Variation between trainers in providing traditional gastrointestinal endoscopy training, in which residents learn endoscopy by doing under the supervision of endoscopy trainers, may cause differences in endoscopy competence between residents. In this study, we explored endoscopy trainers' views on the current status and desired future best practices regarding endoscopy training. This mixed-methods study comprised quantitative survey data collected from 158 endoscopy trainers working in 26 gastroenterology teaching hospitals in the Netherlands and semi-structured interviews with 15 gastroenterology residency (associate) program directors (PDs).

: A watch-and-wait strategy for patients with rectal cancer who achieve a clinical complete response after neoadjuvant (chemo) radiotherapy is a valuable alternative to rectal resection. In this pilot study, we explored the use of an electronic nose to predict response to neoadjuvant therapy by analyzing breath-derived volatile organic compounds. A man in his 60s presented to our emergency department with severe peripheral pitting oedema, weight gain, dyspnoea and diarrhoea. Blood tests showed a hypoalbuminaemia of 15 g/L. A suspicion of protein-losing enteropathy arose after the exclusion of albuminuria, cardiac failure, protein deficiency and liver cirrhosis.

A colonic lipoma is an uncommon lesion that is linked with clinical symptoms in only a small portion of patients. Patients with large lipomas are often referred for major surgery, which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In this case, we described a female patient with recurrent episodes of gastrointestinal blood loss, abdominal pain and colocolic intussusceptions due to a large, lumen-filling, obstructive lipoma in the splenic flexure.

As current follow-up modalities for colorectal carcinoma (CRC) have restricted sensitivity, novel diagnostic tools are needed. The presence of CRC changes the endogenous metabolism, resulting in the release of a specific volatile organic compounds (VOC) pattern that can be detected with an electronic nose or Aeonose.
