Objectives: Cognition consists of specific domains that are differentially linked to health outcomes. We provide guidance on how to derive cognitive domains in the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) study. We suggest the use of a bifactor analysis to derive cognitive domains.

Impact of Social Disadvantage on Medical and Functional Severity in Children With Cerebral Palsy.

Background: Those with neurological disorders like cerebral palsy (CP) may experience an altered impact of social determinates of health on child functioning and well-being. We investigated the relationship between relative social advantage and medical and functional outcomes in a large cohort of children, adolescents and young adults with CP (n = 1269, aged 2-84 years).

Methods: We extracted data from the Cerebral Palsy Research Registry and dichotomized a range of independent factors (income, ethnicity and race) into advantaged and disadvantaged/vulnerable and a range of medical and functional outcomes (gross motor, manual ability, behaviour, breathing, nutritional intake, hearing, seizures, language and vision) and computed odds ratios using logistic regression.

Mapping management intensity types in grasslands with synergistic use of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite images.

Grasslands, being vital ecosystems with significant ecological and socio-economic importance, have been the subject of increasing attention due to their role in biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, and agricultural productivity. However, accurately classifying grassland management intensity, namely extensive and intensive practices, remains challenging, especially across large spatial extents. This research article presents a comprehensive investigation into the classification of grassland management intensity in two distinct regions of Poland, NUTS2 - namely Podlaskie (PL84) and Wielkopolskie (PL41), by integrating data from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery.

Integrating AlphaFold pLDDT Scores into CABS-flex for enhanced protein flexibility simulations.

CABS-flex is a well-established method for fast protein flexibility simulations, offering an effective balance between computational efficiency and accuracy in modeling protein dynamics. To further enhance its predictive capabilities, we propose incorporating AlphaFold's predicted Local Distance Difference Test (pLDDT) scores into CABS-flex simulations. The pLDDT scores, which reflect the confidence of AlphaFold's structural predictions, were integrated with secondary structure information to refine the restraint schemes used in the simulations.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major health burden after cardiac surgery. Renal vasoconstriction and venous congestion can be assessed via transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). The primary objective is to determine feasibility of measuring intraoperative Renal resistive index (RRI) and portal vein pulsatility fraction (PF) by TEE.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has applications in research, epidemiology, oncology, and infectious disease diagnostics. Wide variability exists in NGS wet laboratory techniques and dry laboratory analytical considerations. Thus, many questions remain unanswered when NGS methods are implemented in laboratories for infectious disease testing.

Synthesis of Solketal Catalyzed by Acid-Modified Pyrolytic Carbon Black from Waste Tires.

Solketal, a widely used glycerol-derived solvent, can be efficiently synthesized through heterogeneous catalysis, thus avoiding the significant product losses typically encountered with aqueous work-up in homogeneous catalysis. This study explores the catalytic synthesis of solketal using solid acid catalysts derived from recovered carbon blacks (rCBs), which are obtained through the pyrolysis of end-of-life tires. This was further converted into solid acid catalysts through the introduction of acidic functional groups using concentrated HSO or 4-benzenediazonium sulfonate (BDS) as sulfonating agents.

Examining the Sensitivity of Satellite-Derived Vegetation Indices to Plant Drought Stress in Grasslands in Poland.

In this study, the emphasis is on assessing how satellite-derived vegetation indices respond to drought stress characterized by meteorological observations. This study aimed to understand the dynamics of grassland vegetation and assess the impact of drought in the Wielkopolskie (PL41) and Podlaskie (PL84) regions of Poland. Spatial and temporal characteristics of grassland dynamics regarding drought occurrences from 2020 to 2023 were examined.

Exploring protein functions from structural flexibility using CABS-flex modeling.

Understanding protein function often necessitates characterizing the flexibility of protein structures. However, simulating protein flexibility poses significant challenges due to the complex dynamics of protein systems, requiring extensive computational resources and accurate modeling techniques. In response to these challenges, the CABS-flex method has been developed as an efficient modeling tool that combines coarse-grained simulations with all-atom detail.

Case Report: A 68-year-old female presented for a routine examination with a complaint of right upper eyelid lesions for the past 5 months. On examination, a cluster of elevated and erythematous lesions extending from the medial canthus to the brow area of the right eye were seen.

