Piezoionic materials have attracted considerable attention for their ability to generate iontronic signals or power in response to stress stimuli. However, the limited intrinsic transport distinction between cations and anions within most ionic materials results in weakened iontronic power conversion efficiencies under stress fields. Here, we report a piezoheterogated biphasic gel for ultrahigh iontronic generation, characterized by high-internal microphase heterointerfaces that facilitate the distinct transport of various ion species.

Currently, existing iontronic systems are limited and struggle to process electronic-to-multi-ionic transport, resulting in interchange inefficiencies and incompatibilities between artificial ion devices and biological tissue interfaces. The development of heterogating gel iontronics offers a significant advancement in bridging this gap, drawing inspiration from the complex ionic transmission mechanisms found in biological synapses within neural networks. These heterogating gels utilize a biphasic architecture, where the heterointerface effect constructs ionic transfer energy barriers, enabling distinct signal transmission among different ions.

Article Synopsis
  • Nicotine exposure during pregnancy negatively impacts the development of long bones in female offspring, leading to low bone mass.
  • A rat model study showed that prenatal nicotine exposure increases apoptosis in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and suppresses bone-forming functions, indicated by changes in gene expression.
  • Treatment with IGF1 can partially reduce BMSC apoptosis, suggesting that the IGF1 signaling pathway is inhibited by prenatal nicotine exposure, contributing to the observed bone mass deficits.

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver ailment that can lead to serious conditions such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatic Nogo-B regulates glucose and lipid metabolism, and its inhibition has been shown to be protective against metabolic syndrome. Increasing evidence suggests that imbalances in the gut microbiota (GM) and lipid metabolism disorders are significant contributors to NAFLD progression.

Sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC) is generally characterized by decreased cardiac ejection fraction (EF) reversibility, less cardiac response to fluid resuscitation and catecholamine, and rarely complicated with refractory ventricular fibrillation (RVF). Once RVF is induced, the mortality rate of sepsis patients will be greatly increased. In this case, we reported a 26-year-old female patient who was diagnosed sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC), presented with RVF for 36 hours.

Objective: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI), a type of acute inflammation, has sparked significant concern owing to its unpredictability and severity. Psoraleae Fructus (PF), an edible Chinese herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), causes liver injury. Therefore, the elucidation of the mechanism underlying PF-induced liver injury and the search for more effective means of detoxification using herbal compatibility has become an urgent issue.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examines how different types and amounts of pasture fibers affect the thermal properties of slag bricks, which are made from recyclable materials like slag and sand.
  • - Using software (Minitab 18.1.0), the researchers analyzed the impact of fiber size, content, and type on the thermal performance of these bricks, finding that initial increases in fiber content decrease thermal performance before improving it again.
  • - The findings suggest that adding pasture fibers not only minimizes waste in pastoral areas but also helps create sustainable building materials with better thermal properties.

The construction industry's high energy consumption and carbon emissions negatively impact the ecological environment; large-scale construction projects consume much energy and emit a significant amount of CO into the atmosphere. Statistics show that 30% of energy loss and 40% of solid waste in the construction industry are generated during construction. Therefore, reducing emissions during construction has significant research potential and value.

Osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) is important for human bone formation. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are critical regulators in osteogenic differentiation. This study aimed to explore the function and mechanisms of long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 963 (LINC00963) in affecting osteogenesis.

Affective computing, representing the forefront of human-machine interaction, is confronted with the pressing challenges of the execution speed and power consumption brought by the transmission of massive data. Herein, we introduce a bionic organic memristor inspired by the ligand-gated ion channels (LGICs) to facilitate near-sensor affective computing based on electroencephalography (EEG). It is constructed from a coordination polymer comprising Co ions and benzothiadiazole (Co-BTA), featuring multiple switching sites for redox reactions.

Health risks of microplastic exposure have drawn growing global concerns due to the widespread distribution of microplastics in the environment. However, more evidence is needed to understand the exposure characteristics of microplastics owing to the limitation of current spectrum technologies, especially the missing information on small-sized particles. In the present study, laser direct infrared spectroscopy and thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined pyrolysis using a tubular furnace (TD-GC/MS) were employed to comprehensively detect the presence of plastic particles down to 0.

Gallium nitride (GaN) nanowire, as a type of wide bandgap nanomaterial, has attracted considerable interest because of its outstanding physicochemical properties and applications in energy storage and photoelectric devices. In this study, we prepared GaN nanowires via a facile chemical vapor deposition method and investigated their nonlinear absorption responses ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared in the z-scan technology under irradiation by picosecond laser pulses. The experiment revealed that GaN nanowires exhibit remarkable nonlinear absorption characteristics attributed to their wide bandgap and nanostructure, including saturable absorption and reverse saturable absorption.

In this study, we investigated the adsorption of Cd(II) and the biosynthesis of CdS quantum dots (QDs) mediated by cells of sulfate-reducing bacteria before and after the removal of EPS to determine whether EPS or the cell wall plays a major role. Potentiometric titration revealed that the concentration of proton-active binding sites on cells with EPS (EPS-intact) was notably higher than that on cells without EPS (EPS-free) and that the sites were predominantly carboxyl, phosphoryl, hydroxyl, and amine groups. The protein content in EPS-intact cells was higher, and thus the Cd(II) adsorption capacity was stronger.

In the realm of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway has been thoroughly investigated and established. Despite this, the clinical approval of drugs targeting the cGAS-STING pathway has been limited. The Total glucosides of paeony (TGP) is highly anti-inflammatory and is commonly used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), emerged as a subject of our study.

Conventional solid ion channel systems relying on single one- or two-dimensional confined nanochannels enabled selective and ultrafast convective ion transport. However, due to intrinsic solid channel stacking, these systems often face pore-pore polarization and ion concentration blockage, thereby restricting their efficiency in macroscale ion transport. Here, we constructed a soft heterolayer-gel system that integrated an ion-selective hydrogel layer with a water-barrier organogel layer, achieving ultrahigh cation selectivity and flux and effectively providing high-efficiency gradient energy conversion on a macroscale order of magnitude.
