The effect of Atorvastatin on transcriptional activity in murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) induced by PLP peptide 139-151 was analyzed by DNA microarray technique in lymph nodes and spinal cord at onset (10 days), height (20 days) and first remission (30 days) of disease. Fourteen genes were selectively influenced by Atorvastatin in EAE mice. They are mainly related to immune cell functions and regulation of cell-to-cell interaction.

The nitric oxide-producing neurons in the rat amygdala (Am) were studied, using reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPHd) histochemistry. Almost all nuclei of the Am contained NADPHd-positive neurons and fibers, but the somatodendritic morphology and the intensity of staining of different subpopulations varied. The strongly stained neurons displayed labeling of the perikaryon and the dendritic tree with Golgi impregnation-like quality, whilst the dendrites of the lightly stained neurons were less successfully followed.

We present a digital atlas system that allows mapping of molecular expression patterns at cellular resolution through large series of histological sections. Using this system, we have mapped the distribution of a distinct marker, encoded by the LacZ reporter gene driven by the tetracycline-responsive prion protein promoter in double transgenic mice. The purpose is to evaluate the suitability of this promoter mouse line for targeting genes of interest to specific brain regions, essential for construction of inducible transgenic disease models.

The dorsal column nuclei (DCN; gracile and cuneate nuclei) give rise to the medial lemniscus, the fibre system that provides an organised somatosensory input to the thalamus. Unlike the spinothalamic and trigeminothalamic tracts that project, also to the ipsilateral thalamus, the medial lemniscus system is believed to be entirely crossed. We demonstrate that DCN emit a small number of axons that reach the ipsilateral thalamus.

Purpose: Glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1), a target gene of hypoxia-inducible factor-1, has been considered a candidate endogenous marker of tumor hypoxia. Expression of GLUT-1 may also serve as an indicator for the induction of the transcriptional response to hypoxia, which has been linked to enhanced proliferation, resistance to therapy, and metastatic propagation of cancer cells. Overexpression of GLUT-1 has been shown to correlate with poor prognosis in several tumor entities, among them cancers of the uterine cervix.

Hypoxia inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) has been proposed as a candidate endogenous marker of tumor hypoxia and as a molecular mediator of hypoxia-driven malignant progression and acquired treatment resistance. In this study, HIF-1alpha expression in 68 biopsies of oxygenation measurement tracks from squamous cell carcinomas of the uterine cervix of 38 patients was assessed. Expression of HIF-1alpha was commonly found to increase as a function of distance from microvessels, at the center of tumor cell aggregations, and in the vicinity of necrotic areas.