Which Social Variables Predict Diabetes Onset? Robust Findings in Two National Surveys.

Background And Objectives: The role of social factors in diabetes onset has been obscured by wide variation in their conceptualization and operationalization. We apply 3 theoretical frameworks to categorize social relationship variables along several dimensions and identify which dimension(s) are robustly associated with incident diabetes in the older adult population.

Research Design And Methods: The National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (n = 2,365) and the Health and Retirement Study (n =11,824) provided longitudinal data from 57 to 90-year-old respondents over a 4- to 5-year period.

Delving into human α1,4-galactosyltransferase acceptor specificity: The role of enzyme dimerization.

Human α1,4-galactosyltransferase (A4galt), a Golgi apparatus-resident GT, synthesizes Gb3 glycosphingolipid (GSL) and P1 glycotope on glycoproteins (GPs), which are receptors for Shiga toxin types 1 and 2. Despite the significant role of A4galt in glycosylation processes, the molecular mechanisms underlying its varied acceptor specificities remain poorly understood. Here, we attempted to elucidate A4galt specificity towards GSLs and GPs by exploring its interaction with GTs with various acceptor specificities, GP-specific β1,4-galactosyltransferase 1 (B4galt1) and GSL-specific β1,4-galactosyltransferase isoenzymes 5 and 6 (B4galt5 and B4galt6).

Epigenetic regulation of the oxytocin system as an indicator of adaptation to over-controlling parenting and psychosocial functioning in adulthood.

The oxytocin system plays a role in social stress adaptation, and this role is likely to be particularly important in adolescence. One method of regulating the oxytocin system is through DNA methylation in the promoter of the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTRm), which reduces the gene's expression. This multi-method, longitudinal study, using a diverse community sample of 184 adolescents followed from age 13-28, examined the links between OXTRm and exposure to over-controlling parenting in adolescence and conflict with romantic partners and internalizing symptoms in adulthood.

Background: Sensory disability in older adults is associated with increased rates of depressive symptoms and loneliness. Here, we examined the impact of hearing, vision, and olfaction disability on mental health outcomes in older US adults.

Methods: We studied respondents from the first three rounds (2005/6, 2010/11, and 2015/16) of the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project, a nationally representative, longitudinal study of older US adults.

Prediabetes Progression and Reversion: Social Factors and Racial/Ethnic Differences.

Objective: Racial and ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected by diabetes. Social characteristics, such as family structure, social support, and loneliness, may contribute to these health disparities. In a nationally representative sample of diverse older adults, we evaluated longitudinal rates of both progression from prediabetes to diabetes and reversion from prediabetes to normoglycemia.

Food insecurity and quality of life in patients with sickle cell disease.

Little is known about the relationship between quality of life (QOL) and food insecurity (FI) among patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). We hypothesized FI is associated with lower QOL in children and young adults with SCD. Overall (N = 99), 22% screened positive for FI.

Collaborative Integration of Community Health Workers in Hospitals and Health Centers to Reduce Pediatric Asthma Disparities: A Quality Improvement Program Evaluation.

To address pediatric asthma disparities on the South Side of Chicago, a community health worker (CHW) home visiting intervention was implemented collaboratively by academic institutions and community based health centers. This evaluation assessed the effectiveness of this longitudinal quality improvement CHW intervention in reducing asthma morbidity and healthcare utilization. All patients aged 2-18 who met the high-risk clinical criteria in outpatient settings or those who visited the ED due to asthma were offered the program.

Sociodemographic and Clinical Predictors of Prolonged Length of Corneal Ulcer Hospitalizations.

Importance: The length of stay (LOS) of hospitalizations may be a useful indicator of the burden of disease of corneal ulcers. Identifying variables associated with longer LOS may help to enhance delivery of care for high-risk patients.

The structural modeling of peptides can be a useful aid in the discovery of new drugs and a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms of life. Here we present a novel multiscale protocol for the structure prediction of linear and cyclic peptides. The protocol combines two main stages: coarse-grained simulations using the CABS-flex standalone package and an all-atom reconstruction-optimization process using the Modeller program.

Background: Dysregulated energy metabolism is one hypothesized mechanism underlying frailty.
