated with domain-specific cognitive decline and SVD burden in patients with stroke remains unknown.

Methods And Results: We analyzed patients with acute stroke without premorbid dementia from the prospective multicenter DEMDAS (DZNE [German Center for Neurodegenerative Disease]-Mechanisms of Dementia after Stroke) study.

Background: Autoantibodies against the potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily A member 2 (KCNA2) have been described in a few cases of neuropsychiatric disorders, but their diagnostic and pathophysiological role is currently unknown, imposing challenges to medical practice.

Design / Methods: We retrospectively collected comprehensive clinical and paraclinical data of 35 patients with KCNA2 IgG autoantibodies detected in cell-based and tissue-based assays. Patients' sera and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were used for characterization of the antigen, clinical-serological correlations, and determination of IgG subclasses.

Background: Treatment of hematological malignancies with chimeric antigen receptor modified T cells (CART) is highly efficient, but often limited by an immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS). As conventional MRI is often unremarkable during ICANS, we aimed to examine whether resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) is suitable to depict and quantify brain network alterations underlying ICANS in the individual patient.

Methods: The dysconnectivity index (DCI) based on rsfMRI was longitudinally assessed in systemic lymphoma patients and 1 melanoma patient during ICANS and before or after clinical resolution of ICANS.

Purpose: Prompt endovascular treatment of patients with stroke due to intracranial Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO) is a major challenge in rural areas because neurointerventionalists are usually not available. As a result, treatment is delayed, and clinical outcomes are worse compared with patients primarily treated in comprehensive stroke centers (CSC). To address this problem, we present a concept in which interdisciplinary, on-site endovascular treatment is performed in a Primary Stroke Center (PSC) by a team of interventional neuroradiologists and cardiologists: the Rendez-Vous approach.

Nivolumab is a promising monoclonal antibody inhibitor of programmed death-1, a protein on the surface of T-cells. As such, it is approved for use in patients with multiple advanced malignancies and can significantly elongate progression-free survival. However, monoclonal antibody inhibitors can lead to adverse hepatic reactions, which in rare cases result in further hepatic damage.

Background And Purpose: Inflammation has been linked to poor prognoses in cardio- and cerebrovascular conditions. As it is known to increase after ischemia, C-reactive protein (CRP) may serve as a surrogate for systemic inflammation and thus be a hallmark of increased tissue vulnerability. The question arises whether CRP in the acute phase of ischemic stroke, prior to mechanical thrombectomy (MT), might help predict outcomes.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss of paternal expression of imprinted genes on chromosome 15q11-q13. We established a human induced pluripotent stem cell line (hiPSC), ZIPi021-A, from fibroblasts of a 4-year-old female PWS patient with the subtype of maternal uniparental disomy (mUPD). The generated hiPSC line was transgene-free, expressed pluripotency markers and showed the ability to differentiate into all three germ layers in vitro.
