The use of wide-pore stationary phases in capillary electrochromatography has shown exceptional increases in separation efficiency in conjunction with high electroosmotic flow. These effects are due to the perfusive flow mechanism which is primarily controlled by the ionic strength of the mobile phase. Good correlation between calculated values of electrochemical double-layer thickness and efficiency data have also been obtained.

A series of substituted angular benzophenazines were prepared using a new synthetic route via a novel regiocontrolled condensation of 1,2-naphthoquinones and 2,3-diaminobenzoic acids. The synthesis and biological activity of this new series of substituted 8,9-benzo[a]phenazine carboxamide systems are described. The analogues were evaluated against the H69 parental human small cell lung carcinoma cell line and H69/LX4 resistant cell line which overexpresses P-glycoprotein.

Currently available capillary electrochromatography (CEC) instrumentation using UV-Vis detection dictates the use of duplex columns. Due to discontinuities (electric field strength and conductivity) that arise at the boundary between the packed and open sections in these columns, the determination of the electroosmotic flow (EOF) is complicated. Thiourea has been found to be an accurate EOF marker under the conditions employed in this study.

This work describes initial investigations of strong anion-exchange (SAX) packing materials for capillary electrochromatography (CEC). The use of SAX phases in CEC is theoretically appealing for the analysis of negatively charged species. The reversed direction of the electroosmotic flow (EOF) generated by SAX phases (in comparison to reversed phases and strong cation-exchange phases) means that negative species can migrate with the EOF, not against it, hence the analysis times, of such species should be decreased and efficiencies improved.

Diaphragm disease (DD) is a radiographically subtle cause of small bowel obstruction and is part of the spectrum of diseases associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug injury. The neuromuscular and vascular hamartoma (NMVH) is a nonepithelial hamartomatous, submucosally based proliferation of mature submucosal elements capable of causing small bowel obstruction. The authors report two patients in whom the clinical setting and gross pathology are that of DD, but the histologic characterization is identical to that described for NMVH.

Reconstitution of lethally irradiated mice with a mixture of mouse and rat bone marrow cells (mouse + rat-->mouse) results in mixed xenogeneic chimerism and donor-specific tolerance. The current study demonstrates that mouse and rat T lymphocytes that have developed in xenogeneic chimeras are restricted to Ag presentation by mouse, but not rat, APC. Restriction to host Ags results in functional immunocompetence with generation of antiviral cytotoxic activity in vivo, within and across species barriers.

Over the past several years, we have developed a technique to assess the resectability of periampullary and pancreatic tumors using color flow sonography. This is a feasibility study to determine if sonography with color flow imaging can play a role in evaluating patients with periampullary and pancreatic tumors. This study comprises a retrospective analysis of 51 patients referred for color flow sonographic evaluation of resectability of periampullary and pancreatic neoplasm.

Young male and female Sprague-Dawley rats (30 days old) were assigned randomly to three treatment groups: (1) alcohol treatment--received beer with 5% ethanol added, food, and water ad libitum; (2) pair-fed treatment--received nonalcoholic beer plus sucrose and food to match intake by the alcohol-treated animals; and (3) control treatment--received food and water ad libitum. Animals were tested for alcohol preference for 24 hr and then received their assigned treatments for a period of 30 days, followed by a period of abstinence before alcohol preference testing again at 74 days of age. Males given free access to beer and water did not drink large quantities of beer.

A theoretical analysis of deviations from ideality in ionic transport is presented to correct mobilities, mu, measured in free solution capillary electrophoresis (CE) to mobility at infinite dilution, mu degree (limiting mobility). Non-ideality is treated at the same level of approximation as in equilibrium, using a correction factor for the sum of the analyte and counter-ion radius originally suggested by Robinson and Stokes (Electrolyte Solutions, 1961). Unlike previous corrections using Debye-Hückel-Onsager theory, which are strictly applicable only at very low ionic strengths, this treatment is expected to be valid for univalent ions migrating in a uni-univalent background electrolyte for ionic strengths up to 0.

Reconstitution of lethally irradiated mice with a mixture of syngeneic and allogeneic (A+B-->A) bone marrow results in multilineage mixed allogeneic chimerism, donor-specific transplantation tolerance, superior immunocompetence and resistance to graft-vs-host disease. However, the morbidity and mortality associated with lethal irradiation would be a major limitation to the clinical application of chimerism to induce tolerance for solid organ grafts or treat other nonmalignant hematologic diseases. We report here that durable multilineage mixed allogeneic chimerism and donor-specific transplantation tolerance for skin and primarily vascularized allografts can be achieved across multiple histocompatibility barriers using a nonmyeloablative radiation-based approach.

Laparoscopic surgery necessitates that operations be performed via a television screen; therefore, image quality is crucial in determining the final outcome. Electronic imaging systems are constantly undergoing revisions and incorporating new ideas. Recently, we have been confronted with a variety of systems, and we, as operators, have no idea what the differences are between the old and the newer systems.

Bone marrow transplantation is an accepted therapy for hematologic malignancies, aplastic anemia, metabolic disorders, and solid tumors. However, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and failure of engraftment have limited the widespread application of this technology to nonmalignant disease states. The use of purified bone marrow stem cells has been suggested as an approach to promote engraftment yet avoid GVHD.

Both ventilator pattern and neutrophil activation influence lung injury in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We therefore questioned whether ventilator pattern independently affects neutrophil accumulation and function in early ARDS. Thirty-five New Zealand White rabbits were anesthetized, paralyzed, and prepared using sterile techniques.

A simple model has been proposed which explains enantiomeric resolution in capillary electrophoresis in terms of differential interactions with a chiral selector and differential migration of the two enantiomer-chiral selector complexes. The equations derived allow predictions to be made and there is good support for the model in literature data.
