Article Synopsis
  • Medical plants can be fermented using microbes like Monascus species to enhance their health benefits, reduce toxicity, and create new compounds.
  • In this study, researchers identified the production of monacolin K from Monascus strains and observed its benefits, including increased antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties through fermentation with various medicinal plants.
  • The results showed that Monascus pilosus and Monascus ruber produced monacolin K, with the highest levels found in Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and certain metabolites improved the extract's health benefits without causing toxicity.

Article Synopsis
  • Tibetan kefir grain was studied for its bioactive properties, and after fermentation, a milk whey product (TKG-MW) was produced with beneficial effects.
  • The research showed that TKG-MW had increased antioxidant activity and significant anti-inflammatory effects, particularly after six days of fermentation.
  • Additionally, TKG-MW demonstrated the ability to inhibit melanin production, making it a potential ingredient for depigmenting products in food and cosmetics.

Few effective treatments for chronic Keshan disease have been available till now. The efficacy of long-term selenium supplementation in the treatment of chronic Keshan disease with congestive heart failure is inconclusive. This study aimed to determine whether selenium supplementation is associated with a decreased risk of cardiac death in chronic Keshan disease with congestive heart failure by ten years of follow-up.

Neoagaro-oligosaccharides prepared by agar hydrolysis have various application fields, including the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. In this study, an agarolytic strain was isolated from a saltwater hot spring and identified as Microbulbifer pacificus LD25 by 16S rRNA. The whole genome sequence of M.

Milkfish (), which is resistant to water quality changes is the fourth largest aquaculture commodity. Abandoned wastes of fish scale and bones aggravate environmental pollution. In this study, the effect of collagen peptides isolated from milkfish scales (MSCP) by pepsin-soluble collagen method on cell viability was investigated.

Arctigenin (ATG), a lignin extracted from Arctium lappa (L.), exerts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. We hypothesized that ATG exerts a protective effect on hepatocytes by preventing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) progression associated with lipid oxidation-associated lipotoxicity and inflammation.

A new piperidine alkaloid, microcosamine C (1), and one known compound, microcosamine A (2) were isolated from the leaves of Microcos paniculata. Structure elucidation was carried out using HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic methods and by comparison with data reported in the literature. The absolute configuration at the C-3 hydroxy group of 1 was established by a Mosher esterification procedure.

Objective: To observe ten-year prognosis of patients with latent Keshan disease (KD) and to determine its associated risk factors.

Methods: A total of 448 patients with newly diagnosed latent KD were monitored and followed up for 10 years. Their ECG abnormalities were classified as major or minor using the Minnesota Code.

The etiology of Keshan disease (KD), an endemic myocardiopathy in regions of China, is largely unknown. To show the protein changes in serum from KD patients versus controls and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) and to search specific biological markers for differential diagnosis for KD. Serum of 65 patients with KD was compared with 29 patients with IDCM, 62 controls from KD areas and 28 controls from non-KD areas by ClinProt/MALDI-ToF technique.

Keshan disease (KD) is an endemic dilated cardiomyopathy with unclear etiology. In this study, we compared mitochondrial-related gene expression profiles of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) derived from 16 KD patients and 16 normal controls in KD areas. Total RNA was isolated, amplified, labeled and hybridized to Agilent human 4 × 44k whole genome microarrays.

The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and Fas genes and Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) in Shaanxi province, Northwest in China. Blood samples of 388 residents were collected from 14 KBD villages in Linyou and Yongshou counties, Shaanxi, Northern of China. One hundred eighty-six cases with KBD and 202 cases of health in KBD areas were diagnosed by "Diagnosis Criterion of Kashin-Beck disease in China (WS/T207- 2010)".

Objective: To investigate the effect of a traditional Chinese medicine compound (CTMC) on chronic heart failure (CHF) in guinea-pigs.

Methods: The CHF of guinea-pigs were induced by repeated injection of hyodemic isoproterenol. The hemodynamics, organ (heart, lung, liver and kidney)/body weight ratio, pathological changes, and serum cTn-I and CK-MB were measured to determine the effectiveness of the traditional Chinese medicine treatement.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the changes of serum proteome and discover potential biomarkers for Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) using surface-enhanced laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF MS). The serum protein profiles from 102 cases (36 KBD patients, 16 controls in KBD areas, 33 controls in non-KBD areas, and 17 osteoarthritis controls) were detected by SELDI-TOF MS and weak cation-exchange protein chip. Differently expressed peaks in KBD were identified by comparing the data among the four groups using the nonparametric Mann-Whitney test with Bonferroni correction at a significance level of 0.
